A Day Early, A Dollar Short!

GYAAAAAH. So, we were supposed to have a big asbestos abatement TOMORROW here, but guess who showed up A DAY EARLY? Yup. Anyway, no big posts today because I’m stuck here with a big box tent in the living room, no access to the kitchen (but stuff has been moved out, so the fridge is safe) and no wi-fi at all. Bleh. There were no posts yesterday because I was moving furniture around and had a meeting in the afternoon followed by CES Unveiled in the evening (where I got my pants ruined at the end when someone dropped a hot Sterno can and I got splashed from about ten feet away. Oh well, it was to be expected with the month I’m having so far. But I saw some fun stuff and will write about it soon.

Ha. I wondered why I couldn’t sleep well, popped up at around 2am and started moving more stuff around in the living room. It’s a good thing, too. Okay, off to banging my head against a wall as my kitchen gets the big work done. If I can get out of here later this afternoon or early evening, I’ll post something else, as my inbox is PACKED. Okay, back to the land of destruction. I could use a more productive week, that’s for sure. Hmmmm… I sense a theme here in these last few posts.

Hikari Friday: Funko Wants You To Win A Movie Mutant!

I’d bet a bunch of you are either too young to remember This Island Earth or only know it from the humor hack job done on it in Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie. Anyway, this week’s Hikari Friday giveaway is none other than the sole monster from that 1955 classic, but presented here as Metaluna Mutant Hikari Figure! He’s not cute, but he’s #1 of only 1500 made and yes, he sure is colorful:

Film Review: EXTRATERRESTRIAL

Extraterrestrial3The Vicious Brothers’ (Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz) third film, EXTRATERRESTRIAL is a sci-fi/horror hybrid that takes its cues from plenty of genre films with interestingly mixed results. If you go in expecting something completely original, you may be mildly to moderately disappointed. On the other hand, it’s a fine example of the perfect mindless popcorn flick if you go in blind and let what’s here smack you around during its 106 minute running time.

Yes, it’s formulaic and yes, it’s maybe a few minutes too long thanks to some visual effects overindulgence, slow build-ups to stuff you know will happen and what I like to call a “jump & thump scare” sound mix where loud noises carry fright scenes more than the actors. Warts and all, you can clearly see the Brothers have scads of talent in what they do and how they do it – they just need a bit more polish in the polishing things up department… Continue reading

Do Your Eyes Need a Workout This Saturday Night? Well, Here You Go!

(Thanks, GoodOldDaysReturns!)

As for me? Well, I’ll have to pass on these sassy eyeball exercises, as Dungeon of the Endless and TRI: Friendship and Madness have both been giving them quite a wild time this week. That’s a good thing in terms of their overall scores, by the way. Anyway, I’m in the midst of some innnnnnteresting changes on the work front, but no reveals yet, people. I’ll let you know what’s what should what happen and if it somehow doesn’t happen, I’ll be all “Wha’ Happened?”:

(Thanks, MovieClips!)

Random Film of the Week(end): Adrenaline Drive

Adrenaline Drive DVD coverShinobu Yaguchi’s films always make me smile because they’re consistently fun to watch even if they don’t achieve everything they need to over the course of their running times. 1999’s romantic (and slightly black) comedy Adrenaline Drive does make the most of its hilarious plot and energetic cast although it takes a slight misstep later on with a very short burst of violence some viewers may find slightly sours the experience. On the other hand, given the character in question dishing out that brief bit of ouch time, it’s a sort of cathartic moment for him after all he’s been through… Continue reading

PlayStation Store’s Sale of the Dead Brings You Some Scary Good Bargains…

PSN Sale of the Dead Banner(shakes fist at monitor)… Stupid Sony. Having another PSN sale on some stuff I might want just when I’m poking around for something light and kind of fluffy to play between bigger games. Yeah, I got Dead Nation (finally) for under 4 bucks, but stopped there because I do have some things to take care of here outside the gaming sphere. Anyway, check out the long list of games, movies and TV shows (okay, mostly movies and TV shows, as the game presence is a bit limited this week) for some decent deals if you’re looking to stock up on content for one of your consoles or that Vita you’re not telling anyone you own for some oddball reason.

Or, hell… at least get Dead Nation if you own a Vita. It’s a ton of fun so far and I just may want someone around to hop online with in the not too distant future…

Gallery: Avengers 2, Assemble!

avengers_age_of_ultron_xxlg

Heh. So much for that trailer “leak”, huh? Thanks to movie poster site Imp Awards, we also JUST so happen to have not one, but two teaser posters (what, so SOON?), one of which gets broken up into EIGHT separate posters. Yeah, so much for suspense, huh? Eh, whatever. As I noted previously, this is how Marvel probably wants it from now on and it’s certainly NOT going to make people less likely to see Avengers 2: Age of Ultron or any other films Marvel whips out in the next few years.

Why Don’t You Play in Hell? Well, THAT’S the Question of the Day, Isn’t It?

jigoku_de_naze_warui_xxlg

(Thanks, Film Festivals & Indie Films!)

Well, for one, it’s HOT as you know what down there. Second, why bother when I can play in the hell that’s already up here. I choose not to because I like to sleep well at night. Wait, only The Bad Sleep Well… hmmmm. Anyway, this wild Japanese flick from director Sion Sono manages to reference Tarantino’s referencing of Asian cinema while also nodding and winking at assorted violent films from Man Bites Dog and even the wacky horror film Hausu. In other words, it’s a must see if you’re into this sort of thing.

(Thanks, TIFF!)

I happen to really like crazy films such as this, so I’ll have to take this one for a spin. Of course, for something SO outrageous, I’ll hold out for the Blu-Ray/DVD version just because I despise rowdy film crowds these days because they make every film an audience participation event even if it doesn’t need to be one. Blech. Anyway, I’m betting a dollar that U.S. distributor Drafthouse Films has a winner with this one. Hell, it has nowhere to go but UP at this point, given that catchy title it’s got…
