Dishonored Preview: Arkane Studios and Bethesda Are Cooking Up An Instant Classic

With its innovative gameplay, distinctive look inspired by classic illustrators such as N.C. Wyeth and Charles Dana Gibson, an incredible cityscape created by Visual Design Director Viktor Antonov with Art Director Sébastien Mitton and the rarefied air of a product that knows how great it’s going to be to those who “get” it, Dishonored has shot up to the top of the list of games I really want to play (and see succeed in this era of sequels and retreads). Arkane Studios has been going full steam ahead with this all-new PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 IP, a single player focused and yes, story-driven game that allows players do tackle missions in just about any way they desire.  Without a multiplayer mode in sight (thankfully), Arkane is showing that a strong story and stronger gameplay can do wonders for an industry where relying or retreading popular multiplayer modes has decimated some games and genres into a depressingly generic formula year after year.

How Diablo III Is Helping Me Improve My Art (Um, Thanks, Blizzard!)

Ah, Blizzard, Blizzard, Blizzard… I absolutely LOVE Diablo III so far…. when I can actually get to play it.  When I’m not playing it because of an error message or other issue that’s not my fault, I have to do something while I’m waiting for things to get back to “normal”.  If I don’t have my Vita or DS handy, I’ll draw something instead. The piece on the left is one I did when I got bounced from a solo game due to some connection issues on my end and couldn’t get back in thanks to an error of some sort on the server side. Mad Cow? I’ve Got A Beef? Bum Steer? Whatever – that’s the not so happy side of the game that I and a few other seem most testy about. But it’s tough love, grrr!!!!

Amusingly enough, today I convinced a woman waiting outside a Gamestop for it to open so she could return a sealed copy of the game to keep it. She bought it for her son’s birthday on Saturday (at his request), but someone at her job pointed her to Metacritic’s “user” scores and reviews for the game (a VERY biased and useless barometer, given the way the site has been abused to “bomb” games unfairly as a means of protest by people who haven’t played and don’t intend to play certain high profile games), which in turn, sent her to the shop at the cost of being an hour late for her job.  I spent the better part of ten minutes telling her the game’s good points and how despite the stiff requirements about solo play (she didn’t mind at all – she wants her son to stay away from some kids who’ve been harassing him at school) and other problems (which are common to other MMOs), it was an excellent purchase. She left feeling a lot better, so that’s my good deed for the week, game-wise.

The art of the right? I did this during a login error that kept me from getting into my solo game completely even after repeated attempts and rebooting. That’s how I feel about people who can’t enjoy the game as much as they like even though they’ve waited years for it. Sure, Blizzard owes them noting but a game that’s the best it can be, and in fact, when things are running smoothly, it’s exactly that.  On the other hand, I  feel sorry for those who maybe did the midnight launch/call in sick deal only to end up not doing much playing at all after all that buying and lying. Somewhere, a boss is laughing at you as he docks your pay because you ranted about the game on your Facebook page and he saw it. Oops.

As to what art you’ll see from me about the game itself. Probably not a damn thing, as when I’m in the zone, I’m not stopping to draw at all. It’ll be a little while before I actually post a review, but for what it’s worth (and as noted), I do like what I’m playing quite a bit, nasty and annoying warts and all…

Malevolence: The Sword of Ahkranox Lives! (Or: Kickstarter, Ahoy!)

Nice news from Down Under, as I just got the word that Malevolence: The Sword of Ahkranox is now a Kickstarter project. This great looking old-school turn-based RPG has gotten a few big pushes this past week or so thanks to a great and funny article that goes into game design and manages to bring Kevin Bacon into the mix without him actually being involved in the project.  Er, go read it, as it makes more sense that me explaining it. Anyway, the new digs over at Kickstarter, plus the boost from Kevin Bacon (hee hee) has helped the game see a nice kick towards its goal, so go do the right thing and support these guys and gals!  We need more Infinte RPGs like this, I say!

Oh, Hell… It’s Diablo III!

