Video Game Appreciation 101: MBA Online Learns You Some Nintendo Facts

Damned doomsayers and mobile evangelists on industry sites aside, it’s hard to argue against Nintendo’s massive successes in reinvigorating the video games industry on a few key occasions. I’d even go as far to say that EVERY mobile games success wouldn’t even be possible if it weren’t for the company’s proven track record with handheld dominance throughout the late 80’s to today. Granted, the company has made some bone-headed mistakes every so often, but they’ve always recovered and have forged on in terms of innovation and getting their fan base some of the most purely fun game experiences.

With the Wii U shipping out this week along with a healthy lineup of what’s looking like mostly strong titles, that long chart on the left from the eternally smart and busy folks over at MBA Online (you click it, it gets bigger! Whee!) shows that despite its ups and downs, Nintendo is going to be here for quite some time.

Batman: Arkam City Armored Edition Drops Into Retailers

For my money, it’s looks as if the Wii U has one of the more impressive launch.launch window lineups for a new console this generation (er, next generation? whatever – there are some strong titles coming between now and the end of the year). Yeah, yeah, yeah – your jaded self has already played this on the PS3, Xbox 360 or PC (or all three if you’re that obsessed), but given that this (and every other Wii U) game is made first and foremost for Nintendo-only fans who may have never laid a pinky on any previous version AND Rocksteady has gone above and beyond the call in not shoving a straightforward quick port out the door, this may be the definitive version of the game. Anyway, I say shut up and play it – if it’s good, it’ll silence the critics – if it’s bad, it’ll get them babbling doom stories about the systems like those overpaid analysts who don’t play games at all but spend too much time comparing everything to Apple’s success or claiming consoles are dead because too many people are playing mobile games or whatever.

On the other hand, if it’s BETTER than any of the previous versions, well… I say apologies are in order from the naysayers directly to WB, the developer and any gamers who were falling for the hate hype. Fair is indeed fair after all…

DmC Gets DLC Already (But You KNEW It Was Coming, Right?)…

Ah, poor Vergil! He gets relegated to DLC (which has pissed off the Capcom haters once again) rather than an unlockable bonus section, but hey, that sort of thing has been the law of the console land for a bit now. Unfortunately, those who can’t access the content thanks to no online accounts or willingness to pay more than the retail price for a game (for some people it’s still a poor economy) will need to hope the game sells well enough to net some sort of reissue down the road.

Hey, no offense here – I’m just asking that Q because I can’t think of anyone I know who’s a big Danica Patrick fan. That, or they aren’t watching her race or whatever she does when she’s not on the track. Ah well, I guess she needs to keep her “celebrity” sports gal thing going until that next GoDaddy ad. Then again, better to see her in a racing game than say, Brooke Burke, who was in that awfully goofy Burger King kart racer from a few years back. Well, at least THIS game looks as if it’s going to be a hell of a lot more fun…

Games I Finally Got Around To Completing #1: Red Dead Redemption

Well, THAT took a while, but it’s finally done, Undead Nightmare expansion (which I actually completed before the main game’s story)and all. Hey, I did say I like to take my time with games, so here’s a good example of this procrastination. Part of this was due to having so many open world games to go through, me going through them in order of least impressive to most (RDD is still stellar visually and highly replayable) and the fact that yup, I’m pretty awful at poker and there’s a LOT of it to play throughout the game. RDD’s poker games were giving me trouble because I hated to do the save/reload thing and wanted to always try and win fair and square without any cheating. Fortunately, I wised up (hey, it’s a game about the Old West – who the heck was a 100% honest poker player back then? Even the oldest Western films have poker cheats!) and decided to seek a bit of help from a few helpful sources from a friend who’s a pretty decent player to a nice and helpful site that showed me a few tricks I was too stubborn to pull off…

Whether you’re a gamer or not you probably know someone who’s a Legend of Zelda fan. Trust me, even if you don’t THINK you do, all you need to do is ask around and in under five minutes, it’s like Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon (And yeah, I have a weird connection to Mr. B as well – live in NYC long enough and that sort of thing happens). Anyway, if that person or person just so happens to be someone you like enough to want to gently drop a holiday or other occasion day present into their hot little hands, one (or more) STL Ocarinas should make them smile for years to come and then some…

EA & BioWare Keep The Mass Effect Flames Burning…

Nice. Not only is there going to be a collected set the trilogy coming for consoles and PC soon, the Wii U is getting what’s looking like a superb enhanced version of Mass Effect 3 with a new character, included DLC and a bunch of other cool features. Having played the series already, I’m still planning on looking into the Nintendo version thanks to the Gamepad functionality and being curious about how BioWare pulls off telling the story of the other two games in the series.

As always… we shall see…

TANK! TANK! TANK!: Is It The Wii U’s COMBAT? Mmmmm, Could Be…

As soon as I saw the first video for this Wii U port of the popular Japanese Namco Bandai arcade game, I thought about Atari’s classic pack-in that became an instant hit remembered by anyone who picked up a joystick back in the day. Of course, with the Wii U bringing a new controller into things, this simple-looking blast-fest could be the one game that has similar impact should the console take off into the stratosphere (as Nintendo hopes). As always, we shall see, but I think no matter how the system does, this is one of those games that will get a LOT of play long into the system’s life cycle. That said, fun games really don’t need silly-ass trailers like this. Just show the gameplay and I’m all in.

DMC “Home Truths” Vignette: Dante Gets Something Big To Swing

More nice cinematic joy from Ninja Theory’s upcoming reboot. It seems that the game has gotten a lot more respect over the months since Capcom has had playable versions at conventions and some decent coverage on other outlets, but of course, you can’t please everyone. Me, I’ve been on board the project from the beginning, as I trust Ninja Theory to make a compelling experience no matter what they do. Well, unless they do a kart racer. No one can make one of those interesting without getting compared right away to Mario Kart and its other successful derivatives…

World War Z Trailer: Zombie Apocalypse, Now?

OK, so I never read the acclaimed 2006 Max Brooks novel nor his 2003 Zombie Survival Guide, as hell, I’m too busy these days and know there are no such things as roving packs of undead (science is good for proving this). Also, I really think zombies are getting way too much exposure as the “go-to” thing for instant mass media interest (that said, The Walking Dead will always have my undivided attention).

Of course, given that the upcoming film deviates greatly form the book (according to an irate friend who recommended I read it and NOT see the film), I’m betting the film still does well at the box office because the masses who will line up like slow-moving zombies will be made up of those who haven’t read the source material. Anyway, Here’s the trailer for WWZ, which has Brad Pitt stepping into the suspense/horror genre once again after a bit too long away from it. Then again, he’s an actor you can’t typecast at all at this point in his career – you just show up and know you’ll get a solid performance from the guy.

Now, will I get off my lazy ass and go track down the book? Probably not (well, not yet). I still have too many games to play and plenty of other zombie-loaded entertainment here. But I may just go see the film and if I like it, well… maybe that book will get a read one day after all…
