Gallery: 101-in-1 Party Megamix (Updated!)

Atlus just really, really, really wants to take over your gaming life this year. Between the amazing amount of RPG goodness we’re seeing across multiple platforms (Shin Megami Tensei: Persona and Demon’s Souls ftw!), finding time to do normal stuff such as breathe, eat or take a bathroom break is becoming quite a challenge. For me, taking my DS and the ridiculously addictive 101-in-1 Explosive Megamix into the can has on occasion actually led a few folks here to think I pulled an Elvis. Hey, with my schedule, it’s where I get the most quality time with the handheld, so what can I say?

(Wait… that didn’t come out quite right. *Ahem*… moving on…) Continue reading

Gallery: Darkest of Days

It looks as if time traveling first-person shooters just may become the “new black” after all. With games such as Phantom EFX’s soon to be released Darkest of Days for the Xbox 360 and PC, we could finally see some great use of time travel as a viable FPS plot device. Developed by 8monkey Labs, this single player shooter has you playing a soldier named Alexander Morris who gets yanked away from Custer’s Last Stand by a “time agent” and sent on a sprawling time-travel adventure that involves some of the bloodiest battles throughout history. Morris’ goal is to stop a bunch of ne’er do wells from the future from rewriting history with a bit of extreme prejudice of his own while saving the lives of a few folks trapped in the wrong place at the wrong time. Gallery: Scribblenauts Screens + Trailer

One of the games I’m REALLY psyched about this year is Warner Bros. Interactive’s Scribblenauts, the upcoming Nintendo DS game by the geniuses at 5TH Cell (Drawn to Life, Lock’s Quest) set to hit stores on September 16. In case you’ve not yet heard of it, this is absolutely one of the most crazily original games on any platform to date. Thanks to innovative gameplay that’s guaranteed to keep your brain and fingers on their toes as you input words which the game translates into usable on screen objects, I’m actually much more excited about my DS than I am my 360, PS3 and Wii combined. Continue reading

505 Games has announced that its upcoming (and amazing looking) WWII flight combat gameIL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey will hit retail on September 15, 2009 for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PSP and Nintendo DS. Here’s a quick rundown of the game from the press release, followed by some screens and box art: Continue reading

Hands-on: The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road

With tons of excellent RPGs on the Nintendo DS to choose from and more always on the way, it’s getting tough to keep track of them all without counting yourself into a coma. On the other hand, it takes something as innovative, lovely and just plain fun to play as Xseed’s upcoming The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road to snap someone like me out of that snoozy state and wish for a working time machine. While the game isn’t set to hit stores until the fall, I was fortunate enough to get some hands-on time with an English build at a recent Xseed Games press event here in NYC. Continue reading

Preview: Plugging into The Conduit

With Sega’s upcoming Wii-exclusive FPS, The Conduit set to hit retail this month, I had the extremely great fortune to spend some quality hands-on time with the game (along with High Voltage’s Eric Nofsinger and Josh Olson) at a recent press event here in NYC. As an added bonus, actor Mark Sheppard lead character “Agent Michael Ford” in the game) was on hand with full-on enthusiasm for the game, developer and the current state of gaming. Continue reading

Once More, Into the Breach (Onward and Upward)…

Yes, I’m back. Not quite where I’d like to be, but it’s a (re)start. The primary goal of DAF is to shake things up (gently, most of the time) in the way video games are reviewed while nudging you, dear reader, into appreciating more of what’s out there. The title of this blog is more an elbow to the ribs than a call to arms; a sort of a “Now that I have your attention” just to get you reading (and hopefully, responding).

For the past few years, I’ve felt that many major game review sites seem to have lost a good deal of their critical eye, focusing too heavily on bigger-budget, highly anticipated titles while ignoring or completely disrespecting smaller developers or games they feel don’t warrant as much attention. The problem with this is too many great games (that don’t have multimillion dollar advertising budgets) never get the praise they desire until they end up as bargain bin specials and small groups of gamers embrace them, too late for anything resembling decent sales.

Changing this trend won’t be easy, but that’s the plan. I’ll be taking a look at lots of lesser known releases while also commenting on some of the major games for all platforms. Yes, we’re platform agnostic here at DAF since system bias only keeps you from enjoying more good games. In 37 years of gaming from pinball to current gen consoles, I can safely state that I absolutely do not have a favorite console – it’s always been about the games for me, period.

Some of you may be familiar with my work from my fanzine, Continue?, or websites such as VGBlogger, Ace Gamez, the late, lamented BonusStage and Gametour sites as well as a few magazines here and there. Heck, if you own a copy of La Pucelle Tactics for the PlayStation 2, you may have even seen my name in the manual under ‘Special Thanks’ (that’s a cool story for another time, however). Anyway, a few hundred reviews, previews and a couple of in-depth interviews later, I found myself having to drop out of the scene for health reasons (mine and my father’s). During all this, I never stopped playing games and can in fact, state that thanks to a relatively steady diet of assorted console, PC and handheld games, I’m feeling a lot more energized and thankful for the support I’ve gotten from more than a few industry contacts I’ve made over the past ten-plus years.

But enough of the “world’s smallest violin” music playing in the background – I’ll be back later today with a review or two. Stay tuned…