To make my Monday even more a kick in the pants, I get a retail copy of Diablo III (whee!) that I can’t play for a few reasons (booo!). However, unlike the Windows debacle I’m currently dealing with, i actually have a plan B that I set in motion a while ago so I can actually play the game using a friend’s PC at his place. Fortunately, I hooked him on Diablo II a while back and as he’s not what you call a “core” gamer, he’s happy that he’ll get to be see what all the fuss is about (and eventually play the game himself, as he’s in no tearing hurry to be a day one fanatic). Anyway, there’s nothing I can do now except wait until the servers go live. Too bad the game can’t be installed and played offline (as it should, grrr). Hell, I’d at LEAST have a single player review up by the end of the week if that were the case…

Double Fine Adventure Episode One: They Still Want Your Money. And They’re Going To Get It, Too…

Now with PayPal! Yup, even though about 3.3 million dollars was raised so for, a LOT of people who wanted to get in on the Kickstarter thing couldn’t because the wanted to go the PayPal route. Now, you can indeed not only get a copy of the game if you have an account there, you’re also getting access to the dev diaries as they’re released and you can start posting your thoughts and such in the game’s contributors forums. Nice!

Is Game of Thrones Another Euro-Sleeper RPG Hit? I Think So…

Oops. Until today, I had no idea that Cyanide Studios had been working on their upcoming RPG, Game of Thrones on and off for about seven years (yes, even before the mega-hit TV show was around, this one was in the pot cooking away). As you’ll can see from the video link, the dev team members are not only huge fans of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire, they’ve done the smart thing and not based their story on the books or HBO series. Crafting an original tale and spending quality time tinkering away on things for so lone, THEN going in to add in some familiar faces plus a multi-path dialog system takes some dedicated work that deserves a play through or two (or more).  Well, I guess we’ll see how the game is next week -I’m looking forward to seeing how well it fits into what’s already in place…

Max Payne 3 Launch Trailer: Watch It Now, As Next Week You’ll Be Too Busy Playing…

It’s up and yes, it’s fantastic.  Amusingly enough, for a very short period of time, I was worried that Rockstar wasn’t doing enough to get the word out on all the hard work the dev team was doing on this one. Ha! I should have figured the all-out blitz would kick in closer to the release date. I’m looking forward to the story more than the MP modes, but I like how they tie together and would love to see more games tackle this in a similar fashion (without stealing the idea cold, of course)….

Assassin’s Creed III Gameplay Trailer: Er, Its Not Historically Accurate (But You Don’t Care, Right?)

 

Ah ha ha. I made the mistake of reading a few too many message board posts elsewhere about this trailer (well, I got caught up in cracking up at some pretty lousy arguments that make no sense because this IS just a game at the end of the day), but no matter what’s been said about it, one thing is crystal clear: Ubisoft knows what they’re doing. I haven’t enjoyed the series all that much, but I do like the new setting and time period. Still, I can’t help but imagine some school teaching a course in history as seen through video games like this and others that take actual fact and twist them into a rich game world along with a few historical figures along for the ride. Eh, whatever – as long as this one’s better than the last and well-cooked enough to rate a few replays, I’m all aboard for this ride…

BioShock Infinite’s Delay Of Game Is Actually GREAT News…

…Especially IF you’re Arkane Studios and Bethesda Softworks, that is. Dishonored, the absolutely gorgeous and innovative upcoming first-person stealth action game (which some are unfairly over-comparing to Irrational’s game), is coming later this year, and as it’s equally well-crafted and also shares a few MINOR similarities with BI (both games take place in fictional worlds based loosely on 19th Century America or a Victorian-themed pseudo London setting, both have a steampunk aesthetic to them, and both look amazing), it SHOULD be on your old-timey radarscope thingamajig too, I say.

The big deals about Dishonored are its stellar art direction and is its more flexible gameplay that allows players to possess people or certain animals or play the entire story without killing a single person, plus a lot more that has to be seen to be believed. Yeah, yeah – my preview is late, but that’s because I’ve been occupied with some other stuff. Still, stick around, as I’m going through my notes now and should have something up soon….

Wolfenstein 3D Is Older Than Too Many People Who SHOULD Pay It More Respect…

Sure, it looks hideous compared to whatever modern FPS you drool over and line up for year after year, but if not for John Carmack and this formerly controversial Nazi-killing corridor shooter, you wouldn’t all be standing outside in the rain at midnight for Master Chief, any Modern Warfare game or hell, pretty much every other FPS on the market. That said, Bethesda has made this classic shooter playable for free as a browser game on Bethsoft’s Wolfenstein page or the game’s official Facebook page, so go check it out. Also, click away HERE for a great YouTube video commentary with Carmack about the game – you just might learn something in the process (like some respect!)
