You know, when I saw this trailer to Transcendence I actually laughed out loud because it reminded me of all those “cyberpunk” themed TV shows and films from the 90’s that for the most part didn’t so anything right other than be expensive and really weird unintentional sci-fi comedies. Sure, I know these movies have their followings and fans who groove on the cornball digital effects and “futuristic” scenarios (some by popular authors!), but come on, now. They just haven’t held up all that well even if you DO like them so much you gloss over their obvious flaws. Anyway, this flick seems to be going for a mix of The Lawnmower Man and War Games with a few other bits wired in for good measure and yeah, a “bald” Johnny Depp with wires sticking out of his head makes for a funky future Frankenstein’s monster for sure. Will it be a hit, a miss or a camp classic cable flick? We shall see, people… we shall see…

Virtuix Omni: Space Invaders For The New VR Horsey Set…
With all the fuss and happy-happy fury about virtual reality gaming seemingly becoming an ACTUAL reality sooner than later (again, but in a few smaller, lighter and thankfully less expensive formats), you know someone had to take things to an even more intensive level of immersion. Enter the folks at Virtuix Omni and their rather innnnterersting peripheral that’s going to get your ass up of its ass and make you play those 3D games in a whole new way. Unlike some of those first VR terminals of the 1990’s where you stood and basically turned in place with your arm out, the Omni Natural Motion Interface will get you a workout you can’t believe and probably will get hooked on once your body heals from the first few days of wondering why the hell you’re REALLY running when you usually sit down to play that favorite shooter, action game or open-world RPG… Continue reading
Gamescom 2012: EA Press Conference (Put Up Your Feet So Your Socks Can Fly Off Safely)
OK, so I’m feeling lazy today, so you kids get to watch a movie instead of me telling you a story. Whee! Anyway, lots of fun stuff here to ogle, so I’ll shut up and let you get to the ogling. Got that popcorn and drink handy? Is the dog nearby to get your socks (or the cat to chase and play with them) when they fly off? All comfy now? If you’re wearing shoes, take them off NOW, or else you may hit your pet with them, which isn’t a good thing for either of you. OK…. NOW you’re ready! Enjoy!
EA Going Digital: Both Feet In, Head First (And Maybe Not Such A Great Idea To Some)…
Hmmm. Well, at least they’re hiring, right? However, as noble as their intentions are, I can see a ton of issues with an all-digital platform that make it less a good move and more of a high-risk doom scenario under the right circumstances. But I’ll let you guys and gals discuss it amongst yourselves. Personally, I really LIKE the security of having a physical product as it’s something I can play offline and without relying on giving up personal information. Hell, given the rather crappy security ALL across the internet where a month can’t go by without some major information breach/theft issue making the news, it’s hard for me to trust ANY digital-only service with my personal data. I think we’re sacrificing security for convenience, which is a hell of a lot more dangerous in the long run, even if we’re assured that our data is “safe”. I have the feeling that there’s an anti-EA crowd of n’er do wells just waiting to poke holes in the company’s digital ship as soon as it sails. But we’ll see, I guess…
Google’s “Project Glass”: If Thine Eye Offend Thee (And How)…
Hmmm… As soon as I saw this video, I nearly fell over laughing. Oh, SURE, it looks cool and hip and fresh and whatever the kids all say these days. My choice of slang here would be “Dope?” Wait. It’s currently a NEAR TRANSPARENT screen that’s in front of your eyes while you’re walking down the street? Think about that for a minute (it should take a LOT less time, but I’m feeling generous today)… Er, does anyone still use “dope” as slang anymore for cool stuff? Can I get a “dope” here? (Heeeeeeey, dope!)… Er, no dope? OK, let’s try this: Hey all you drooling hipsters and twittering techies… here’s another cool video to watch (it’s dope!):
In other words, this is an eternally DUMB idea that’s going to do more harm than good, I say… Continue reading
