One of the more “controversial” game announcements of this year was 2K Games’ currently in progress reworking of the classic PC turn-based strategy franchise as a high action first-person shooting game light on the tactical elements longtime fans expect from the series. From the striking “retro” visual style to the alien designs to the gameplay, plenty of X-Com: UFO Defense die-hards have been burning up message boards with hissy-fit griping about every aspect of the new game’s design before even getting some hands-on time with a demo.

Warren Spector’s Disney Epic Mickey Headed to Wii in 2010
Deus Ex creator Warren Spector’s Junction Point Studios has been working on a top secret game project for Disney Interactive Studios for a while now and it’s been on my radar for as long as JP has been working away quietly on it. Now, the first official huge chunk of information and assets have now become available. Here you go: the complete press release and a nice set of images including a dev team photo, character renders and a few pieces of concept art.
Arc Rise Fantasia Headed to Wii From Ignition & Marvelous in 2010

Looks as if the Wii is getting another exclusive RPG and a mighty fine-looking one at that. Ignition Entertainment and Marvelous are bringing imageepoch’s epic Arc Rise Fantasia to the US next year. Here’s a quick look at some mostly character-centric screens (and yes, we’d like more, please!):

2009 is turning into a really super year for Nintendo DS RPGs and here’s yet another one to absolutely go and pre-order if you’re into the genre. Ignition Entertainment’s upcoming Tecmo/Red/Matrix co-production, Nostalgia is only a short few weeks away from its October 27 release date, so here’s a look at the latest game trailer plus a nice selection of screenshots to pore over – enjoy!

I thought this one sounded familiar… Montreal-based developer Wicked Studios’ DS exclusive Tactical RPG was initially announced for a June 2009 release, so I thought I missed out on it entirely. However, It turns out Majesco is actually publishing it on December 1, 2009, so here you go: the first game trailer and a nice batch of screenshots – enjoy!
I’m really liking the character customization aspects as well as the nice character art, which looks a little inspired a bit by the great Susumu Matsushita’s work. Hmmm… I feel another developer interview coming on. It looks as if I’m off to bug some PR folks…
F1 2009 Wii Trailer
Nice bit of a tease for Condemasters’ upcoming F1 2009 showing of the new Singapore Course. Color me impressed at that frame rate and number of cars on the track. Fingers crossed that it’s got true simulation as well as arcade aspects so everyone can dive in and play.
More on this one as new info arrives – stay tuned…
Gallery: Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble
In case you didn’t know it yet, Atlus really wants all your money… and they know how to get it while making your gamer grin grow wider in the process. This year has been especially prime for the publisher, thanks to everything from the wacky fun of 101-in-1 Explosive Megamix to the upgraded classic RPG Shin Megami Tensei: Persona to the upcoming instant classic for the ages masterpiece Demon’s Souls (which is so spectacular, it’s worth buying a PS3 for).
Another cool-looking game headed your way (on November 10, 2009, to be more precise, so go pre-order the game!) is Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble for the PSP, a portable beat ’em up that should remind a few of you classic gamers out there of the good old days of River City Ransom and other non-stop knuckle-fest titles. I have a couple of these sort of high school beatdown games in my Super Famicom collection, but I’m too buried under new games and such to go dig them out. Anyway, seeing these screenshots made me laugh, but for all the right reasons – this one looks like it’s going to be hilarious. Take a look for yourself…
Preview: Dead Space Extraction – Bringing Cinematic Sci-Fi/Horror to the Wii
Visceral Games in on a two-part mission with its upcoming Dead Space Extraction and it’s an important one. The first part is done: they’ve gone and created a great-looking, dynamically frightening console game designed to scare you right under the couch (while also laying the groundwork for future Dead Space titles). The second part is a bit tricky, meaning it’s all up to YOU to assist by buying the game and experiencing all that hard work put into the project for yourself.
I had the great opportunity to sit in on a live (and informative) Q & A session with a few members of the dev team, who all spoke passionately about the game while dropping a few interesting facts about developing it as a Wii exclusive.
