Ville and Anne Mönkkönen’s absolutely excellent adventure/RPG/comedy hybrid has finally gotten a really awesome new alpha build you can try out NOW. Go on, now… it won’t bite! In addition to being a well-made and fun to play game experience, it’s also one of those indie games that’s actually not flailing about and trying to be too hip or intentionally “retro” for its own good. Anyway, big new areas adding a few hours to the playtime, a nicely creepy new mist effect, some lovely character portraits by Johanna Sundström and yep, you can still make your own mods using the wonderful game editor. Even better, you can request a discount code for %20 off the price of the final version and use it when the game is complete and ready to “ship” via download from the Instant Kingdom website (I had to keep the nautical theme from the game going, sorry). What, you’re still reading this? Go download the demo already!

GOG.com Gives Away Two Ultima Games (There Goes My Schedule Out The Window)…
Oh, they’re doing it again…. this time, it’s two really spectacular spin-offs from a seminal PC role-playing game franchise. Just clicky-click away here and here to get both games for nothing at all, as even a gog.com account is FREE. While you’re at it, you may as well check out the site to see what other inexpensive (not free, but amazingly cheap) DRM-free classic to current games they have (the library is ridiculously impressive and growing). Finally, don’t forget to vote in their daily Battle of the Games promo where YOU (yes, you!) decide which of the two games fighting it out gets a bigger discount. If you pop in today to vote, you’ll see Quantic Dream’s excellent adventure/action game Fahrenheit has a massive advantage over the poor (yet classic) Alone in the Dark collection (historically, that’s a big boo-boo, but in terms of production values and the “coolness” factor, David Cage and his team win).
Laugh of the Day: Intel Makes Folks Go Batty For An Ultrabook
OK, how come I’m never around when one of these wacky but cool Ultrabook promos happens? I could use a new laptop myself, as I’m sure the folks at Starbucks are tired of seeing me stroll in with my desktop on a hand truck when I need to take advantage of that free Wi-Fi access. All I’ve ever gotten for free here in NYC while strolling about is a lungful of cigarette smoke from exiled office workers forced to puff away outside their workplaces. Then again, given these videos were shot in Bangkok and Jakarta, the airfare alone would break my bank account.
Ah well… at this point, I’ll take a stale muffin sample over more Marlboro clouds…

With its October 4 US release date right around the corner, here’s a last at the latest Dark Souls trailer plus some awesome one of a kind statues created by one of the game’s biggest fans, sculptor Peter Nordstrom. These five absolutely beautiful artworks are actually being given away over on the Dark Souls community page, so there will be a few lucky gamers who are going to walk away with some incredible showpieces you won’t find anywhere else. If you want to give it a shot, it;’s actually not too late. Just head on over to the PREPARE TO DIE Forums and have at their interesting puzzle contest. Good Luck! Continue reading
Valve Offers PC. Mac Versions Of Portal Free (As An Educational Tool)
Valve is always doing some rather fun stuff with their older games, and now they’re giving educators a chance to share one of the coolest puzzle games ever with their classes without paying a dime for it. Even better, it’s supposed to be for purely “educational” purposes, meaning it would be awesome if some clever teacher out there actually downloaded this for a class and used it in a lesson plan. All you need is a Steam account and a PC or MAC capable of running the game and boom, you’re in. This offer expires on September 20, 2011, so act fast. Hopefully Valve will extend this deal a bit longer. Click on over to Learn With Portals and prepare to be schooled in more ways than one.
Random Game of the Week: FOTONICA
Indie game development is all the rage these days to the point that it’s changed the way games are made and marketed (some would say for the worse in the long run, but I don’t agree and that’s another article for another time). I often play way too many of these when I should be doing more important things, but it’s always great to discover buried treasures before they get uncovered by the usual suspects and dragged out into the sunlight for all to play as some sort of next big thing.
Anyway, Santa Ragione’s spectacular FOTONICA was recommended by a friend and I’m glad I took his advice. It’s a simple, one button game with a stylized look and fast-paced, but easy to grasp gameplay you’ll want to experience for yourself. PC and Mac compatible the game is also a free download (but there’s a suggested ‘pay what you want’ donation I’d suggest you use just to support the developer). Anyway, enough blabbing from me. I’ve a busy day ahead – go play a game today!

I made a rather interesting “mistake” a few months back and I don't think I'll recover anytime soon, nor do I want to. I'd stopped playing Fallout: New Vegas while waiting for a patch to be released and one thing I did during that downtime was check out QCF Design's Desktop Dungeon, a free rogue-like RPG that condenses hours of gameplay into quick ten minute (or less) sessions. The “mistake” was downloading, then playing the game, thinking it would be yet another well-intentioned indie with a few too many charming flaws. Oops. That ten minute session (which was actually twelve, according to my PC clock) hooked me in and I've ended up finding a few minutes every other day or so to dive into DD for a quick session or eight. Best mistake I've ever made, but definitely very lousy for productivity, laundry and a few other non-Desktop Dungeons related things.
Plane Weaver Walkthrough Video
What? You haven’t tried Plane Weaver yet? Er… well, my review is coming tomorrow, but I thought I’d post the walkthrough for this PAX 10 winner first, as the game can be a bit tricky in a few spots. Anyway, the game is a really cool platformer with puzzle and adventure elements, excellent graphics and sound all done by a small group of Danish students in a month. Go download it (click on the link above – it’s free and only around 66MB), install and play it and when you get stuck (it’ll happen eventually), watch this video and thank me later.
Yes, this does indeed contains spoilers (well, it IS a video of someone playing the game!).
