Release Calendar: 10/12 – 10/16/2009

Small but MIGHTY selection of games in stores this week. ROCK is the word of the week, folks. Brütal Legend totally rocks (and harder than many of you think – go play it and see for yourselves), Ju-on will rock you under the couch and Half-Minute Hero will rock your PSP ’til the battery blows up. Uncharted 2’s killer visuals and massive scale will rock your world and there are a hell of a lot of rocks all over Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition’s Wasteland landscape.

Akysys Games never, ever replied to my email request for a copy of Hero’s Saga: Laevatein Tactics, but I’m not going to throw a rock through their window (yet). I’ll have to make do with MagnaCarta 2 on the 360 with its rock-hard battles and Unreal 3-powered visuals or maybe enjoy Where the Wild Things Are, where I hear you jump over a lot of rocks. In Afrika, you’d best find a nice big rock to hide next to, lest you disturb that lion you’re trying to photograph.. that wouldn’t be a good thing at all!

Fairytale Fights Magazine Ad (Not For The Kids!)

Playlogic says it loud: “We’re M-rated and we’re proud!” with this hilariously bloody magazine ad for the upcoming hack ‘n slash/platformer hybrid. Pretty funny stuff if you ask me and yup, PROVES without a shadow of a doubt that this one’s NOT for the kiddies. AT. ALL. So, there.

Fairytale Fights ships on October 27, 2009. Yeah, go pre-order this one before the ban-happy crowd find out about it. It’s going to be a real doozy of ultra-violence, that’s for sure…

Gallery: Nostalgia

2009 is turning into a really super year for Nintendo DS RPGs and here’s yet another one to absolutely go and pre-order if you’re into the genre. Ignition Entertainment’s upcoming Tecmo/Red/Matrix co-production, Nostalgia is only a short few weeks away from its October 27 release date, so here’s a look at the latest game trailer plus a nice selection of screenshots to pore over – enjoy!

Half Minute Hero Website Pops Up A Hot Minute Before the Game…

Xseed Games is at it again, folks. They’ve got a lot of nerve, ONLY letting us in on the cool official Half-Minute Hero web site on such short notice before its October 13 release date! Hmph… it’s as if they think their newest game is supposed to be some sort of riff on classic RPGs with rapid-fire 30-second battles and oodles of ridiculously addictive fun in single and multiplayer modes or something AND with a killer metal soundtrack to boot. Geez… darn publishers and their half-baked ideas!

Of course, I’m kidding about hating on Xseed, kids – go get a copy of HMH the half-minute it comes out, or you’ll be sorry! Oh… and get a copy of Ju-on: The Grudge as well – it’ll scare your Wii right off of its stand and right under the couch (along with you and the family pet)!

Zombie Shooter 2 Is Complete – All Hail Sigma Team!

Are you a fan of insane isometric run ‘n gun action with a dash of RPG elements, a healthy weapons selection and HUNDREDS of enemies onscreen exploding in gobs of gory goo? Well, Sigma Team has been a “go-to” source for games that follow that exact pattern for a few years and their latest effort, Zombie Shooter 2 is 100% complete and ready to purchase and download right off their website. The game follows the same mold as their Alien Shooter series of games, but the undead factor is one that really sinks its teeth into you a bit more than gigantic bugs and mutated dino-beasts…

Dragon Age: Origins Double Update: Premium DLC On Day One!

Yowza – Yeah, yeah, I JUST ran a post on the game, but I just now checked my VPO email and this popped out at me. Man, this whole Dragon Age: Origins deal is getting pretty damn awesome by the day, huh? BioWare just plain rocks when it needs to (which is always in my book). Check out the official press release for the juicy, happy details… and go PRE-ORDER the game if you haven’t, grrrrr…

Dragon Age: Origins Update #6: Broodmother

In this week’s Dragon Age: Origins update, we take a look at one particularly nasty game bug (what?)… one that’s supposed to be in the game (calm down, now), and a BIG one at that (You may want to start screaming right about… now). Ewwww. I could say something silly like “Brood to the Mother” or worse (although that’s pretty damn terrible), but I’m only trying to lighten the mood a bit. Man, is that one ugly mass of monster. She looks like she ate Jabba the Hutt, his entourage and about half of the Death Star with a side dish of cold Cthulhu cutlets. Color me rattled. Thanks, BioWare. Get the Raid and hobnail boots ready, folks – here’s this week’s intro text and screenshots (and a nicely bloody trailer, which is HERE – not for the kiddies):

Broodmother

No one knows how the Darkspawn truly live in their tainted warrens beneath the earth, although a few Grey Wardens have, on occasion, delved deep into the old Dwarven tunnels in an effort to find the heart of the Darkspawn corruption and scour it clean. Those who ever returned, did so with ashen faces and spoke only of a creature called a “Broodmother” that haunted their dreams for the rest of their short existence. What the Broodmother truly is, only the Grey Wardens know for certain.

Dragon Age: Origins hits stores on November 3rd for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Back with another update soon!

Fairytale Fights Achievements/Trophies List Revealed

Here you go – most of the Achievements and Trophies in the PS3 and 360 versions of Playlogic’s upcoming beat ’em up/action/platform hybrid. I can see plenty of folks diving right into the blood sliding stuff, as it’s certainly a ton of fun (except when you go sailing off a cliff!) and from what I’ve played, nabbing loot and finding treasure chests can get addictive if you’re a completion hound that HAS to have everything. Bumping off 250 enemies with no weapons? That one should be a breeze, given the great combat system and how cool it is to use.

As for the rest? Well, read on, MacDuff…

Check out the bit of press release and two screen grabs below the jump. I’m going back to practicing my rolling off and under the couch move while I’m waiting for the game to ship…

Ju-on: The Grudge Set To Creep Into Stores Next Week

Time to get a little bit more frightened if you’re a Wii owner… Xseed Games has announced that Ju-on: The Grudge will ship on October 13, 2009. The feelplus-developed interactive “Haunted House Simulator” looks to scare up sales with its unique use of the Wii remote, genuinely scary moments aplenty and most importantly, creative input from Ju-on creator, Takashi Shimizu.

Don’t expect any big guns, fast-paced action or room sized bosses to do battle against here – the game is a pure test of nerves and what could be called a “true” survival horror experience, as your sole goal in each scenario is to make it to the end of the stage alive. Trust me, folks… it’s harder than you think, especially if you’re scared of the dark, objects moving just out of your vision, strange sounds emanating from your Wii Remote and pure, “jump-out” scares when you least expect it…

A tiny bit of the press release remains to let you know what you’re about to experience… two surviving game images merely hint at the horror to come…
