OK, Too Much to Do, But Busy Is Good…

We’re still cleaning up from this stupid hurricane here (well, “we” meaning the city and surrounding areas) – I’m up late packing boxes to ship stuff out (some books I sold on eBay for not a lot, boo!) as the darn post office is FINALLY back in action (but closing a few hours early). I have an airport trip coming up this weekend that should be a fine and dandy adventure what with the MTA trying too hard to get some things back before they’re ready (and screwing up the JFK bus earlier this year so folks who can’t afford their STUPID Airtrain now need to walk about a good half-mile from the new bus stop all the way at the end of Terminal 5 to where they need to drop off or pick up people). Feh (and Double Feh!) for actually having the nerve to resume charging fares even though the damn service isn’t even back to 100% (the tunnels are STILL flooded).

But that’s another story for another time (or another blog, as this one’s about video games)… Oh, I’ll get around to the new banner tomorrow or on the weekend. It’ll probably be Halo 4 just because it’s on the way and probably going to be the “big” game this month.

Sandy, You Can’t Stop Me! Incoming Reviews (Delayed Slightly)

Hokay, in brief: Ragnarok Odyssey (BUY IT!), Dokuro (BUY IT!) Retro City Rampage (BUY IT!), Orgarhythm (BUY IT!) and Skylanders Giants (BUY IT!) are all incoming reviews this week and next along with King’s Bounty: Warriors of the North (I just got the code now and need to download this, but if it’s as solid as the last couple of KB games, it’s a buy) and some Holiday Gift Guide suggestions, I need to do quite a bit of updating. It’s been a bit hectic here what with all the stormy weather and such keeping me otherwise occupied, but expect a lot more to read as things sort of calm down. We got slapped around pretty badly by Sandy here in NYC, but the home office and games collection are just fine (as am I). Anyway, off to tackle some writing – back later!

Things to Do When Your Back Goes Out (Ouch!)

Let’s see now:

1.Wince a lot while trying to do normal stuff (Ouch!)
2.Try to stretch it out (Ouch!) so you can discover which old parts are the rusty ones (Ouch!)
3.Pop a few aspirin and get some rest for a bit because you’re probably better off not moving around so much.
4. Finish playing a game (EDF 3 Portable) but accidentally erase your save file and unlocked character in a bit of a tired and pain-fueled error (Ouch! Noooooooooo!)
5. Restart game, but quit after an hour or so because you really do need that rest.
6. Get up a bit later and watch some TV (Dexter, The Walking Dead/Talking Dead, Comic Book Men, Boardwalk Empire, Homeland), multitasking by playing more EDF 3P during breaks.
7. Pop a few more aspirin, Go back to bed, but play about an hour more until you fall asleep (as does your Vita).
8. Wake up, stay in bed and finish that game in record time, this time SAVING your progress (Whee!)
9. Get out of bed, realize you’re still in a bit of pain (Ouch!), pop another two aspirin and head back to bed.
10. After a few hours of twisting and turning (but not too much shouting, ha ha), get up and check your email to see you’ve got WAY too many messages (and some review codes which make you feel a LOT better).
11. Reply to a few messages and work out a few kinks in your back (Hey, this really feels a lot better than yesterday).
12. Update your site with this TMI post before heading off to start writing a few reviews.

Back in a bit – My back feels better now, but I’m still taking it a bit easy because it’s not at 100% yet.

October Already, Huh? Well, I’m Prepared (Sort Of)…

Heh. I was all snug in bed about to log a few Z’s and had to hop out to make sure I got in a quick Monday post as I spent a good chunk of Sunday afternoon updating a laptop and downloading a bunch of indie games to review, so I didn’t add any newer posts then.  Anyway, it’s getting chilly outside, but there’s a wealth of hot games coming this month. Dishonored (that’s where the costumed ladies above are from), XCOM Enemy Unknown, Assassin’s Creed III, Resident Evil 6, Ragnarok OdysseyEarth Defense Forces 3 Portable (well, it came out a few days ago in Japan, but my import copy will arrive in a few days), Medal of Honor Warfighter, Code of Princess, New Little King’s StoryNeed for Speed Most Wanted and so forth and so on (as in too many games to list here). As usual, i won’t be getting to all those games on or before day one because I like to take my time and play stuff at my leisure. But I’ll be nice and do a few capsule reviews for folks who might be on a fence about some titles. You can sit up there all night if you like, but trust me it gets painful after about an hour or so.

