Another Wonderbook? OK, Let’s See, Er… Read What’s Coming…

Well, it certainly looks as if Sony made some money with that J.K. Rowling Wonderbook after all, as now there’s another coming (at least in the UK). Wonderbook: Diggs Nightcrawler is on the way in May there, but I still think Sony needs to whip up one or more of these things for more mature readers. Sure, it’ll be a novelty game/book at best, but they’d make a mint from those 50 Shades fanatics (and hell, a book is always better than a movie, right? OK, usually), and I can even see some sort of sci-fi or fantasy books geared towards cranky older gamers (like me) doing well if the integration between reading and play is done right…

Wonderbook: Book of Spells Zaps Into Retail – Does J.K. Rowling Still Have The Magic?

Hmmmm… this will be an interesting experiment for Sony, as the company is taking a big chance with a somewhat costly game experience and an audience that may not be willing to buy into it. On the other hand, Rowling’s fan base is massive enough to support the product and keep her and SCEA happy if it does well. Personally, I don’t see this selling out all over the place because new users will need to shell out for a PS3 and Move setup BEFORE buying that Wonderbook. As for the future, I’d say Sony absolutely needs to think about some sort of book/figure combo with an action or sci-fi theme in order to make the Wonderbook tech worth the money spent on cooking it up.

Imagine an Uncharted game using the Wonderbook and some relic replicas, a Star Wars game in the vein of Skylanders or some other popular franchise (think comic books and the possibilities are pretty striking) where people will want to automatically open their wallets and jump in without hesitation? That particular future is bright indeed…. but this first entry needs to sell very well in order for that to even happen…

Hey Sony! You’re Missing a HUGE Opportunity With Wonderbook…

Here’s the second developer diary from SCEE about Wonderbook, but let’s forget about that for a minute. Four little words, Sony, just four little words:

Fifty Shades of Grey.

Grab the rights to this NOW. I’m just saying… that stupid book and its two sequels have sold in the millions and you have an untapped (pun not intended) source of potential female PS3 owners (that thinner cuter model you just introduced, y’know) who’d LOVE to have an interactive version of the book they can surprise their significant (or insignificant) others (or other selves) with. Sure, the kid books will do OK, but get a dev team to whip out (no pun intended) a version of the first book with some nice PS Move bells and whistles, get it in a limited edition package with a coupon from Trojan Vibrations and BOOM – watch the money rollllllllllllll in.

I’m just saying – tap that market fast before the movie hits and the fad wears out. No charge for this idea – you can thank me later.

Killzone Trilogy Trailer: Guerrilla Finally Brings It All Together (Almost…)

Even though I own all three originals, like a lot of gamers, I’ll be shelling out for Killzone Trilogy for one reason: the chance to replay the first Killzone game in HD (thank you Sony!). That said, where’s Killzone Liberation? That excellent (and under appreciated) PSP exclusive was quite a solid chunk of side story action that, despite the third-person viewpoint and bird’s eye view camera angle, still looked and felt like it belonged in the canon (which it does). I’d have added it as a free PSN download if there were somehow no way to fit it on a disc, but we’ll see if Sony decides to give the game a proper fit somewhere as part of this great collection set to land on October 23 (October 24 in Europe).  Between this and the massive God of War Saga, Sony is certainly making sure its main franchises remain in the minds (and libraries) of gamers who can’t get enough of them…

LittleBigPlanet Karting? Shark Tank Sinker Or Key Speed Demon Deluxe?

Commence the unstoppable automotive puns: It’s a running joke around here that when a franchise does a kart racer, it’s either doomed, running out of steam or jumping the shark somewhat hard creatively. However, given that it’s a LittleBigPlanet spin-off (or spin-out if things go badly for the game), this one might be worth taking for a ride. Of course, Sony already has an excellent kart racer in the ModNation Racers series, but let’s see how LBP turns out before passing any judgement. If what’s under the hood is fast and fun, this one will be firing on all cylinders in play stacks for quite some time. Of course, some creative wags will no doubt create a bunch of Mario Kart clone tracks, which should be really funny because you KNOW someone at Nintendo will be playing them once they’re posted on PSN…

PlayStation Vita Gets Simultaneous 2012 NA/EU/LA Launch Date

February 22, 2012 is the big day Sony fans here in the US (as well as in Canada, Europe and Latin America) have been waiting for. No news on a launch lineup just yet, but the full press release (which mentions a few titles in the works) is below the jump, system specs and all. Color me thrilled. The Japanese Vita launches on December 17, 2011 and from what I’ve been reading, interest seems fairly high amongst some (including those who will import the region-free hand held a few months early at a premium).

Of course, it’s really less about what we as critics have to say about the Vita than all about enough people having enough money to afford a new handheld and games for it in this very shaky economy for too many out there. I’ll have to figure out which body part to sell of that I’m not using much, but I may not have to go that route after all if I can get my finances where they need to be… Continue reading

Sony @GamesCom 2011 (Parts 1 & 2)

Yes, I know PAX is right around the corner (I’m not there this year) and I’m STILL writing stuff about Gamescom? Hey, I’m buried in Deus Ex: HR at the moment, so you get to watch a couple of really nice videos from Sony’s press conference last week until I post my review and free up some time. By the way, so far, it’s a spectacular game…

PSP E-1000 Specs: Cheaper, But Still A Hot Ticket For Some…

While the uber-techies are grumping over this new model's lack of certain features, personally, I think the E-1000 is a pretty great entry level handheld for new users looking to get into the PSP and its rather huge games library. I still have my original 1000, 1001 and Slim 3000 models here at the home office, so I'm not sure I'll import this one yet.

Import as in there's been no North American release announced, which in my opinion, is a bit strange. Is SCEA afraid that the system will be blasted on message boards for being “cheap” and lacking features found on past and current models or are they implying (or is it inferring) that European gamers aren't all that sophisticated and this budget model will find a niche amongst those who don't have high-speed connections and want to get some handheld gaming in. I can see a modestly to moderately successful market for the E-1000 here provided it's packed in with a few PSP Greatest Hits (or a compilation UMD with assorted PSN titles and minis), but we'll see what SCEA decides down the road.

Specs below the jump, by the way…Read more »

Some Quick Thoughts on "Transfarring"

OK, so we all know Hideo Kojima is a genius. My question is: why the heck didn’t Sony think of this idea when the PSP was initially launched? As soon as I heard they were doing a portable unit, one of my top wishlist items was the ability to either link PS2/PS3 content to the unit for on the go action or have new games where portable versions had data that could be transferred back and forth between consoles. Anyway, now that “Transfarring” is not only a reality, but a new “word” gamers worldwide will be speaking whenever they hit the road with a Sony handheld, let’s hope it’s adopted by as many developers as possible as soon as possible.

Oh, and ANY sort of data transfer system NEEDS to be offline enabled as well just in case the PSN hacks never stop rolling out on a regular basis. Just a thought…
