And Today’s Moral Is…

Just because Bin Laden is kaput* doesn’t mean THIS game SUDDENLY gets any better with age. Still, I bet it rises in value a bit on eBay from those sellers that have actually played it and know what it is (that mix of crude capitalism and cathartic revenge fantasies always seems to find its niche, huh?)…

*(Amusingly enough, I was looking for an empty poster tube and found a target poster with his mug on it sent out by Encore to promote the game. I’d give it away, but like the game, it’s something that’s quite a bizarre part of my collection. I’ll send a scan of a photo to anyone who wants one…)

Update: Xseed Still Loves You, Wizardry Fans – You Just Need To Get With The Program…

Well, it looks as if Wizardry fans in the US hoping to see the upcoming Labyrinth of Lost Souls as a retail release will have to go all in on the digital version instead. I poked a note Xseed's way a few days ago and got back this reply:

Hi Greg,

Good to hear from you, and please excuse the late reply as things have been pretty busy with the launch of TiTS.*

Didn't see this article of yours before our Wizardry announcement, how funny. Unfortunately, we have no plans to release it on disc right now so no use holding a survey just yet, but perhaps we can consider something similar to Japan where the first one did so well as a digital game that they released it and its sequel together on one retail package later (of course that means sales here will have to be above expectations too for us to consider this).

Thanks for posting the news, glad you liked our announcement.

*Er, for the record… TiTS refers to The Legend of Heroes: Trails in The Sky, the new PSP role-playing epic just launched a few days ago. That acronym is banned on GameFaqs, as i amusingly found out while updating a post there with this news. My evolving thoughts over this (which may be helpful to the resolute die-hards grumbling away about a download-only release) can be distilled HERE. Read more »

Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls Set to Hit PSN This Spring (Huzzah!, But It’s Time To Start A Retail Release Petition, I Say!)

Well alrighty, then! I guess my little commentary from a few months back made the rounds at Xseed's offices or something, as the news that the publisher is in the process of localizing Acquire's PSN role-playing game for a US release over the PlayStation Network. While that Spring 2011 download-only release is in the works, I'm hoping that Xseed just does the right thing and gives us BOTH games on a disc as Wizardry Double pack (the same way they were released in Japan after their PSN debuts).

Is it nicely-written and well thought out online petition time? We shall see… in the meantime, I'm a damn happy camper with his fingers crossed. Press release below the jump – more screens, too!Read more »

Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga Soundtrack BonusTrailer

Here’s a peek at the latest trailer for Atlus’ upcoming RPG Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga featuring some of that excellent music, which by the way, is going to be on the bonus CD included with the game (thanks Atlus!). There’s a demo hitting Xbox LIVE on March 22, and the full game will be available in stores on April 12, 2011. I’m certainly looking forward to seeing the changes and sinking way too much time into this expanded version of the original.

Sega Knows How To Throw A Par-Tay…

Yakuza 4 hits stores on March 15, 2011 exclusively for the PS3 and Sega held a little bash for the game in downtown NYC last night. The game is indeed ridiculously DEEP and nicely done from what I got to play. I think I ate more sushi than I’ve had in my entire life, but probably not…

Anyway, a review will go up once my copy of the game arrives and I get a good chunk of time into it.

Killzone 3 "Dear PlayStation" TV Spots

Awesome and hilarious stuff – the game is in stores next week, so go grab it. The SharpShooter Move peripheral rocks, by the way (Go get one and a Move controller set if you don’t have one yet)

Review: Trinity: Souls of Zill O’ll

Platform: PlayStation 3

Developer: Omega Force

Publisher: Tecmo Koei

# of Players: 1

ESRB Rating: T (Teen)

Official Site

Score: B+

If you’re a big fan of hack & slash action RPGs and happen to own a PlayStation 3, Trinity: Souls of Zill O’ll is going to be right up your alley. Omega Force’s latest is a solid dungeon hack with a few splashes of familiar genre influences (both Eastern and Western) from Diablo to Demon’s Souls. If that puts a grin on your face, you’re all set for many hours of quality monster slaying, loot grabbing and quests galore. The game’s non-linear structure allows for enough freedom that the main plot of a half-elf’s revenge against the evil overlord that killed his family almost takes second place to the sheer amount of rescue/escort missions, fetch quests, arena challenges and other RPG staples. I say almost because while the story does pick up as the game goes on, the simple, yet challenging gameplay is the star when it needs to be. While it isn’t perfect, Omega Force deserves a ton of credit for making such a fun to play experience that’s guaranteed to steal many hours from those players that fall under its spell.
