Malevolence Update: A Little Art Showcase (With A Side of Music)…

Slowly but surely, Malevolence: The Sword of Ahkranox is shaping up to be an indie RPG well worth tracking down when it’s completed, no matter how it ends up being released. If I’m not mistaken, if you happen to have a Steam account (or want one) you can still vote for the game to get onto Valve’s download service as part of the Steam Greenlight project, and I’d say go for it if you like supporting indie games, 30+ hard working folks from all over the world and classic first-person PC RPGs of a super high quality for such a smallish team. I say they should be up there with the best of them, as the game is looking better and better each time I see a new video or set of screen shots.

Random Unfinished Indie Game of the Week: fracture

Being a huge fan of the Shin Megami Tensei series, i got a huge smile on my face when I saw screens of Rhyme’s wonderful work in progress (with KreadEX and Karsuman doing the dev work), fracture over at RPGmaker.net. Even if you’re not a SMT fan (and why not?) the game is worth a look, especially if you just so happen to love old-school first person dungeon crawling in the Wizardry vein (but with a more modern twist).

In the tried and true MegaTen tradition, things are a bit cryptic in the beginning as your high school age party is introduced one by one as you walk though a series of brightly lit hallways, but once you get down to that first basement and the random battles begin, things get nice and hard for the unprepared. Try and rush too much through this one and you’ll be chewing on your keyboard, especially if you chose one of the harder difficulty settings.

Video Game Appreciation 101: System Shock! Into The Bins And Crates of Doom (Part 1)…

After a bit of survey-taking earlier Saturday, I decided on a whim to do a bit of cleaning as well as move some stuff around mostly to see just how many systems and such I have packed into the home office. All I’ll say is it’s definitely not a small amount. Anyway, below the jump are a few items from the collection. Nothing super-rare or anything like that, but a random selection of consoles, controllers and other gaming-related ephemera I’ve stocked up over the ages.

To the left, by the way, is my current “Systems Precarious” setup (code name: “Jenga!”): an Xbox (which plays imports and debug code), A Sanyo TRY-1 3DO (well, OK, it’s a bit rare in the US), A boring US PS2 with a HDD that’s faulty), a now non-working Xbox 360 (it died not too long after my Dragon’s Dogma review and I need to get another one) and a Japanese PS2. OK, usually it’s four consoles and not five, but I was playing The Earth Defense Forces 2 the other day just to get prepared for the copy of EDF 3 Portable I have coming in about two weeks. The PS3 and games for it in the living room, by the way (and thanks for asking). You can’t stack anything on top of it, as it’s an “ancient” launch model that’s still kicking. I think I need one of those “extreme” makeovers, gaming edition, as it’s a pretty dopey way to set stuff up.

Control Issues: Where The Wii U Could Really Slip Up At Launch…

No, I’m not talking about how well the new GamePad works or anything similar. I’m talking about the fact that Nintendo (of America, at least) isn’t releasing that innovative new controller as a standalone purchase on the same day as their new console. Wait, what? Yes, indeed… and I think this is some sort of wacky first for a new console launch.

Of course, a bit of official spin cycle counterpoint makes it all better, right?  Well, in my opinion… not really.  On the very different (but related) subject of why there weren’t dual controller games at the NYC press event and aren’t going to be additional GamePads on store shelves at launch, Nintendo of America President and CEO Reggie Fils-Amie noted in a great GamesIndustry.biz interview published yesterday:

 

” The reason you don’t see games with two GamePads [at this event] is the technical ability to make two GamePads work was delivered to publishers after they started this current round of development. So you’ll see those two GamePad experiences at a later date; when those games are coming, that’s when we’ll make a separate GamePad available.

 

Look at it this way: when we’re preparing for launch, I need to make consoles and I need to make GamePads, and I need to put them together in a box to sell at retail. And if I’m using my inventory assembling GamePads that don’t support any games in the marketplace, all I’m doing is reducing my available inventory to sell on launch day.”

 

Really? Argh. You had me at hello, Reggie (yep, I’ve already pre-ordered a Wii U). But then you hit me on the head and tried to toss me in the trunk after taking my wallet. Ouch. That’s not how it’s supposed to work with a new console – particularly one that’s so important and innovative…

Want More EDF TV Commercial Madness? OK!

Hey, Minoru Kawasaki? You are a really crazy, crazy man (in the best possible way, though). If this game DOES get a US release, I say D3 should just use these spots as some sort of viral campaign. I’m still considering ordering a copy of this from Japan just in case it’s not localized, but I’ll hold out until after TGS and see if D3Publihser here makes any sort of announcement. My Vita is smiling, that’s for sure…

EDF4 First Look Trailer: The Only Time Bugs Are Great In Gaming Is Here!

 

Holy Cats. I missed this EDF 4 trailer thanks to the CRUSH of Nintendo Wii U, New York Comic-Con news and other game/non-game related stuff jamming my inbox, but here you go. A nice peek at the new EDF game, which is looking SPECTACULAR in its retro way. Sandlot is blowing things up in a HUGE way here and even better, the game is coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013. As for a US release, it’s too early to tell, but I’d say D3Publisher of America would be IN-SANE to not be thinking about localizing this one. Hell, I’ll do all the voices in the English dub if I need to, D3 (although, that would send the game into Dynasty Warriors series levels of camp). Anyway, expect more to come during TGS this month, as I can’t possibly see D3Publisher not wanting to share more of this upcoming game. 2013 is looking better and better now. One thing, though: where’s the Wii U version?  That fancy new controller could make for a really fun multiplayer aspect to things is all I’m saying…

Dishonored Developer Documentary Part 3: Experience And Choice Make A Big Game Bigger…

As I’ve been saying for months now, DIshonored is going to blow you away on many fronts from the stylized visuals to the great gameplay to the amount of choice you have while playing. This latest video shows how to kill with skill and in quite a few ways. Amusingly enough, my two favorite upcoming titles that use player choice as key to the experience are this game and Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of 2 – you can’t get more opposite ends of the gaming spectrum than that, I’d say!

Nintendo Wii U Preview Event: About An Hour of Playing With Power

In case you missed it earlier, here you go, the press event in its entirety. Pull up a seat, put on that gamer grin and check out all the new software and services coming your way through the Wii U. There’s a lot of stuff left unanswered on a few fronts, but I’m betting even the nayest of the naysayers will be silenced as all is revealed over time. The only thing that concerns me is I understand that new touch screen GamePad won’t be sold separately. This means that Nintendo is eating a LOT of that cost for the console and yes, you’d better be REALLY careful with that new controller….

Resident Evil 6 “Cries for Help” TV Spot: Capcom Brings The Horror Home…

Speaking of kids and perilous situations, I love this TV spot, as it’s not only well shot and acted, it really makes me want to dive into the game and play more than the demo sections I had so much fun with. Granted, Capcom’s kitchen sink approach to creating Resident Evil 6 might not please some gamers who want ONE type of gameplay and the same old stuff as in the first four numbered games. Fortunately, I’m one of those people who got what the dev team was working at right away and saw that each segment of the game will be its own mini-epic rushing to collide with the other parts to create the biggest and possibly best new RE game this console cycle. I’ve been holding back impressions on the game because I want to dive into the entire disc and experience the stories as they’re meant to be played, so like many of you, I’m eager to see how it all meshes by the end credits. If anything, I’m betting it’s the most talked about game in the franchise’s history for all the content it’s bringing players new and old…
