Coming Up For Air (Volume XVIII)…

So, my import copy of Chikyuu Boueigun Portable 3 for the Vita arrived yesterday and yes, between that, Retro City Rampage and Naughty Bear: Panic in Paradise, I’ve really done nothing else but play all the way into today taking notes as I go. Reviews will go up for each shortly, so stick around for those. So far, it’s recommendations all around, if you want the short versions of all three…

Back in a bit…

Max Team’s Monster World RPG: Taking A Sega Classic To The Next Level

While I do play a LOT of fan-made games paying homage to classics of the 8 and 16-bit eras, Max Team’s Monster World RPG project is one of the better works in progress I’ve seen to date. Initially released as a simple RPG Maker 2003 passion project back in 2005, the game has since been reworked into a much more polished game worthy of being put onto a Sega Genesis cartridge. Even though it’s far from the flashiest game made with the ancient game creation software, the dedication to replicating the specific look of the MW games while turning it into a turn-based RPG with an active time battle system out of the Final Fantasy games is on point and the nostalgic vibe works perfectly. The two hard working guys behind this free RPG, Massimo and Fernando, met up about a year after Massimo completed the first version of the game and needed help in expanding the game further. Random Game Art (Not Mine): Another World Poster

OK, I’m stupidly busy playing a bunch of games in my to-do queue (including of of the biggest surprises of the year, VBlank’ Games’ spectacular and hilarious Retro City Rampage for the Vita & PS3, coming soon to more platforms – BUY IT! ) and getting some Holiday Gift Guide products reviewed, but I may as well give you something to look at, so here you go: A lovely piece of art done for the classic PC game Another World (or Out of This World if you live in North America). For some reason, this game popped into my head (probably due to reading p a few too many posts about adventure games making a comeback this year when they never really disappeared in the first place) and I did a quick search to see if there was a site still up for this classic. Turns out there is and if you’re running WIndows XP, you can get a nice demo of that version to try out. It’s one of the all-time great (and hard!) adventure games that still brings back some find memories for me. OK, enough wistful nostalgia – back to the salt mines. Lots of updates to come this weekend!

EA’s Going To Surprise A Few Folks (Me Included)…

Most of the games I saw and played yesterday are under embargo for a few days or up to next month, so I can’t spill all the beans yet, but let’s just say some of you naysayers are going to be eating a load of crow when it comes to certain titles in their lineup. I’ll start rolling out previews for each title as their embargoes lift, but while you’re waiting, I’ll keep you posted on stuff I can write about over the next few days on the mobile and console front. OK, I’m off to bed for two hours, as I have a LOT to do and need to hop up and get an earlier start than usual…

He-Man: Chillingo and GlitchSoft’s iOS Platformer Has The Power!

Say what you will about tablet and device games (or the devices themselves as gaming platforms), but once in a while you get to see something that’s just plain flat-out awesome enough to make you want to change your mind completely.  For me, that would be EA and Chillingo’s spectacular He-Man: The Most Powerful Game in the Universe, a classic side scrolling action game from GlitchSoft that’s going to shock many with how good it is. Despite being developed in a relatively brief time (it was started a few months ago), the dev team has managed to make a game that looks fantastic (you really have to see it in motion in person to appreciate this) and has a great sense of humor about itself while being a blast of nostalgia older games can enjoy with their kids as they introduce the character and his friends to a new generation of gamers…

Of Orcs & Men Launch Trailer: The Big Guy, The Little Guy And The World Against Them

OK, Of Orcs & Men  is pretty much here already, so it’s all up to you out there to decide if it’s worth a buy. Tfe concept alone makes me want to drop the money on it, Yeah, yeah, orcs have been in PLENTY of RPGs and other games, but not quite like this and not with a goblin thief/assassin sidekick – and both are the main characters. If Spiders and Cyanide Studios can pull it off (they already have the great-looking visuals), it’s a surefire sleeper hit. If not, it’s a bargain bin special in a few weeks (a sad fate for a game that took a while to make and looks so solid). As always… we shall see…

Spy Hunter Returns – This Time On 3DS and Vita

I was laughing when I saw this trailer because I have too many memories of the arcade original and I bet not a lot of gamers this one is targeted to even know where the theme song in the original game comes from. Oh well – if the game is as cool as the first one in terms of action and replay value, I’m all in and then some…

Divinity Anthology Collector’s Edition: Sheer Heaven For RPG Fans

Larian Studios has a keen sense of humor as you can see above, but this is one serious collection you may want to grab from the Larian Vault before it’s sold out completely. A measly thirty bucks gets you three great RPGs and a ton of bonus content, meaning you’ll be trapped inside your home this fall and winter, calling in sick from work or something similar. All the best excuses are taken, by the way – just tell the truth and maybe get your boss hooked on these games as well, I say.  Even though I own all three games on disc (and I have both versions of Divinity II on the Xbox 360), I’m sorely tempted to grab one of these CE packs before they vanish forever…

Anyway, click HERE to check out the complete listing of fun, fun stuff in this SIGNED retail (YES!) package that’s also available digitally (and unsigned) for those of you who like to pretend you have a game collection. Yeah, that’s right, I said it – you can take your Minority Report grabbing at air and pulling invisible files and stick that nonsense in the trash folder. Me, I want something that will fall on my hard head if I put it on the shelf wrong. Then again, I take care of my games, so fat chance of that happening…

October 16, people – get to the clicking and buying, already. Larian needs a new boat or car or string of polo ponies or something.

Retro City Rampage: Buy This Game Or It Will Come To Your House And Beat You…

Yeah, you know who you are. Laugh at these awesome visuals at your own peril, kids. Listen up: I’m old, so I KNOW exactly what’s going to happen here. Codgers like me will groove on the sprite-heavy, colors a’poppin graphics, tough as nails gameplay and huge open world that means we’ll be hooked in for weeks. Ironic hipster types (bless their bespectacled hearts) who think they’re cooler than they are in real life will remember the indie games they played over the past few years and get the retro vibe full on. Meanwhile, the wee ones under a certain age who think every damn game MUST be a FPS or packing “realistic” 3D graphics that require a PC upgrade every three weeks or new console or whatever will be laughing and pointing like the fools they are until they pick up a controller and get a butt cheek handed back to them by some random digital thug. It’s all about respect, as I keep saying… and Canadian developer Vblank Entertainment is going to learn you whippersnappers a thing or two.

Your PS3 is starving for this one, and so is your Vita… so yeah, do the right thing and get this game, Before it gets YOU.
