KRONOS: 1957’s Alien Planet Eater Makes For An Interesting Muse…

KRONOS WT

(thanks, ScienceFictionFLIX!)

KRONOS posterAnother favorite sci-fi flick from my younger days (OK, it still holds up today on a few fronts), Kurt Neumann’s 1957 film KRONOS is a really well-made and fun cheapie that benefits from some prescient scripting, pretty decent effects work (some nice for the era animation of the titular massive alien energy accumulator in a few quick shots), a snappy running time and a few unintentional chuckles from the usual overacting cast members emoting with relish about the over-sized and unstoppable alien threat of the week. Anyway, back in 2011 I was dinking around in MS Paint and had a sudden flash of inspiration to do a goofy tribute image and here you go. I guess it’s technically a piece of “fan art” although I have to chuckle at the “fan” part as it’s not exactly something I do on a regular basis. Yeah, I guess this gets added to the Random Film of the Week pile at some point. Feel free to check it out, as yep – it comes highly recommended.

Random Art: While You’re Waiting For Updates… A Few Pics From Hell!

everybody knows your name

always openOK, I do need to catch upon a TON of stuff I’ve missed out on over the past few weeks, but I may as well drop in another random piece or three from the gallery for fun. These are from a “series” of fake vacation photos from a trip to hell, which looks just like here, but with more heat and different neon signs. I can’t say if it’s any more miserable a place than the “real” world, as both have good and bad points.

For one thing, despite what some tavern signs say (hey, lies are everywhere down there!)… they don’t serve beer in hell, but the food is always hot and cheap. Yes, that includes the ice cream, which is weird… but tasty and somehow holds that familiar shape when it’s scooped and put on a hot off the stack waffle cone. Yum-o(uch)!

they don't serve beer in hellOh, I just KNOW you’re curious now. Don’t worry, though… you’ll find out soon enough. I went and got you a free ticket while I was there. The place is ALWAYS open and yep, they just love visitors. Don’t forget to visit the gift shop on the way back up. Everything is free and they’ll even gift wrap as much as you can carry. Just avoid the Sisyphus Rock replica, as it’s actual size, but to a mortal, only feels as heavy as an average-sized grapefruit in the underworld. However, it turns into a REAL 500-plus pound boulder when it leaves the basement level. if you can roll it home afterwards, it DOES make a great gag gift for a friend or enemy…

Thing(s) to Do When it’s Too Damn Hot to Think Straight…

untitled

OK, I actually did this artwork yesterday evening to clear out some cobwebs upstairs, but it’s been SO hot today that even the air is too tired to move much. Then again… oh, look – it’s 101 degrees rolling by on its brand spanking new motorcycle. Lucky skunk! Go crash into a tree, weather. Well, not this tree… it’s not real. OK, that post took too much effort to write, but it needed to be done. Off to poke around my inbox a bit – it seems to be bursting at the seams today…

Random Art: Yeah, Just Like Me…

old not evil Whee, more MS Paint madness! “Old, Not Evil” is the title, by the way. And yep, I never know what to call a sketch at all until it’s “finished” and even then, it’s a tossup at best. Er, that’s all I have to say about that, I guess. More to come when I have time to draw. Yeah, it’ll probably be something tree-ish. They’re easy for me to do (well, sometimes)… Back in a bit.

Random Art: For Freaks’ Sake, This One’s for The Birds…

broken wingAs much of a horror classic as Tod Browning’s 1932 film Freaks is, that bizarre ending has always rankled me a teeny-tiny bit. Spoiler: that bird lady thing at the end was actually more amusing than shocking to me, especially when stacked up to the real life cast and their assorted actual conditions. Anyway, completely on a lark (ha ha) I did this MS Paint sketch last year as an alternate makeup just for fun. Yeah, yeah, this film will (thankfully) NEVER be remade, but if someone want so try it (and thus be stalked by a few people armed with assorted home-made portable torture devices), here you go. Have fun for as long as it lasts, but sleep with one eye open. I actually overheard a conversation about a “remake” idea in a Starbucks a few months back, but it was a bunch of hipster types hoping someone would take advantage of the fact that reality show is now using “freaks” as a happy entertainment option for us “normals” out in tee vee land. Let’s hope this doesn’t take off, I say…

On a side note, I and many other fans keep hoping against hope that someone tracks down the 26 or so minutes of footage that was chopped out by MGM back in 1932 and restores the film to its original glory.

Random Art Time: Live & Learn…

live and learn

Meh – I guess the best thing about having a crap internet connection is you find things to do while waiting for things to iron themselves out. This dinking around with primitive programs sure beats playing solitaire, Ive heard. And so, whee! One more quickie MS paint sketch for the deviantArt page, I suppose. Enjoy! Should I mention that I sometimes sell actual art work (well, small tree sketches) over at fiverr.com (search for AlwaysTreeTime) or is that too much intentional shilling in an overtly capitalist manner? Hey, at least I’m not sticking a PayPal button on the site or posting creative shoe fetish pics to rake in some extra dough. Granted, my feet could more than likely stop a truck, but now how you’d think. More art later… maybe (well, hopefully done when I’m not waiting around for an hour or two)…
