In case you missed it, Team Bondi’s instant classic is now available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 complete with all the DLC missions and costumes. While the Aussie developer has gone under due to a bit of controversy (go look it up, I need to get back to playing Skyrim), their first and only game is still an amazing achievement that’s well worth playing and an excellent example of a “thinking persons” video game. Personally, I say 2011’s Game of the Year category is going to be packed more than full of top shelf titles with more than ONE winner chosen by anyone serious about those sorts of lists. There have been far too many solid titles in 2011 to limit victors to a mere ONE per genre, I say…

Hostage Situation Update: Skyrim, Day, Um… I Forget
Status
Yeah, it’s THAT bad. When you find yourself going BACK to old completed dungeons to make SURE you’ve collected everything you can sell off in order to fund something crazy (well, I really DO need to buy that house. And there’s a cool pair of magic boots I’m too lazy to craft up)… you know you’re hooked. Ah well, thanks Bethsoft! Patch or not, you’re created a masterpiece for the ages.
Syndicate Co-op Gameplay Trailers: Classic Meets Current
Submitted for your approval, two pretty cool videos from EA’s upcoming reboot of the PC and console classic. Not only does veteran developer, Starbreeze get it, they get it RIGHT. Reworking some classic Syndicate maps into the new game’s 4-player co-op mode is a great thing indeed and should give the more open-minded loyalists something to think about. As much as I love the original game, it’s not 199X, folks… so it’s time to move on and enjoy what’s here, keeping in mind that the game has the blessing of members of the original’s development team. It’s all coming along really nicely and I can’t wait to see more gameplay videos as the game gets closer to completion.
Need For Speed: The Run Races Into Retail
DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine is running hot in this spectacular-looking new entry in the long-running franchise. The combination of lightning fast driving and out of the car quick-time action events give the game a truly cinematic flair and you get a digital version of Christina Hendricks to moon over if that’s your thing. EA, you’re going to make me BROKE with yet another cool, fun game this year, grrr…
Speaking of Sonic: A Fanzine Blast From The Past Returns (Sort Of)…
Amusingly enough, I was going through some old artwork and found this unused cover for my ancient fanzine, Continue? This was going to be published in the third issue sometime around January or February 1998 (which was actually the fourth issue, thanks to issue 2 1/2 – don’t ask) along with a chunk of Sega-related articles. The story behind the cover goes something like this: By 1998, Sega was in a bit of a pickle, as the Saturn had pretty much fallen off the map and the Dreamcast was a year away. Meanwhile, Sony’s PlayStation was ruling the roost and games like Parappa The Rapper were rewriting the book on originality in game design and a few other innovations.
I imagined poor Sonic and Tails unemployed (well, between consoles) and out on the street one day as a familiar (and flatter) figure strolled by. No, I wasn’t a Sega-hater at that time, folks. I was just taking a look at the company’s missteps and hiccups in the mid to late 90’s that put Sonic on the street for a bit. I also planned to run copies of all the correspondence I’d gotten from Sega’s wonderfully cool customer service team from the early to mid 90’s (back when you could write a letter and get some neat stuff back in the post), so it wasn’t going to be a complete poke in the eye issue.
Of course, Parappa is long gone and Sonic is back on top (or close to it) these days. I just haven’t even thought of reworking this piece to reflect that. Perhaps one day… but I’ll have to make sure the rapping paper dog and pals aren’t popping back up on the Vita or whatever anytime soon first…
Review: Sonic Generations
Platform: Xbox 360 (also on PS3, Wii)
Developer: Sonic Team
Publisher: Sega
# of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Score: A
The Sonic Team (and Sonic) renaissance continues with another solid and hugely fun to play Sonic the Hedgehog game. While not flawless, Sonic Generations does a mostly stellar job of recapturing the nostalgia of the blue hedgehog’s early days while also giving gamers a Shake ‘n Bake of pretty much every major Sonic game (and a few minor ones) that’s come along since. Those well-versed in Sonic lore will be grinning ear to ear at the presentation, looking for references all over the place as they play through the game. Like the classic games it cobbles its levels and characters from, the overall experience is somewhat brief. However, just like the old days, this is one game you’ll blow through once and go back to over and over until you’ve aced every challenge and scored “S” ranks across every single map. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Hands-On: There Will Be Blood. And Running. And Gunning. All At The Same Time.
