Game of Thrones S4: A Week Away, So Here Comes The Onslaught…

Yeah, I’m too busy here to keep up with posting all those ads and teasers and such, but you don’t have to hunt far or wide to get hit upside the head with a Game of Thrones promo on TV, the internet or a few other places. It’s WAR, I tells ya, but I’m immune to the promo bombardment because I watch what I like, not what some network tells me to like. Thankfully, GoT has been pretty killer from that beginning and looks as if it’s not going to let up one bit. One more week, people… just one more week…

Game of Thrones S4 Trailers: “Awaken”, “All Men”… Things Are About To Get Rough…

Does ANYONE actually like Cersei Lannister? The great Lena Headey has been doing such an excellent job playing this twisted woman that I know of a few people who have thrown stuff at their televisions when she’s onscreen. Now, I don’t think they’re breaking their televisions (as far as I can tell), but I bet some poor throw pillows are pissed off that they’re called what they’re called. I just find myself scowling or making faces at my TV because it’s old and sensitive (like me!) and it would cry if i hit it with anything harder than a paper towel.

As for The Imp? Well we ALL stand behind him, right? Well, you kind of HAVE to stand behind Tyrion or else. Why? Silly you. If you’re standing in front of him, there’s a good chance you’ll get pushed off something high or pig-stuck in the rear end with something pointy. So yeah, behind the man it is… and well off to the side just in case someone else tries to kill him. Yeah, better safe than sorry, people…

Game of Thrones S4 Trailer #4: The “Devil” Is In The Details…

Getting warmer in here, isn’t it? Not because it’s spring, mind you (hell, next week we’re supposed to get a little late surprise from winter’s dying grasp, it seems), but because it’s alllllmost time for Season 4 of Game of Thrones to kick off. I’m still avoiding spoilers, but man was I ticked off to hear that a bunch of fans got to see the season premiere this week (boo!) and blab all about how lucky they were. Gee thanks, HBO. Oh well. One day they’ll take notice of me and send me an invite (name of my blog aside that SCREAMS that I might not be interested, har har)…

Game of Thrones S4 Trailer #3: They’re NOT “Secrets” If Everyone Knows Them, You Know…

Ah, as usual things are getting interesting out Westeros way and yup, you can expect things to go way up north and way down south for all the houses this season. Still, suspense is the name of the game on this show and I’m only expecting it to deliver the goods on a weekly basis. Granted, topping that Red Wedding will be tricky, but there’s a big wedding this time that’s probably going to have even worse repercussions on a few levels (well, over time). Anyway, April 6 is the big day if you’re not a binge-watching fool who wants to miss out just so you can overdose on the sofa with a box of bonbons and a tablet or phone app in your lap to keep you distracted and still missing out. Eh, “Do you”, as the old saying goes…

Game of Thrones Season 3 Recap. A Little Real History to Go With The Fake One…

Ah, if only actual politics were as simple as letting loose your dragons on some fool who thought he’d get the better of you or getting all stabby-stabby with enemies you lure into a formerly blissful wedding celebration. Nope, I don’t think we’re headed for World War III anytime soon, but the dicey situation between a few countries these past few months have a nasty parallel to the years 1936-39 if you poke through the history books. Of course, it’s hard to gauge the future based on current actions, but if the past is any indication, a lot of us will be turning to shows like GoT for some time off from real world issues. Let’s also hope that someone shows Mr. Putin some of those history books so he sees that working your way to the top over the bodies of others means the bottom rushes up faster at some point to meet you.

Random Film of the Week(end), Too: The Night Digger (The Road Builder)

(Thanks, Night of the Trailers!)

the night diggerI used to get The Night Digger and The Night Visitor confused when I was younger, but that’s since been rectified (and nope, I’ve been fortunate enough to NOT confuse any of them with The Night Porter). Both films are from 1971 and bother are psychological thrillers, with the former film being the more “horror” oriented one on a few fronts. However, neither is a straight up slasher flick and both have elements that make them superior to typical genre entries.

