Crimes and Punishments (Sherlock Holmes) Update: A Little Macho Disguise & Some Arm Wrasslin’ Get Our Man A Clue…


 
Okay, Focus Home Interactive and Frogwares, you’ve got me now. I just HAVE to play Crimes & Punishments: Sherlock Holmes now just because of those goofy disguises the dashing detective can don in the game in order to help in his decidedly deducting ways. This trailer made me laugh for a few reasons, but not AT the game at all. I just like how the series has evolved from its stuffier Victorian era settings to a more modern (but not too modern) set of scenarios that looks as if it will have a wider appeal among a few types of more adventuresome gamers willing to take a chance on something new. Hmmm… I wonder if Holmes can deduct the cos of his disguises from his taxes? Or is that even allowed in foggy Londinium? Ah, the mystery… the mystery…

Crimes & Punishments: Sherlock Holmes is out on September 30, 2014 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC.

Bayonetta 2 Direct: Yeah, It’s A BUY, Nintendo, It’s a BUY!


 

BOOOM. Can’t talk. Watching. back in a bit. My Wii U is at home bouncing around the room. Go, PlatinumGames! This Nintendo exclusive has been making competing console owners green with envy and red with raaaaaaage for over a year, so here’s more fuel for those fires. The game looks INCREDIBLE and yeah, yeah, super casual touch screen mode aside, should be a MORe than worthy sequel to the original game. Now, will it sell Wii U consoles? That’s VERY hard to say at this point. However, given Nintendo’s coming games from now until 2015, I’d say we’ll see a lot more units moving during and past this holiday season.

Pathologic Reborn: Ice-Pick Lodge Remakes Its Flawed Classic As A Crowd-Funded Next-Gen Game


 

Pathologic BirdWhile it had its share of problems, 2005’s first-person adventure/role-playing hybrid Pathologic was one of those “creep under your skin” game experiences that made quite an impression. Sure the graphics weren’t exactly “state of the art” for the time, but the surreal nature of the art style, interesting map layouts and unique character designs helped carry developer Ice-Pick Lodge’s vision of a strange world in the grasp of a deadly plague. While the game didn’t do all that well outside its native Russia, enough of a loyal fan base picked it up over the years to gain it a cult following and of course, these days that means there HAS to be a remake or sequel. Thankfully, I-PL has decided to reboot their original game idea and expand greatly upon it to include content planned for the original that was scrapped as well as create all-new content that’s guaranteed to get the game a second life as a more richly rewarding experience… Continue reading

The Wire Returns, Sharp As Ever (But Sharper In HD. Maybe)…

I caught this news on a friend’s facebook post late last night and did a little hoot and short fist pump. While the official air dates have yet to be set by HBO, the company is finally rebroadcasting the entire groundbreaking series in high definition. What remains to be seen (pun intended, by the way) is HOW the episodes will look on that now standard format if they weren’t originally shot in that format. 4:3 was the standard back when the show originally aired back in 2001, although 16:9 HD televisions were creeping into the marketplace and very common by the time the show’s final episode aired seven years later. That said, poking around on a few message boards shows that either the show was shot in the wide format and cropped for the common man, the show was ONLY shot in 4:3 and we’re going to see less of what we should (boo) or we’re all just nuts and have fallen for a grand hoax. Damn you, internet! Anyway, if this does happen, GOOD. I can go and recommend this excellent series to a few friends who missed out on it and haven’t committed to buying that big DVD box set. If it doesn’t happen, hell, I’ll just hope HBO reruns the entire series on their On Demand channel like they did when I caught the series over the course of a few months thanks to them being smart enough to run a season a month.

Resident Evil HD & Resident Evil Revelations 2: Capcom Serves Up Two Dishes To The Ungrateful Masses…


 

Wow. If I was working in Capcom PR and had a thin skin (which, by the way is a LOUSY thing for anyone working in PR to have), I’d be chugging Pepto all day and taking an aspirin ever four hours for my heart. You’d think that the company was out running a steamroller over baskets of puppies or something if you read some of the many inane comments on YouTube and plenty of websites about both the HD remaster of the former GameCube-only Resident Evil remake from 2002 and the concept video for (as in too EARLY to have actual gameplay footage from) Resident Evil Revelations 2. I, for one will be getting both games upon their respective releases because I know that the former hasn’t been on any other console platform to date and it’s a truly great game. As for RER 2, I liked the first one quite a bit, so this one’s going to be added to the “watch and BUY!’ list.

It’s THAT simple for me. I’m not silly enough to yell and scream about unrelated games, DLC from unrelated games, and so forth and so on. These announcements are about the games in question and Capcom just wants to show them off and know what you think about them, not listen to bitch-fest central about Monster Hunter, Mega Man, Street Fighter or worse, INCORRECT comments about this HD version Resident Evil being the same as the 1996 original or just a straightforward “port” of the GameCube game.


 

Eh, I shouldn’t be surprised at all at this reaction, as the company seems to attract some of the more passionate but woefully ignorant fans in gaming. Sure, they’ve made mistakes over the years, but some people need to just grow up and not continue to slam them on EVERY call they make these days.