On second thought… get off that damn fence or you’ll bust it again! Good Night…

Ouch. I Think I Have A Full Body Cramp…

Oh, my eyeballs! my neck! My back! my ass!  I’ve been a wee bit busy scanning and uploading a ton of art (not mine) for a friend’s rather massive Powerpoint project, and digging up name and date corrections online, as I’m finding the book I’m using has a lot of errors. So I’m a bit behind on updating here as much as I’d like. Still, I did find time to get in chunk of Transformers: Fall of Cybertron for the PS3 (I’ll try and finish it up tomorrow for a review on Tuesday or Wednesday), plus two more cool RPGMaker games I’ll post about when I’m done with them. All that and I might have a tiny contest to run in a few days (stick around for that update if you like free stuff). OK, I’m going to bed, as I’ve been in front of the computer for the better part of (eek!) 15 hours (eek!!) working on assorted stuff. Back in a bit (creak, groan)

Bleh – I’m having some difficulties with Gmail not loading properly and Firefox crashing improperly, so I haven’t been able to update or respond to a few emails while I’ve been trying to figure out what’s going on. Anyway, I’m working on the issue as fast as I can, so I’m hoping to be back in a few hours with an actual meaningful post. As it is, I’m typing this and can’t read it at all, so let’s hope my spelling is OK…

If you’re possessing a good eye (two are even better), you may have noticed the URL change for the site. Yup, it’s paid for as of today and you can use that new addy or the old one. I’m still in the middle of a lot of other major and minor changes to the site, so stay tuned. Off to hold a fund-raiser or something so I can afford a few more WP updates! OK, I’ve been lagging behind in posting for a bit, but fear not – I’ll be adding more posts daily as I carve out a bit more free time (and play through the pile of games that’s steadily growing here)…

The Devil IS In The Details. You Just Need To Pay Attention To The Little Things…

So, I’m working on my Diablo III review and I had to stop to vent some of the steam coming from my ears here, so as not to spoil the review with too many complaints. I’m giving the game what I feel is a solid score based on ignoring a few things, as in despite the problems, there’s a great little game here. On the other hand, speaking for those who want to play the game by can’t. I can’t just slap the blinders on like a few other reviewers who have that perfect online setup and/or are of the “get over it” mentality that’s going to more or less kill gaming at some point when crap really goes bad (e.g., servers go down like the Hindenburg for an extended period and no one can even play the game).

Oh, I don’t hate Blizzard at all, folks. I’m just wondering how they didn’t see the launch day server crush coming. In addition to selling the game at retail and online, they gave DIII away for free to many World of Warcraft players, who happily took them up on the offer. As I’ve said elsewhere, an offline solo play mode (and LAN functionality for those that wanted it) would have been smart options for such a huge release, no matter what the company line is. Hell, I’d bet real money that the amount of day one bitching would have been about 90% less if people had something to play after waiting so long (either that 12 years of calendar time or those few hours on line at the midnight launches)… Continue reading

Geez. NOBODY “Owns” The Term “Indie.” So Shut It, Already, People….

Status: lightly annoyed, mostly amused, thank you much. Look, kids – Grow up, already. Independent, music, film and now games shouldn’t be pigeonholed by anyone even with the best intentions. If Notch wants to have a hissy fit about EA wanting to make money by selling independently made games it happens to publish as an “Indie” bundle, it’s his problem. Maybe he needs to play the games in the bundle first and not hate on EA for merely trying too hard to capture a part of the market that’s trending because hell, that’s what mega-corporations like EA do to make more money for themselves and their shareholders. Funny that I’m saying this, but that’s the way the system works… even at the “indie” level these days.

Of course, this whole “blame the big boys” argument that constantly turns into “they make too much money, so they suck!” has gotten old fast, especially considering SOME people who have become millionaires many times over based on their own “indie” games. There’s a lot of Kettle Black paint being sold at Home Depot, is all I’m saying…

No matter where you are in this food chain, you’re not “selling out” if your game becomes a big hit unless you somehow hate being recognized (and if you make games for free) and eventually, paid for the work you’re doing. Unless EA or any other major publisher starts calling its mainstream titles indie ( whether it be Mario, Madden, Half-Life, Call of Duty and so forth and so on), there’s nothing to see here – move along. Go play more games, co-opted “indie” or not and knock off the needless arguments over semantics, I say…

OK, that’s done. All of you The Elder Scrolls Online haters are next in my sights (tomorrow, though – I need some sleep!)

Brain Percolations In A Few Different Directions…

Hmmm… There’s been a lot of stuff going on around here outside my normal gaming sphere, so I’m going to be playing a bit of catch up over the next week or so in terms of previews and reviews. Oddly enough, my brain is generating art ideas lately in the midst of all this. Go figure. Anyway, off to rest for a few hours – back with some actual completed posts that make sense shortly…