As much as I love all sorts of games I’ll admit to being a tiny bit skeptical every so often about Capcom announcing yet another Resident Evil title. Sure, the franchise is hugely popular with a whopping 45 million units sold across multiple platforms… but it’s far from perfect. There are certain gameplay elements that have been with the series from day one that, while fresh and fun a few years back, are a bit decayed when compared to some of today’s titles. Granted, keeping things set in stone doesn’t just plague Capcom’s zombie-packed games alone. I could go on for a few paragraphs about other storied franchises setting into too familiar territory, but let’s talk about the game that’s going to save Resident Evil from itself while surprising the hell out of the most skeptical die-hard fans in the process. Thanks to developer Slant Six Games, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is coming and in my opinion, as both an offline and online experience, it’s absolutely the best thing to happen to the franchise in years. Gallery: Of Orcs & Men: One Unique RPG To Keep An Eye On…

Sure, Skyrim is ruling them all as one of the best (if not THE best) game of 2011, but the RPG genre is definitely surging forward into 2012 with a number of cool new titles. One of the many games I’m highly interested in seeing and playing is Of Orcs & Men, Focus Home Interactive’s upcoming PC/PS3 and Xbox 360 title co-developed by Cyanide Studio and Spiders. What’s intriguing about the game for me is the idea of playing through a lengthy quest as a pair of characters usually found in your average RPG at the end of some heroic square-jawed human’s blade. The leads here are an orc warrior and a goblin assassin who team up in order to kill the human ruler who’s responsible for man’s ongoing war with their races. This change of pace from the usual RPG formula looks to make for an interesting blend of gameplay styles as players will be able to use both characters and their different skills throughout the adventure. The E3 teaser shows off some nicely stylized characters, beautiful lighting and what’s looking to be a pretty huge, detailed game world so far…
The game is set to be released in Spring 2012, and yes, I’m keeping this one on my radar (and you should as well). Screens and other fun stuff below the jump… Continue reading
Nintendo Gives Gamers A ‘Real’ Super Mario 3D Land In NYC (Along With A Bit Of Gametime, Too)
Nintendo of America, as always, REALLY knows how to throw a party. Turn a tiny bit of Times Square into a virtual Mario Land set, invite a ton of kids and see what happens? Good times for all, no problem! All this super fun stuff was for a pre-launch Super Mario 3D Land party where gamers got to play the upcoming 3DS exclusive before its 11/13/11 street date. The weather was definitely perfect for the event and it looks as if everyone had a total blast. It looks as if there’s yet another great reason to be a 3DS owner this year and with the holiday season rolling up fast, you’ll want to absolutely add this latest Mario game to your gift list.
Jeff Spega’s Tron and Robotron Now Available. You Should Buy It Based On The Table Of Contents Alone.
Jeff is a cool guy (creatively cranky like me), a fellow gamer, writer, editor and knows a hell of a lot more than I do about video games. Even better, he was smart enough to write all he knows down in a handy new book called Tron and Robotron: Thirty Years of Electronic Gaming (and Counting), which just so happens to be available for purchase by clicking on that link above. I need to buy a copy just so I can read more than the excellent teasers and excerpts he’s got as a quickie download on his page. Oh, and that table of contents is pretty spectacular. Seriously. Jeff also likes a lot of 3DO games I like, so he’s definitely someone to have around when you happen to have a copy of Burning Soldier and an extra controller lying around and need someone to blast Kaisertians with.
