Humor (Sort Of): This is Your Internet As of Late…

(thanks, robatsea2009!)

Hoo Boy. I made the mistake of paying attention to some crap online that started as a dust devil and has swirled up into a Category 11 cyclone of poop and noisemakers. That’s part of what’s gotten me a bit annoyed this week, but I’ve decided to ignore this sort of thing in the future. Meanwhile, back at the ranch… I have work to do and will get back to getting to it. In the meantime, ladies and gents, if the world is running down, you make the best of what’s still around, I guess. Take it all with a grain of salt (and no more – the dire-beat-us, you know) and yeah, if it REALLY gets mucked up out there, just keep saying to yourself “It’s ONLY a movie, It’s ONLY a movie, It’s ONLY a movie…” On the other paw, sometimes The Cramps come in very handy for situations like this.

Back in a bit – I need to go soak my brain in some hot soapy water and maybe have a shot of something adult beverage-y. What a week…

Landline, HOOOOOOO!

Yaaaaaah. People ask me why I still keep a landline at home and today is one answer why. No service at a few spots I went to, VERY limited and slower than dial-up* wi-fi at other spots and me going NUTS trying to do a simple update post. Blech! Anyway, it’s near 7PM and I finally found a decent connection, so here’s A post. Not THE post I wanted to do, but that’s slow-biz, folks! Okay, back in a bit. I only have an hour before this place shuts down, but I won’t be staying for that full hour, as I have something cooking in the oven and I’d rather not burn the house down, a ha ha ha…

Hump Day? More Like “Hmph” Day…

So, the saga of sluggy-ass internet continues today. I woke up later than usual (it’s all Tales of Xillia’s fault!), mucked around the home for a bit (hey, my peppers are coming in and needed some care) and by the time I finally decided to get out and get some air and some work done, it was later than usual and the wi-fi here was still terrible. I’ve been trying to download Sword Art Online for the Vita since LAST WEEK and have been thwarted at every attempt. I’m gathering part of this is due to the Vita itself, as I can download PC games from Steam, Desura, GOG.com and other sites with no issues. Of course, PSN must be extra busy as well, but even still, I’d gotten many digital games from there and had almost no issues whatsoever. Damn gremlins! Anyway, short posting today, as I’m in the middle of a few movie reviews for the site and a few upcoming blogathons.

My inbox wants me to post MORE stuff, but given today’s signal strength (Low!) and the fact that that signal is dropping in and out, I think I’d rather not go nuts fighting with the internet any more than I need to. Looks like tomorrow will be a bright and early kinda day for playing catch up.

Back in a bit… maybe.

I Hate You (Again and Always), Internet…

Ugh. Here we go again with the “Change your passwords!” craziness. This internet stinks because it’s like someone swiping your house keys every few weeks (or more) and you needing to pay for new locks each and every time. Er, with the exception of one forgetting to take all the old keys off that huge keyring. Amusingly enough, I’ve changed my passwords so many times this year that I think I’m behind in sending myself coded hints as to what they are on some sites (yaaaaah!).

Anyway, I think we need to start hanging some of these annoying cyber crooks in the virtual public square just because it’s a pain in the ass to have to wake up to yet ANOTHER “Change your passwords!” panic that just shows how crappy “security” is online.pretty much everywhere you go using any device. And screw the vague “reporting” on this story. A billion people and 400,000 sites compromised? Well, no names and no sites listed means yup, madness (again). I despise changing passwords because I tend to use some slightly elaborate ones and it’s getting harder to think up ones I can remember easily. I don’t trust password generators or sites that save passwords in bulk because they’re ON the internet (duh) and no doubt targeted by these not so nice folks.

Feh. Off to change some passwords. This could (and will) take a while, grrrr. Stupid Internet.

My Idea of “Throwback Thursdays”? Getting Rid of Spam & The Spammers.

spam-family-of-productsBleh. For some reason, I’ve been getting a lot more spam replies than usual to posts, but I moderate everything and none have actually gone up. I don’t include spammy robots and stupid links to troublesome sites under “free speech” at all, so I delight in deleting and reporting such nonsense.

That said, I do wish there was a means of zapping it at the source because who needs it at the end of the day? I wonder is spammers get spam and what do they do when they get it? Probably read it for tips on how to be more effective, I guess. Or not. Eh, I’d put a buck into a fund to create a free zapper of some sort that rejects spam while sending the spammer a cute little note that tells them “Thanks for trying, pal!” or something like that. I could see that note also being somewhat customizable so people who REALLY hate spam and spammers could let them know just what they could do with that unwanted digital trash.

And hey, sorry Hormel Foods, but you’ll have to live with your processed stuff in a can forever being associated with something not so nice. Granted, I did have some SPAM Musubi once when I went to Hawaii many years back and it was quite tasty. But these days, I’m trying hard to stay breathing longer, so my diet has evolved a bit.

