More Defiance Character Profiles? Sure, Why Not?

Meet Kenya, Irisa, Nolan, Datak, Stahma Tarr and a few more guys and gals you’ll want to see more of once this new show gets its hooks into you. I’ll check out the entire first season to see if I like what’s going on, but based on all the pre-production videos, teasers, clips and yes, all those gameplay videos, a play session and a few other things, I’ll say this is one worth checking out.

That and hell, it sure beats the crap out of another Sharktopus movie, that’s for damn sure… Continue reading

Defiance Ark Hunter Chronicles “Director’s Cut”: Turning The Pages Before A New Chapter Begins…

Of course, with two days to go, the Defiance YouTube page is absolutely *exploding!* with all sorts of neat character profiles from the show and more, which I’ll run in a bit. But I wanted to finish up this digital comic mini-series by running the “Director’s Cut” version. I’m usually not much of a fan of this style of animation (hey, I grew up watching those awful Marvel cartoons from the 60’s, so seeing not much has changed other than the talent is a lot better is kind of grimly depressing. Or really funny – I can’t decide). Anyway, Defiance premieres on Monday, April 15 at 9PM EST of syfy.

The Women Of Defiance: All The Ladies In The House Say (Whatever The Hell They Want To)…

Not just eyeball candy for the guys, these special ladies are a going to be a big part of what makes the upcoming show guaranteed to reel in viewers of both sexes who like strong female characters who get to go toe to toe on a few levels with the men in their brave new world. It should be quite intriguing to see how well this cast does over time across the viewership, as there are a lot of interesting personalities the cast has to work with and I’m sure the writing team will have a hard time if they need to get rid of any of these characters in an upcoming storyline. As always, we shall see…

Three More Game of Thrones-Related Videos (But You Won’t Mind At All, Right?)

I thought not. Still, it’s been pretty amusing to listen to some people who don’t like the show because it’s “too _____ (fill in the blank)” and find out they’ve never read the books or watched more than a single episode or part of an episode before ducking out. Or worse, they always operate in Prudish Mode when it comes to their entertainment options. Color yourself No Fun Blue (it’s that crayon you never use in the big box) and put a sheet over your head, I say. Zzzzzz.

In actuality, I’ve only skimmed through one book a friend lent me before giving it back  because I didn’t want to become completely tied to the printed work like some fans who pick at the show for not following events EXACTLY as written. The Walking Dead also has some fans who get nuts about continuity, but as I’ve said before, in both cases, MORE story is always a good thing. All action all the time (or too much of it in overkill mode) gets mind-numbing fast (see Starz’ Spartacus series for a good example).

Yeah, you’re entitled to an opinion around these parts, but unless you’re running for office, you’re not entitled to letting your brain do less work than it needs to, I say. A little depth and variety goes a long way (and not only in what you watch on TV, either).

Game of Thrones Season 3 Episode 2 Recap: Not Everyone Missed (Or Was Missed, Ouch)…

In case you missed the last episode, well… you still missed it. This recap is only a minute and a half long and poking you with all sorts of pointy things so you’ll remember next Sunday. of course, having HBO on Demand helps out a lot with playing catch with the assorted residents and denizens of Winterfell as the plot twists and turns like a drunken snake trying to find its way out of someone’s stomach. How did that snake get in there anyway? Oh, you probably don’t want to know, but I’m sure it’s the reason it’s drunk. Anyway, set your Clocky or Tocky and don’t miss a minute of the next episode. Or else I’ll need to come back here and write a really terrible poem or something…

Defiance: Preaching to the Converted Always Works Pretty Well…

So, next Monday is the “Big One” (Part Two) for Trion Worlds, syfy and any fans of the game as well as soon to be fans of this show. All signs point to it doing well, but it’s the ridiculously fickle nature of how viewership naturally swells and dips that can spell doom for any show, no matter how well done. Personally, I say ANY show should get at least a season the breath and find a fan base, but TV, movies and games work under the most unrealistic of expectations all too often. For my money (and I’m a cheap bastard), Defiance really does look like it’s got longevity going for it as far as the dedication to the project from its creators, cast and crew. Let’s see if the viewers agree and keep those ratings up, as it would be a shame to see all that time and money go down the drain after a single season…

Game of Thrones Season 3, Episode 3 Teaser: Things Get Sticky…

Well, talk about a surprise ending to this week’s show. I kind of figured it would be a win or lose sword fight, but nope. Hmmm… I guess I now need to go find some some seat belts for the chair in the living room here, as it looks like things are about to get pretty damn bumpy for a few of the principals in next week’s episode. As I’ve said before, I don’t even get attached to any of these characters too much, as it’s basically the writers rolling their fates and we viewers sitting there getting our strings pulled. This arrangement… it works quite well, doesn’t it? Well, unless they kill off everyone in the last episode due to a meteorite crashing into the planet, that is…

Defiance “Great Place” Trailer+: Brave New Perspective…

So, DEFIANCE is up and running mostly fine on multiple platforms (and with some of the usual MMO launch issues that settle out after a patch or two) and people seem to be playing and enjoying it, but it still looks as if many are waiting for the show to start up before taking that plunge.

I’d gather that there’s still some confusion about this being a “license” when in fact, the game and show were created simultaneously and meant to bounce off of each other in a way that’s new to both mediums. That’s not hard at all to wrap your head around, but we’re in the age of absolute skepticism about the wrong things, especially when there’s no big explanations necessary other than what you “get” once you open your eyes and look and/or pick up a controller and play.

Between the game, show and additional content such as the Ark Hunter Chronicles that add to the lore, it’s clear that DEFIANCE has been well planned and so far, executed to break new ground across the board in the TV and game space. Now, it only needs MORE people willing to see what it’s all about and hop into both the show and game with equal relish and respect for the team’s brave new worlds…

Game of Thrones Season 3 Recap (1): Lessons Learned On A Few Fronts…

Among other things, let’s see now:

  • Lannisters always pay their debts (unless they’re to other Lannisters)
  • You CAN survive a green magic hellfire explosion if you land on some big rock in the sea that saves your life (ouch.)
  • Mothers DO make mistakes that make for nice plot kicks in the ass
  • Undead-looking armies seem to be REALLY bad at killing slow, fat guys.
  • The new people you meet are the same as the old people you meet… just newer
  • And most importantly, “Men don’t need nipples” (ouch!)

Episode 2 is Sunday. If you don’t have HBO yet, you’re welcome (sorry for the spoilers, thought)…

Game of Thrones Season 2 DVD/Blu-Ray: In Case You Missed It, Don’t Duck This Time…

Thankfully, the fine folks at HBO who get these season sets out KNOW that not everyone likes streaming (or CAN stream) shows they missed, has a DVR or hell, just doesn’t have HBO at home for whatever reason. So yes indeed, if that’s YOU and you’re not watching Season 3 just yet, here you go. Granted, everyone else is laughing at you at this moment, but not too loudly. You’ve seen Season 1 already and KNOW where the pointy end goes… Poke, poke. *Ouch!* Poke, poke, poke… *Ouch, ouch!!*… OK, OK – I wasn’t laughing!
