Misty Non-Mountain Brain Hopping (Winter Version)…

foggy

“What is that?” you ask? Well, that a look outside my window at about 4am or so Monday morning. It was so foggy and misty out that I wanted to snap a picture just for reference. I got this mess instead. So I tried again a few times and pretty much got the same result. Yeah, it’s not art or good photography, but what can I say? I was about to go to sleep and pop up less than two hours later to hit the laundry and get it over with before the cold snap hit. The weather has been getting pretty unusual over the past few years, but I can’t recall so many extremes in such a short time around here.

It was 75 degrees about a week or so ago and in the space of 24 hours here, the drop from the low 50’s to below zero is making news (and news reporters stupid). Granted, this stuff does happen in many places, but usually when it gets cold like this it stays like this for the better part of a week. As it stands, the snap here is just that, as temperatures are zipping up to about 40 in a day or so (it’s a regular heatwave!) and as usual, people are going into winter shopping panic mode, stocking up on things they stocked up on already as a form of exercise and protective paranoia.

foggy (1) foggy (2) foggy (3) foggy (4) foggy (5) foggy (6)

Granted, I’d prefer if some of those running around doing the headless chicken stayed the hell home and stopped coughing and sneezing around me and at least some of them would remember to bathe more regularly (seriously, there’s nothing like the scent of the great unwashed as you’re sitting in a public spot trying to write only to be distracted by a punch in the nose from a smelly person in smellier clothing who’s NOT homeless, mind you). But what can you do but hold your breath and perhaps raise and eyebrow in the general direction of someone offending. There’s no thrill quite like telling a total stranger to cover his nose and mouth as you’re covering your own from the germs and odor wafting your way. Yuck.

Oh, Ha. Oops. I Forgot to Give You All A Card. Sort Of…

planet

So, yeah – that’s my non-denominational and generic holiday card above. I already posted this image on facebook a few days or a week back, but forgot to run it here (duh!). It’s actually an old watercolor I did oh, back around 1998 or so (if not earlier that decade). I used to hand-paint dozens of these and send them out to people I knew, but I simply haven’t been able to find the time to do this in quite some time. Back then, each one was different in size because I used assorted scraps from a pile of assorted watercolor paper I’d collected from the art store I worked at (they normally discarded these bits and pieces, but I decided to recycle!) , but had more or less the same image. Anyway, Happy/Merry Whatever and Peace somewhere or other (but here on earth first, as it’s nice to actually enjoy some silence once in a while)… Back in a bit.

BUY IT! Tale Of Tales Prototype Sales: It’s Off The Scales

ToT_Anniversary If you’re a firm believer in the Games are Art school of thought and you’ve never, ever seen or played anything from Tale of Tales, you’re not only missing out on some outstandingly creative work, you’re also probably not seeing games as ACTUAL art pieces. Whether or not you’re interested in game development or art or seeing how interactive and non interactive projects comes together, in celebration of their 10 year anniversary the developer is offering up some truly amazing prototypes, demos and other neat stuff for a small donation, Which, by the way, will help fund their next title. For a minimum of $5, you can access at least 35 demos, test builds, a few different screensavers and more which are available as 18 separate downloads. Being a silent fan of their work for a few years, I paid the full $15, as this stuff is worth much more than that and in the words of the mighty Valkor, “I love seeing a plan come together!”

Anyway, take a peek at the Anniversary page and see the whopping amount of stuff up for grabs. Once you buy the collection, you’ve got 13 days to download it all (more than enough time) and forever to enjoy it. I say this stuff is a MUST if you’re even thinking of getting into game development or want to see the art and game world truly merging in your own virtual gallery. This is a LIMITED time offer than expires on Christmas, so definitely do this NOW if you’re interested! I wish more developers large and small would open up their vaults in this manner, as there are MANY games that never see the light of day despite multiple builds that are well worth seeing and playing just for historical and educational purposes. I guess we’ll see if this becomes a trend in the future (I sure hope it does!)…

MUST-READS: Beautiful Lego Will Make You Want To Become A Plastic Architect…

beautifullego_cover2_webThe cover alone of Mike Doyle’s Beautiful Lego is a showstopper, but inside this 280-page $29.99 paperback are some of the most incredible examples of LEGO art you’ll ever seen in such a wide range of categories and styles that it’s impossible to NOT be rendered utterly speechless every few pages. Doyle’s own work is spectacular and rages from that stunning cover image to gorgeously ruined half-destroyed homes constructed in black, white and gray LEGO pieces.

Many other supremely talented artists contribute work as well ranging from realistic looking buildings and vehicles, cute animal builds, plenty of surprising characters from comics and movies, sci-fi spaceships, robots and mecha and other creations ranging from mosaics to surreal “Meta” works. And if you happen to be a Monty Python fan, there are a few very humorous recreations of skits that will have you grinning before you read the captions. The question “Why LEGO?” is answered by some of the artists here and it seems the answers all go back to the core element of guys and gals wanting to make those hard plastic shapes do things they’re not made to do and some more in-depth answers that are pretty deep if you’re one of those who thinks LEGOs aren’t made for artistic purposes.