Hey, Internet? Get on Up, Already!

Amusingly enough, the dial-up connection I’m using now is FASTER than all the wi-fi spots I’ve visited today. At least for posting stuff, that is. I’ll still need to do a bunch of downloading tomorrow, so it’ll probably be a long day of updating, getting a new banner and background up and so forth and so on. You’d THINK being in a major metropolitan area would mean you have better service than some tiny hamlet out in the boonies, but nope. Anyway, this TV spot for the upcoming James Brown biopic (which I probably won’t like outside of the music) is keeping me slightly happier at the moment, as are a few games I’ve had queued up for this weekend. Eh, I guess I shouldn’t complain too much – at least I can work from almost anywhere provided the internet can keep up with me, grrrr…

Sunday Is A Slow Boat to the Bottom of the Internet Sea…

(thanks, Titanic821!)

Ah, the best laid plans of ice and men. Bleh. Between waking up a bit late and the HORRIBLE connection I have today at both Starbucks I’ve been to and my computer still acting a bit funky (well, it only made that tattling noise once for about a half second, but I’m still worried), I’m not getting what I need to get done DONE. Boo. The connection here keeps dropping, meaning my downloads aren’t completing properly or at all, a few drafts need some fixing thanks to losing the connection before an autosave and so forth and so on. Now I know why they play all that calming new age music here – so people frustrated with the crappy wi-fi don’t go berserk and start slamming their laptops and tablets to the floor. Meh, I’ll need to drag myself out of bed bright and early, I guess. My stupid virus scanner just stopped working after a reboot, which means I need to re-download and install it. Niiiiiice. Okay, that’s it – off to drown my sorrows in whatever ice cream like substance is in the freezer and maybe finish playing a game I need to review…

The Internet Hates Me Today, So I Shall Hate It Back. Kind Of…

Hmmm. for some reason, the connection today is TERRIBLE, dropping in and out randomly and frustrating me something awful. It’s actually faster at the Starbucks I’m at that at the library where I usually post from, but ever five minutes or so I lose the signal and important stuff I’m attempting (like downloading some Steam updates and other media) stops cold until the signal comes back. Worse, I could be home wrapping up some reviews (I hate playing PC games in public and I prefer playing Steam stuff offline so my playtime isn’t tracked), but nope, here I sit while the signal visits from time to time and anything I’m downloading resumes when it has the chance. This Tuesday sure feels like a Monday, but I guess that’s what I get because my Monday felt like a Friday. Bleh. Oh well, I’ll give it another 20 or 30 minutes then pack up and go home. Tomorrow is another (and hopefully better) day…

Let’s Try This Again… TEST POST!

Mask 8 (Small)OK, I’ll be out and about later at a more reliable connection, but since this new post window loaded fast this morning (yesterday was a TOTAL nightmare!), I’m going to try adding a post with an image and video (which was impossible to do on Tuesday for anything I attempted). Let’s see now… la, la, laaa… Whee, progress (he said, hitting himself in the head with a cast iron fry pan)! That really OLD photo above is there to scare you. Are you scared? No? Oh well, no refunds if you dropped a coin into that slot to read this. Video below, as it kind of fits the photo. Sort of. Okay, I like this song a lot, so you get to listen and watch and hopefully be very entertained even though it’s way out of season.

(thanks, NewGods101!)

Anyway, I’ll be back in a few hours with some actual posts. The rainy streets are calling me and I need to answer…

(NOTE: Although this is only a test, there will be NO quiz later. Consider yourselves lucky!)

503 Better Things To Do Than Be Caught Dead On Buzzfeed…

Soma Bringer_31_4645That image to the left is the inside of my head after a few minutes on that so-called “hot” site, Buzzfeed. I generally avoid places like that on the internet because I can feel my intelligence draining away as soon as I start poking around to find anything that actually keeps my attention long enough to finish, but I’m trying to be less stuffy in my online reading choices.

Granted, I barely have time to write all that I want to and read what some of you folks on my too short list of semi-regular spots to visit cook up. But on occasion, a friend here and there will shoot over a link to something on one of those much bigger mainstream sites that generate millions of hits (and millions of ad bucks I sure don’t get) and I’m finding myself poking around because I’m trying to be a nice guy more than wanting to waste five minutes or so reading silly polls and other junk that aren’t actually informative.

(Thanks, MRJadedtom!)

At best, you’re “entertained” with a few chuckles before you remember you had something actually important to do. At worst, you’ll be reading things you don’t care about and wanting to chase the person around who sent you that link with a sharpened or blunt stick wanting your time and brain cells back. I don’t claim to be the smartest guy on the planet these days, but if I’m going to dawdle anywhere, I’d prefer to waste my time when I want to as opposed to because someone else finds a shiny object to dangle in my field of view.