Lords of the Fallen “World” Trailer: Not Quite 100 Places To See Before You Die (In Them)…

My own hands-on time with a build of Lords of the Fallen reveals it’s a pretty damn hard game in the Dark Souls vein and developers CI Games and Deck 13 have cooked up a nasty little next-gen gem that’s going to test the best players to defeat some pretty crafty creatures. Like the Souls series, monsters lurk in both plain sight as well as in choice hidden spots, they’ll hunt you down once they spot you and are pretty relentless overall. Of course, you can use the environments to your advantage, knocking away some boards to create a death drop pit you can lure what was chasing you into or using magic for ranged attacks as a wee or over-sized beastie is closing in for the kill. And yes, blocking and dodging are skills you need to master, as these monsters aren’t playing at all.

The game is coming to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 28, 2014 and looks to be the first next-gen (or is it now current-gen?) chase & chop of the more cerebral kind. I only saw ONE person get close to defeating the demo Bandai Namco had on display and that guy was using every once of skill he had. Looks as if this one’s going to be one of those sleeper keepers for those who can play it. I predict a few broken controllers among those who may have missed out on FromSoftware’s series and have CI to blame (and their own lack of skills) for those formerly functioning chunks of plastic and components. be brave and fight onward, I say. You only have the fate of some fantasy world on your chosen customizable character’s shoulders…

The Walking Dead Season 5 Tease: Sixteen Seconds Of “Wait Until October…”

And here we go (again)… Yep, we’re all settled in with this show now, and it’s pretty much the two camp thing going on here. People either like the show because it’s expanded past the comics and changed things up a bit to a lot or they hate the show because it strays too far from the comics, the people have become scarier than the walkers (which makes sense at this stage in the game) and they just want an action movie every week with explosions and last-minute escapes or whatever. Being in the former camp is the smarter move here, as you can go in and just enjoy what the writers have cooked up and not worry about some seething fanboy or girl raaaaaaging on a keyboard somewhere from the comfort of a zombie-free zone. Funny how some of these folks dislike the show yet keep watching it anyway, huh? Yeah, it just sucks to be them, but hey – it’s their time to waste and it does help the ratings stay in a good spot, I guess…

Biohazard HD Remaster Offers Up A Great Reason To Import (For the PS3 At Least)

Biohazard HD RemasterSure, you can hold out for the download-only North American release of Resident Evil HD Remaster, but I’m seeing the more hardcore fans of the long-running franchise and a few gaming friends running for the Eastern border and snapping up pre-orders for the Japanese or Asian versions of Biohazard HD Remaster instead. Why? Well, for starters, the game comes on a physical disc with a manual and as you know (or should know), PS3 games are region free, so the game should run on any console anywhere in the world. Both the Japanese and less expensive Asian version (which is for Chinese gamers and should come with an English manual or instruction sheet fold-out common to that region’s software) will have dual-language support (English and Japanese voice and text based on the console settings), so jumping back into this classic experience will be a breeze for anyone.

From what I see, that much more expensive E-Capcom Complete Edition is sold out in a few import shops, so folks who want that pack for all the goodies it contains will need to hold out and see if Capcom plans to get that out over here. Anyway, go take a gander at some comparison screenshots so you can see what you’re in for. We won’t be seeing this remaster in the US until early 2015 at the earliest, but as the import ships out this November, I have the feeling that a bunch of people will be grooving on this game before that and posting their impressions left and right in the usual spots. Will I be one of those people? Hmmm… we shall see…

Metro Redux: Your “Shut Up And BUY IT” Game of the Week

For starters, calling either of the Metro games a mere “shooter” does both them and developer 4A Games a HUGE injustice. Metro Redux is one of those increasing rare birds, a solo-player focused game that doesn’t rely on crammed in multiplayer modes or a MP-only focus that leaves solo offline players high and dry and spending their money elsewhere for a great story with gameplay to match.  No, this isn’t some “dudebro” run ‘n gun adrenaline fest at ALL, but a bleak, cerebral, mostly methodically paced game where you need to keep a good eye on your ammo supply and whatever you can scrounge for in the demolished environments you’re trying to survive in. The setting is gloomy, but the game, looks absolutely spectacular on PC or console.

Granted, the games didn’t look “bad” on either the Xbox 360 (Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light) and PS3 (Metro: Last Light). But the increased power means the dev team greatly improved on the visuals and performance, making both games even more incredible experiences. Anyway, enough babbling from this end. Go out and grab this one and dive into that post-apocalyptic Soviet setting before it actually happens. Ha and ha? Hmmm… damn crazy real world we’re in is making these games less fun sometimes, grrrr…

New Oneechanbara Z2 Chaos Trailer: Aya and Company Are In Double (Plus) Trouble This Time Out…


 

While there’s still NO news of this game coming to North America, I’d be the first one signing a petition and/or bugging my contacts at D3Publisher of America to consider getting this silly sleeper localized. Even if they kept the Japanese voices and just subtitled the whole thing, I’d be happy. Speaking of localization work… Hey D3PoA! I’ll even do the proofreading job on the translated text if you need the assistance and pay me for my work. Yeah, I’m that nuts about Aya and the gang, so hit me up and let’s make this happen. Yeah, yeah, the game won’t sell a single PS4 in this country, but it’ll most likely do well enough worldwide to maybe get the girls a follow-up later on. I hope. Of course, the trick is getting the fickle gamers out there to fall for Tamsoft’s visual style and the simple yet complex gameplay the series offers. That’s going to take some marketing genius and perhaps even some money spent on showing the game off at some live events like a comic convention or other show where the public and press can step up and hop into things for a taste.

Eh, we’ll see what happens, I guess. One has to dream big with a game like this, folks. Oh and yeah, things get kind of… fruity at the end of that video. Ah, Japan. I love you, but MAN… you’re weird sometimes most ALL of the time!
