Interview: Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga Q & A

Well, it took a little while, but given that Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga is shipping next week, the timing is actually perfect. I initially thought this would be a simple Q & A session with an Xseed employee or two, but thanks to Xseed’s Jimmy (“New Daddy!“) Soga and busy-bee PR guy extreme Scott Fry, the Q’s got sent out to Japan where I’ve the pleasure of noting that they were answered by Kiyoji Tomita, Section Chief at KUROGANE (the Osaka-based team assisting K2 with the development and localization process). How’s that for service?

Anyway, here we go – enjoy!

Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga Gets Ship Date, Web Site

It’s allllllllllmost here, department: Xseed Games’ next Wii exclusive, Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga is set to hit stores across North America on September 29, 2009. The K2/Marvelous Entertainment-developed Action/RPG also has an official website up now with loads of great game info, screens, wallpapers and some really nice music from the game playing in the background. In case you haven’t been following the game to date, here’s a quick rundown of what to expect in an easy to digest press release format.

And in case you’re asking, yep, I’m still holding my breath for those VKES interview questions I sent off a while ago. I know that there’s been a LOT going on over at Xseed (including at least one new Xseed baby – Congratulations, Jimmy!), but I’m a supremely patient sort these days…

DAF Q & A Updates!

Since I’ve gotten a few e-mails about the Q & A’s I’ve set up, here’s a follow-up or two to fill you in:

1. I’m still waiting for the fine (and very busy) folks at Xseed to get those Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga Q’s I sent off a while ago back this way. But remember, folks: Xseed is comprised of a really small team with multiple projects going simultaneously for the Wii and other platforms.

2. I have an interview coming back this way soon with a few team members at Big Blue Bubble, the folks working on Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, a great looking first-person RPG for the Nintendo DS set to be published by Aspyr. It would have been back sooner, but another site or magazine with more clout bumped my former “exclusive” so they could get their scoop first. And so it goes in this industry…. ah well.

I’m also working on a few other potential interview subjects for the near future – stay tuned…

Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga Update #3

OK, folks – yes, there’s been a bit of confusion about the whole character customization deal in the game, but that’s what happens when you’re dealing with multiple builds of a game. I got an email this morning from Xseed’s Product Manager Jimmy Soga that should definitively answer your questions regarding this. Hey, if I’m wrong about something, I’m not gonna hide under a rock, folks!

“For VKES, yes I do have to apologize for the character’s sex/race customization. Apparently the setting I mentioned was the earlier build and the new one has been changed.

So here we go… Continue reading

Update: Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga Online Co-op Mode Details

Ask and it shall be answered department: As I forgot to bring my tape recorder to the Xseed event, I sent off a quick query to the company’s Product Manager, Jimmy Soga regarding the online co-op gameplay featured in the upcoming RPG Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga. Here’s what he said:

“Below is some information regarding the Co-op play for VKES. Basically it is similar to the PSP ad-hoc co-op. You will be able to tackle any quest together and any items you find in co-op you will be able to bring back to your single player game.

NETWORK GAMING (Co-op)
For this mode, the player must have access to a network connection. Enter a friend code to register a friend. With no friends registered, the Wi-Fi game mode cannot be played. Select a friend to go on an adventure with (limit 1 friend per adventure).

Once on the field, the game plays similarly to the single player mode. Cooperate with your friend to complete the quest. When either the player or friend is defeated in battle, the fallen character must wait for the other to come and revive them. The players may only be defeated three times before the quest automatically fails.

If either party decides to retire, the quest will stop and will be considered called off.

Communicate
To communicate with a friend while on the field, hold down on the B Button and press left or right on the +Control Pad. Pressing left will active the Emote Mode where various icons can be selected and pressing right will activate the Gesture Mode where various actions can be selected. Either mode is useful in communicating one’s situation or feelings.”

Based on the description above, it looks like the game is going for a simplified Phantasy Star Online approach to things, although the online limit of two players per session might disappoint those expecting more of a MMO-style community experience. As you’re not able to use mercs in co-op mode (this keeps the frame rate stable, folks), this should certainly make for a more challenging game, particularly when dealing with the ridiculously huge bosses or more densely enemy-populated maps.

As more and more info arrives, Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga is absolutely becoming one of those Wii titles I’m really looking forward to experiencing more of and I’m sure hardcore fans of the franchise will also be all over this new entry once it hits retail later this year.
