Thanks to the fine folks over at Lionsgate Films, I’m going to help you in that adding fear to your entertainment life stuff with a slew of movie suggestions to get you and your fellow fright fans into the proper mood for a weekend packed with horror (that doesn’t involve relatives you don’t like or other actual threats to your existence). Well, personally not having been to Canada (yet), I guess I can’t agree about living OR dying there at all. Hell, I’d probably live LONGER there thanks to that better health care system up thataway, but on the other hand, I’d probably shuffle off this mortal coil faster thanks to a diet of poutine and too much smoked meat on assorted types of bread. Great, now I’m hungry and I don’t get to eat for about three more hours. Ah, well. Anyway, Tusk is coming to a theater near you on September 19. I know, I know… ANOTHER horror-related post! Hey, blame Kevin Smith for stretching his wings some more and making some better films, folks…

While I can live without the jokier stuff he’s famous for, I actually liked Red State quite a lot because it felt like the director was really stretching himself into new territory and the film worked exceptionally well as a result. Smith’s upcoming TUSK looks and sounds pretty darn intriguing, mixing its old school mad scientist played by the great Michael Parks with Justin Long’s modern hipster blogger looking for a the ultimate story who BECOMES said story:

Of course, given this summer’s lousy receipts from all those purported “blockbusters”, this one probably won’t be up there on the all-unimportant charts at all. On the other hand, I can see it becoming Smith’s biggest film to date provided people go in not expecting the usual and with open minds. If anything, this one’s going to be quite the conversation piece after it’s been seen, I’d bet…

Back on Track (Sort of)…

Status

Okay, I’m back from my self-imposed exile. Actually, I was working on a second and third Sunday post, but I got caught up in the gap between slow home internet and discovering something unusual in a game I was playing that I had to see through to the end to make sure it was a legitimate thing and not some oddball glitch that went nowhere. Anyway, off to catch up to my brain, which is already somewhere in Thursday plotting and planning away.

Dracula Untold Trailer: I’ve Got The Overbite Rewritten Blues…

Hmmm… suspicions confirmed. Dracula gets retold, so it’s officially “Dracula Untold” now, thus the need for a reboot of this magnitude. Big, loud, full of CG effects and hey, why not let’s get that hot singer du jour Lorde to do the theme song you’ll more than very likely hear as part of the end credits and want to download at some point? *Sigh*… Oh well. The young ones will eat it up, the weekly movie-goers will pay their money as usual, the older curmudgeonly critics will lament the lack of Lugosi’s accented mumbling sexy style, while others trumpet it as “sexier than Twilight” in those tween magazines and online haunts for the Emo chicky/Hot Topic crowd. Everyone wins… well, not really, but so goes the modern vampire movie – into the past with lots of the present 9and too much for my more mundane horror tastes). Eh, October isn’t so far away, so perhaps my mind will be changed? We shall see (as usual)…

Alien Trailer: 20th Century Fox Nails This Throwback Thursday Classic You Should Absolutely Own…

I have no idea how many times I’ve seen ALIEN since 1979, but it’s one of my favorite films, period. I’d written about it briefly but never in depth because there have been so many other and better dissections of Ridley Scott’s classic that the only thing I have to offer is SEE IT if you haven’t. The cool thing is it’s been released in so many formats that you can find it almost anywhere for whatever you have that plays legally purchased films. Of course, 20th Century Fox wants you to buy it from them HERE, so feel free to do that if you like. Personally, I’d want to grab the first four films in either the ALIEN Quadrilogy or ALIEN Anthology box sets, but if you just want to be scared out of your wits with the best entry in the franchise, go with the first one.

And yeah, I know it’s Friday, silly. I started this post last night but the internet was hating me at home because it vanished for about an hour or so and it was after midnight by the time it came back from wherever it went.

Dracula Untold Posters: Bats Just Nuts, I Say…

Hmmm. I guess I should wait and see what the trailers look like for this upcoming Universal Pictures/Legendary Pictures co-production, but I can’t help myself about whipping out a bat of my own and swinging at these poster designs. They look cool and all, but if you’re not the only one getting a serious Batman vibe from these two like I did, well keep looking and you’ll see the same things I’m seeing. Again, I won’t judge the film at all based on the posters, but at least it seems to be set during the “proper” time period and not some “Hey, let’s move the classic vampire into the modern age!” fail face that certain popular franchise TV shows and films have done over the years. Granted, for my money there hasn’t been a truly GREAT Dracula film in many years, so this one’s got a good deal to live up to. As long as it’s better than that reboot of The Wolfman from a few years back, it just might be a good time. as always, we shall see…

Alien Abduction: (So Far) This One’s Not For The Birds…

Hmmm. Usually, these modern sci-fi/horror flicks don’t phase me one bit because it’s all the same thing they try for and often fail at miserably on a few fronts. I do like what I see here so far from Alien Abduction, although I may be the only one who finds films about alien abductions pretty dull in general (sorry, Barney and Betty Hill!). That said, this is one to watch for me when it suddenly pops up on cable a few months from now. The sci-fi/horror genre certainly needs a good kick to the pants, so here’s to hoping this one delivers the goods and then some…
