Game Appreciation 101 (Part I): The Phantasy Star III Project

It took about 21 years, but I finally appreciate Phantasy Star III. Not that I was playing the game for that long, mind you. It just took me that long to see everything it has to offer and while it’s still flawed, I now have a bit more respect for the final product.  Like a number of Sega Genesis owners back in 1991, I didn’t like the game all that much. The visuals were dull compared to the original and sequel, the story was a confusing mess from the start and unless you paid good money for the strategy guide, it was tough to know what to do in a few key moments. A mere two save slots didn’t help either in a game with four possible outcomes. In my case, my younger brother and I played through the game and only completed two of the four endings. We didn’t shell out for the guide book, but concentrated on power-leveling the party members until getting through dungeons was easy.  I think all that grinding plus the game’s not so hot localization and depressingly bland color palette was what really killed PSIII for us, so back on the shelf it went for about a decade… Continue reading

Dear Esther Update: Official Trailer/Steam Store Link

It’s too damn bad that a game as great as Dear Esther is going to be limited to being a download-only game when it launches on February 14. This is exactly the sort of game project that needs as wide an exposure as possible so as many people can play it without any restrictions on how they can get it. I’m not at all for ANY sort of piracy, mind you – I’m talking about a disc version with the game plus some sort of in-depth feature on how this beautiful yet haunting mod remake was put together, perhaps with the original mod as a bonus. Oh well, Steam is huge and popular, and it costs too much to get packaged games into shops these days, so that’s that, I guess. Unless someone ponies up the bucks for a retail version perhaps distributed exclusively through a few online stores or something…

Starhawk Comes Out The Day After My Birthday…

Yeah, yeah, the public beta is out and plenty of fans have been playing the thing for a while at events and such, but I’m going to jump in feet first on launch day and figure stuff out on my own. Granted, I’m in it for the single player first and foremost, so there’s that. From the bits I have played and seen at Sony press events, I can tell this one’s going to be huge to the point of potentially getting a few gamers away from certain modern shooters for a bit. The team at Lightbox has really cooked up an instant classic and along with some of Sony’s other 2012 surprises, this looks to be the best year for the PS3 (and PS3 owners, of course)…

Touch My Katamari Trailer: It’s Good To Be The King!

Yes, he’s back, as are a few other familiar faces, all headed for a February 22, 2012 date with destiny on the PlayStation Vita. Can TMC roll up the sales and solid reviews big time, or will it be a touchy subject when the game rolls into the bargain bin? I predict minor to medium greatness, provided the target audience snaps it up properly and spreads the good word…

Phantom Breaker Updated Gameplay Trailer

7Sixty Games has released a new trailer for its upcoming 2D fighter, Phantom Breaker and officially announced that the game is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Remember folks, $39.99 gets you the Special Edition that includes a bunch of cool omake goodies you won’t be able to snag anywhere else. Go click that link above and see for yourself. You KNOW you want to…

Still Going… (Energizer Non-Bunny Update)

OK, I’m only up to July 2010 in terms of reformatting, but that’s not too bad. Still, when I get to the point where I can start looking at 2011 and seeing where things are (I think October of last year to now are fine as far as the layout goes), then, I’ll be happier. That is all and good night!

Retro Exploration: Dreamcast (Part 10)

Here’s a small and random mix of art this time plus some boring stuff from a game that SHOULD have gotten some omake love. To the left is the single image found on Rune Caster, a fairly terrible strategy/RPG not released outside Japan. Below are images from assorted DC discs starting from the left with the nice CG art piece from Dogu Senki Haoh, a pretty good import SPRG that also stayed in Japan. Next up is the Nightmare Creatures II logo from the US version of the game, which is on the disc along with a brief Kalisto logo movie clip (it’s the same clip you see when you start the game up). Next to that is the lone wallpaper image from Quantic Dream’s experimental open-world epic, Omikron: The Nomad Soul, a game that could use an actual remake (and a multiplayer mode) one of these days. There’s also a bonus music track on the disc, but I’m working on a post about those for a bit later.

The final two images are what’s on both the US and Japanese Sword of the Berserk discs, and yes, it’s damn disappointing that a game that’s so much fun to play (and a pioneer of QTE’s in modern gaming) gets two lame images found on many DC discs. Ah, well…

Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland Prologue

Gust Inc.’s swan song for Nippon Ichi looks to be their best game to date in the long-running Atelier franchise. Sure, it’s a niche game, but it’s got a nicely sized fan base that snaps up every entry.  Check out the game’s official web site for more info and go pre-order a copy if you like what you see. I say absolutely let NISA know you’re one of those who’ll enjoy the game by getting it directly from their online shop as soon as possible. The game is set for a May 2012 launch, but if you’re getting the Prinny Bomb newsletter sent to your inbox, you’ll have a heads-up as to when pre-orderimg kicks off.

Gallery: SSX

EA Sports’ Communications Manager Duke Indrasigamany looked pleased but slightly annoyed the last time I saw him a few months back at EA’s Holiday event here in NYC. He’d spent the better part of the day playing through a demo build of SSX for small groups of game journalists and it seemed that only a few of them were coming away excited. I passed by the demo area when I entered, planning to loop back around and get some hands-on time with the game, but it took me a while to get there. After a few hours of playing SWTOR (excellent), Syndicate (REALLY surprising), Mass Effect 3 and Battlefield 3’s multiplayer modes (awesome), Funcom’s amazing The Secret World (great, but needs an offline mode), and the Dragon Age II expansion (featuring Felicia Day, everyone’s favorite gal gamer/multimedia star du jour), I finally made my way back to the SSX station and sat down with Sir Duke for a bit of fun in the high mountain air…

Retro Exploration: Dreamcast (Part 9)

BioWare’s offbeat (and interestingly difficult) third-person shooter MDK 2 has a ton of bonus content on the Dreamcast disc that includes plenty of concept/in-game artwork and selected audio tracks such as selected music tracks and outtakes from a few dialog sequences. I’ll run all the artwork below the jump, but hold off on the audio portion for a bit, as I’m thinking about posting all the other tracks I’ve found on my tiny DC library in one post at some point down the road…  Continue reading