Here, Patricia Neal gives a powerful performance as Maura Prince, a woman living with and caring for her blind mother Edith (Pamela Brown), with both women falling prey to the charms of the handsome young Billy (Nicholas Clay) who rides up one day on his sleek motorbike and asks for a job. He’s not just good with his tools, folks… he’s also a violent sex criminal and murderer who has a handy way of disposing of his victims. In a bizarre twist (one of a few the film socks you with), the film turns into a very strange love story where you may find yourself rooting for that emotion to take hold and win over all, but there’s that air of inevitability and gloom thanks to the plot turning as it does and a beautiful and haunting Bernard Herrmann score that will raise a few hackles (if you haven’t gone and shaved them off like the kids do with their hair in certain spots, ewww)…

Random Film of the Week(end): The Night Visitor

(Thanks, vivendientertainment!)

the night visitorAs a child, the poster to Laslo Benedek’s The Night Visitor used to scare the heck out of me, but when I finally saw the film after it popped up on TV a few years later, I wasn’t frightened all that much. Granted, it took a few more viewings as I got older to really appreciate what’s here and it’s a nifty little thriller worth tracking down (it’s been out of print for years on DVD). While it’s not the best nor most coherent suspense flick out there (calling it a “horror” movie is a bit of a mistake), the casting is solid (Liv Ullman, Max von Sydow, Trevor Howard, Per Oscarsson), the script has its moments and you may even get a surprise or three as this creepy little tale plays out.

Von Sydow plays Salem, a rather crafty resident of a supposed “escape proof” mental asylum who escapes a few times in order to exact some extended revenge on his sister (Ullman) and her husband (Oscarsson). Why? Well, not just because he’s nuts plus tax, kids. Salem was set up for a brutal murder by his brother-in-law and he’s not having the time of his life in that freezing hellhole. Of course, the fact that each time he escapes he’s in his underwear (Why? You’ll see, you’ll see) and he manages to make it back before its noticed he’s missing keeps the film going for a while as a local inspector (Howard) tries to find out what’s going on when some new murders start happening…

Game of Thrones “Artisan Piece” Vignettes: Making Westeros As Lovely And Deadly As Ever…

I haven’t been keeping up with all these behind the scenes videos on Season Four, but I may as well post the two that jumped out at me thanks to someone pointing me to them earlier. I’m gathering all these locations around the world that get used on the show make great tourist dollar traps afterwards for those who can afford the vacation and maybe an arrow to the knee from some pissed of local who’s tired of loud crowds tromping through their back yards cooing and pointing at every tree, rock and body of water that LOOKS as if it’s straight from the show.

Yeah, that can get tiring for sure. On the other hand, you KNOW there’s that ONE guy or gal who’s making a killing being some sort of unofficial “official” go-to person who’s a font of knowledge about the areas and histories of everything they lay an eyeball on. Of course, there’s a good chance they’re lying through their teeth about half the stuff they’re bending your willing ear over. But that’s a good thing if you end up falling for their tall tales, correct? After all, you wouldn’t be a fantasy fan if you weren’t a sucker for a tale told well, right? Yeah, you know that’s true…

Game of Thrones S4 Trailer #2: Vengeance (Is Mine, And Yours, And Yours)…

The clock is ticking away as Season 4 is headed to HBO and fans prepare their brains and bodies for what’s coming. I can’t keep more than one eye open at the moment thanks to my long day, so I’ll just let out a squeaky “Yaaay!” from the back of the room and fall over in a heap to sleep. Good night, people. I’ll be back and in better shape tomorrow… I think. Zzzzzz.

Game of Thrones Fire & Ice Show: Big Teases In A Short Time…

Ha. I actually forgot this extended Season 4 teaser was on tonight, but as noted, I hadn’t planned on watching it anyway because I prefer to go into the show cold (and will, what with winter still in full effect here as well as in the upcoming season). Nope, I still haven’t watched this, but I’m posting it for your enjoyment. Eh, I’ll catch it On Demand soon enough if I want to, as it’ll always be there. Ah, the things I do for you, dear reader. Now, then – let’s tuck you in (tuck, tuck, tuck), here’s a smooch to the forehead (*smack!*) and there, you’re allllll ready to go to sleep. Gooood Niiiiight. Whaddya mean it’s ONLY 10:25? When I was your age, I was in bed and out like a busted light by 11! Well, OK… not really…