BLEGO_176-177_webAnd yes, don’t be surprised if about halfway through this book you find yourself wanting to check that hall closet to see if there’s that dusty old box of LEGO bricks still hanging out on that top shelf. Of course, you’ll probably be a bit rusty compared to Doyle and the other outstanding artists here, but thankfully, there’s a book for that as well from the fine folks at no starch press. Hmmmm.. I do happen to have space to build stuff, but I need the time and LEGOs. A whole LOT of LEGOs. And a whole LOT of money to buy those LEGOs. And a willing assistant. Wait, do I have time for a new hobby these days? Hmmmm… OK, and a WORKING time machine (most probably made from LEGOs)…

NYCC 2013: IDW’s 2014 Lineup: Kirby, Steranko, Gibbons. Your Wallet’s Gone (And They’re Not Done Yet)…

KIRBY_NEW_GODS_COVER WATCHMEN_cover steranko_fury_AGENT_OF_SHIELD steranko_fury_and_cap

Every time I get a press release from IDW Comics, I fear opening it just because I just KNOW that it’s going to be for one of their spectacular new classic comic collections and I’ll want to add it to my already too long want list. Nevertheless, I forge ahead, click and drool away, knowing I can’t afford any of them, but hoping I’ll actually get to get my grubby paws on a copy someone I know buys when they see it here on the site. Anyway, the company’s 2014 lineup is rolling out in the form of a few press releases (below the jump), so ogle those covers above for as long as you like and then pawn off a kidney (preferably not yours). These books will be in the usual limited run actual art size editions IDW is well known for. OK, put on your reading shoes – you’ve got some press releases to pore over!

Random Art: What’s Old Is Still Old. The Post Is New, Though…

New York City 1984-85 (Custom) More digging through the vaults, folks. Yup, it’s kind of awful, but back in 1984 I was still learning (well, teaching myself how to work a brush and dip pen around in some India ink. I kind of wish I had a time machine, as there’s a load of artwork that I did back then that’s no longer around and a nice chunk was pretty solid from what I recall responses on it being back then. Of course, I’d be time traveling with a baseball bat to get the people who stole a bunch of my work in school and a few other places (well, only if I could vanish into the present and get away clean. Hey, thieves deserve no less than a knock to the head, I say!)… or at least make them BUY the stuff they stole, grrrr…

Anyway, blah and blah, blah. Maybe I’ll post more stuff from the vaults one of these days. I’m kind of swamped at the moment with actual work. This is just some filler because I’m having an off day…

Random Art: Another From The Vaults, Fan Art Division…

Dark Horse Melange

Did I post this old art already? Who knows? I don’t think I did, but I can’t sleep tonight (well, this morning) and needed to do something before I went bananas. Anyway, this is a scan of a bad photocopy of postcard fan art I did for Dark Horse Comics back around 1994.I did a bunch of these in black and white and color and I believe all got published in a few issues of Diamond Previews catalogs over the course of a year or so. I haven’t done much color art since, but I’m tempted every so often. I’m not a big fan of digital color myself (well, I can’t do it very well), so if I do dive back into this illustration thing, it’ll be old school watercolor and mixed media for me. Hmm… I’m feeling a bit sleepier just typing this post, so perhaps this is working after all…

Holiday Gift Guide 2013: Tequila Clase Azul Does Double Duty For Drinking Or Display…

Bottles_Clase_Azul_&_La PintaWhile some quality tequilas are marketed through expensively shot TV ads that use handsome and famous spokesmen in fine suits extolling the virtues of paying a premium price for them (while giving the competition a put down or three), all you really need to do is look at a bottle of Tequila Clase Azul to know you’re getting a superb product. One of the highlights of this past week’s Luxury Review was hopping over to the Clase Azul booth to try three of their three quality tequilas and a nifty flavored liqueur.

The smooth Clase Azul Plata ($80), the wonderfully aged Clase Azul Reposado ($91), and the pomegranate-infused La Pinta ($65) were at the event and making all who stepped up to sample walk away smiling. Sadly, the very limited edition Clase Azul Ultra ($2,000) wasn’t available at the event, but that’s because a mere 100 bottles are made at a time of this exquisitely aged beverage and those sell out right away to wealthy tequila fans looking for the ultimate and willing to pay more for the privilege.

Random Art: Stuff to Not Wake Up and See #5 (Collect ‘em All!)

succubus lich

If you’re going by the dictionary definition (well, a modern dictionary) or watch too much Cinemax, the idea of the humble Succubus going about her nightly work might actually sound a bit too thrilling to some of the guys out there (she’s SO sassy!), but you may want to pay attention. Or at least wish you paid MORE attention back in school.

Allow me to learn you by stealing my own quote here:

There’s nothing like running into one of these ladies of the evening, which just so happen to be the possessed (and extremely pissed off) corpses of mistreated ladies of the evening.

Unlike your garden variety succubus, these much more evil things aren’t going to try and lure you in with batting eyelashes and swivel-hipped strolling. Let’s just say you’re not going to forget your first time, as it’ll be your last (and yep, it’s going to hurt quite a lot)…

So, yeah… Pleasant Dreams (BTW, just keep the window shut and maybe wear something with lavender sprinkled on it. Succubi HATE lavender)…
