Malevolence: The Sword of Ahkranox Update (Late!): Closer, Yet Still More To Do…

OK, OK, I’ve been a bit swamped under other stuff, so I’ve been bad and not posting all the Malevolence updates I need to. Well, part of that is for some reason, YouTube hasn’t been informing me when a new video is uploaded and I’m way too occupied in some projects to keep poking around. Anyway, here’s a gameplay update from the 13th (above) and some not quite in sync audio to go with more gameplay.

I wish I was one of the lucky ones testing this game, but I can’t do that with my crappy connection, that’s for sure. Still, I’ll keep my paws crossed that the team does well enough to find a small publisher who can get this out on a disc at some point, as this is a game I really want to play (and has been for a while).

Buy It! The Art of Journey (or, My Psychic Powers Are Working Just Fine, Thank You…)

 

Ha and ha ha. I recall telling some folks from thatgamecompany a while back at a press event that an art book on the making of their groundbreaking PS3 exclusive Journey HAD to be released along with the game on a physical disc at some point and guess what? both are happening. Awesome, especially for those of us who KNOW that this medium NEEDS both a digital and physical means to archive milestones like this particular game.  It’s too bad that the pressure of making the game has broken up the team, but it looks as if everyone had landed elsewhere and at the end of the day, the game is still an incredible experience not to be missed.

Anyway, buy this book if you’re a fan of the game and hell, if you’re not a fan of the game and own a PS3, get the Journey Collector’s Edition when it hits stores and this book so you can see what all the fuss is about. Hmmm… Now I know what I want for Xmas (or a late birthday gift for myself, or an early retirement present, or whatever)…

CREEPY: An Old Friend Makes Another Comeback (Thanks To Dark Horse Comics)

Yikes, I’m old.  I used to have a HUGE collection of Warren mags back in the day with a few boxes of Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella, Famous Monsters of Filmland and even a handful of Blazing Combat issues taking up room along with my massive comic collection.  I sold them all off a few years back as more and more video games started taking over my free space (and time), but every so often it’s good to relive the days of ogling great art (much of it from a wide rage of comic legends) and occasionally being freaked out by a well-written horror tale.

These days, Dark Horse Comics is keeping that frightening little flame alive this fall with a new issue coming up, so keep your eyeballs peeled at your favorite comics emporium, I say. Oh, I was going to make a joke about that monster looking like the headboard from Hell or something, but I probably wouldn’t sleep right later.  Nothing like that monster under the bed getting pissed off because you now think it doesn’t exist, right?  Hmmmm… now I need a pot of coffee…

He’s Baaaaack (And In a Better, Harder Game This Time)…

Shhhhh… don’t tell anyone this, but Behaviour Interactive and 505 Games are going to be unleashing a big and furry surprise on PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers soon enough that’s a pretty nice treat from what I got to see and play. I can’t talk more about it until the embargo lifts (soon enough, soon enough…), so I’ll just keep you in suspense for a tiny bit.

Er, that and I need to figure out how the hell to get that darn bear from stalking me (I think he’s on the roof, judging by the sounds of pigeons being squashed). Anyway, drop by on the 28th for a status update (provided that bear doesn’t get into the house)…  Off to bed (with a light on and a few bear traps slathered in honey laid out near key entry points)…

Ragnarok Odyssey US Trailer: Vita JRPG Lovers, Xseed Wants All Your Spare Time

Packing in a lengthy quest mode, a real time battle system focused on combos and contact, up to four player co-op via ad hoc or online, lovely visuals and some nice connections to the popular MMO series, this one could be an instant classic when it’s released. As someone who liked Ragnarok DS quite a lot and knows this game is going to be a whole lot better, I can’t wait to see how it turned out. My Vita’s getting hungry for more dungeons and drooling denizens determined to drop doom on my poor party. Fat chance, demon-spawn, fat chance, I say, grrrr!

Tokyo Jungle: I’d Have Worked A Wall of Voodoo Song Into This PS3 Game’s Trailer…

 

Specifically, the eternally quirky “Animal Day” off 1981’s excellent Dark Continent LP. Well, that’s the sone I’d pick if I were working in SCEA’s marketing department. That and hey, this was on a Blu-Ray in Japan, but it’s only getting a PSN release here, grrr.  If i were running things out west, or at least had a say in matters, I’d have done a release through PSN as well as a double-game disc with this and Papo & Yo or rain on it plus a few demos of other PSN titles and yes, added a PlayStation Plus discount voucher to the game case so more people could play both games. I’m just saying, the MORE people that can access this content, the better in the long run for SCEA (and gamers, too!)

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron Launch Trailer: These ARE The Droids You’re Looking For!

 

Tomorrow is the happy day for Activision and High Moon Studios as their big metal baby storms into retail before landing snugly in consoles all across North America. All that hard work they’ve put into what’s looking like the best Transformers game to date should make fans all to happy to snap this up like hotcakes. If War for Cybertron kept you busy for weeks, the new customization modes, addition of fan favorite characters, even more thrilling gameplay and what looks like some ridiculously fun multiplayer modes should have you practically living in front of your TV. Of course, you kids headed back to school had better get that gaming in before you have to hit the books hard. You don’t want to end up being a video games journalist or something equally low-rent (little in-joke there)…

Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time Gamescom Trailer: Making Mascots Matter (Mostly)

 

I’ve been having an interesting conversation with a friend about the “need” for this sort of AAA mascot platformer in these days of more gritty games and less humor in too many major releases. We’re both not against the idea of this genre and yes, there are plenty of fun (and funny) indie games to fill the gaps should the mascot platformer just about vanish from the next generation of consoles. That said, outside anything “new” Nintendo has been doing with the Mario franchise, I’m seeing a bit too much by the numbers programming where deja vu takes the place of actual innovation and true creativity. Or hell, perhaps I’m getting too jaded about thing (which isn’t a good sign). I think not, though – I’m just old enough to know when a game is going the rote route.

Maybe it’s developers trying too hard to recapture what made many classic platformers great or maybe it’s just that we’re seeing the genre finally winding down after so many games from great to terrible. Either way, it’s looking as if Sanzaru’s upcoming Sly Cooper game will be part of a dying breed unless we start seeing a resurgence in the genre that features new and equally memorable mascots and gameplay that’s worth buying a new console for. Then again, you don’t need a new system to play the best platformers (or mascot games) ever made, right?

Konami On Air Gamescom 2012 Wrap-Ups (Day 4 & 5)

 

Oops. With all the stuff I’m working on I forgot that (since I’m not at the show) Gamescom was still going on. Here’s Konami’s final two days of content from the show floor. I’ll probably post the longer On Air videos about Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and the two Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 games on the other blog at some point this week. Too much to do, not enough time, as usual! OK, off to get some much-needed sleep.

 

Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault: Well, If You’re Skewing Younger, It’s A Step Forward…

Well, it looks as if since R & C All 4 One, Insomniac is cutting out any chance of this series being as “edgy” as it once was. Of course, that’s to be expected with the franchise running for so long across two console cycles (and soon to be two portable ones). Granted, if you think about it, the visual style has always been that of a modern CG cartoon influenced by many classics from days gone by now geared to kids. I’m also betting that the dev tem members with younger kids are making a game they can play with them as opposed to cranking out yet another game made for the fans who want nothing to change, ever.

That’s one BIG reason for new IP folks – it keeps stuff like this from dragging out into the land of diminishing returns. Bring on Overstrike, I say.
