The first two things you’ll need to realize about Scribblenauts are as follows:

1) it’s not a platformer at all
2) Trying to play it as such will make for quite a bit of frustration

The game is actually a fantastic hybrid puzzle/brain salad sandbox experience that lets you dive in to test your word power in a lot more interactive manner than traditional pen and paper word games. There are a load of puzzle as well as action based challenges that require a bit of thought if you want to see all the game has to offer. If you’re like me (that is, ancient enough to actually remember those classic Infocom or other text-based PC adventure games), what’s here is a bit like those oldies. However, you get to see what you input as text materialize on screen and you can interact with your choices in a number of amusing ways. Of course, you can simply sit back and let what you’re called forth do whatever it wants to do, which in my opinion, is the beauty of Scribblenauts’ design.

Scribblenauts Pre-Launch Event Spells F-U-N at Nintendo World

“What, no B-A-G?” That’s probably what Julie Cheng was thinking when she got the very first retail copy ofScribblenauts... or what you’re probably thinking Julie Cheng was thinking if you look at that photo long enough. Games On TV: Scribblenauts Commercial

Here you go: mildly amusing, although given the game’s superb originality, it comes off as a bit lower key than I thought it would be.

Ah well… I guess Middle America needs this super-clean version that can be shown at all hours of the day without the usual irate parents’ groups going off the deep end about the game for no reason at all other than it’ll make their kids see and use words in the dictionary that they’d rather them NOT know at all. Yeesh.

Anyway, go buy a copy when it hits stores on September 15!

Gallery: Scribblenauts Screens + Trailer

One of the games I’m REALLY psyched about this year is Warner Bros. Interactive’s Scribblenauts, the upcoming Nintendo DS game by the geniuses at 5TH Cell (Drawn to Life, Lock’s Quest) set to hit stores on September 16. In case you’ve not yet heard of it, this is absolutely one of the most crazily original games on any platform to date. Thanks to innovative gameplay that’s guaranteed to keep your brain and fingers on their toes as you input words which the game translates into usable on screen objects, I’m actually much more excited about my DS than I am my 360, PS3 and Wii combined.
