Phantasy Star Online 2 Headed Westward (Hopefully, With Some Sort Of Offline Mode)

As happy and grateful as I am that Sega is wisely getting PSO 2 to North America next year, it WOULD be really nice to have some sort of offline mode for those of us who don’t give a hoot about MMOs, live in areas with no or spotty broadband connections or hell, just like to play our games solo with no intrusive DRM and data mining going on behind the scenes.  Of course, no one listens to an old coot like me anymore, so I guess I won’t offer any more suggestions about this sort of thing. THAT said, the Phantasy Star legacy demands that there be a game that’s playable for us lone wolf types. Hopefully, someone at Sega somewhere in the world has realized the same thing and does something to honor the series long history instead of just shoving yet another lovely-looking MMO out the door and hoping we all jump on board with nostalgic blinders on.

Gallery: US Sega CD/Sega Saturn Library

Or more precisely, what’s left of both after the great “I Need Money!” sell-off of a few years back. The three PAL Saturn titles I think I posted already last year, but I’m too lazy to go look up something on my own website (wow, that’s bad!)…

Anyway, While I do miss the stuff that’s gone and harder to find (and even more insanely expensive these days), I have my fingers crossed that one of these days, Sega will find a way to get some of their first-party Saturn games back into gamers’ hands in SOME reasonable manner. Oh yeah, I added in a picture of my Mega mouse just to show that the thing actually existed and yup, works fine for the games that use it. The disc-only games (which I normally don’t collect) came in a CD wallet that was part of a giant box of stuff I traded for a long time ago. All of the games worked fine, but some needed a lot of cleaning (and a bit of Perma-Spin action – that stuff is awesome!).

Thanks, Sega!: NiGHTS into dreams… Makes A Welcome Return (Which IS Excellent, But…)

Hey, Sega! Longtime supporter from the arcades to Dreamcast and beyond here. While I’m loving that you’re finally getting NiGHTS onto XBLA, PSN and PC soon enough, I’m also one of those crazy people that has the original game in it’s box with the analog controller, the Christmas NiGHTS disc (I have one each here for the US, Japanese and UK Saturn), the excellent Wii follow up and yes, that means I’ve played the game to death and will do so once more when this HD u[date hits. That said (dot, dot, dot)

Not to be a pest (again), but I’m just wondering when we’ll start seeing some of those other first-party Saturn titles get the same HD or remake love. The Panzer Dragoon series, Shining Force III (including all the content that stayed in Japan), Burning Rangers, stuff like that? It’s not as if I’m screaming about BUG! or Clockwork Knight not getting HD remakes here (you get what, one email a month about those, right?). I’m just a little bit concerned about Sega of America ignoring some of its best games on a console that’s been HUGELY underrepresented since it died. That and while they may not have sold in spectacular numbers on the Saturn, the games I listed might do even better today if the time was taken to bring them to gamers in the best possible manner.

Hell, I’d bet a Panzer Dragoon Complete Box Kickstarter would see money raining from the heavens…

Plush Sega Genesis! Now, That’s A True Sega Fan At Work…

This is REALLY cool, isn’t it? And nope, I didn’t make this at all – I’m just re-posting a video from Sega’s YouTube channel. The only thing I’ve ever made for Sega was TROUBLE, thanks to all my requests for obvious remakes or reboots that have never been done. To wit: Hey, Sega! Where the heck is Panzer Dragoon BOX (with all the games redone in HD), Shining Force III: Complete (same HD deal, with ALL three chapters AND that Premium Disc Content), Some sort of Sega Saturn Collection and hell, while we’re at it an ultimate Arcade/Home Collection that features as many Sega arcade and home games as can fit on a Blu-Ray? I want Thunderground, Astron Belt, SubRoc, Alien III: The Gun, Time Traveler and other games long forgotten (and in some cases NEVER seen on any previous Sega collections). You guys HAVE the history, so USE IT, grrrr! Get on it, already!

See, I’m nothing but trouble. And yeah, I had to rewrite this post because of a glitch that had the Journey post zap the original one I made into the ether. Oops! Anyway, as I said in that post, I can only offer Sega my advice and some tough love because I can’t sew or knit for shit and sending baked goods in the mail is a BIG no-no unless you’re a reputable company shipping food that’s guaranteed not to make anyone sick…

Hey Wikipedia! Get Your Facts Stra… Oh, Nevermind…

For the record, Oh, mighty but overrated and often unreliable source of “information” that too many people rely on for “facts”: THIS adventure game/RPG hybrid on the left is NOT at all THIS pretty solid port of a great PC-Engine shooter on the right. Two different games, two different developers and hell, two different genres if you really want to get overly fussy about it. Someone needs to fix this (and more, as I’d bet this is’t the ONLY thing on that site with a lousy bit of lazy behind it…

You’re NOT Going To The Olympics, So You May As Well See What You’re Missing (Sort Of)…

Nope, I’m not going to London either, but thanks to Sega, we all get to see these flybys from their upcoming London 2012 – The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games, coming to consoles and PC soon enough. Of course, I don’t think I’ve watched an entire Olympics since Mamo Walde won the Marathon. Then again, that was what, 1968? I forget. Anyway, Sega produced a few of these slick trailers (which look really spectacular), but I’m just posting these two, as like you, I’m not planning to watch (or more precisely, planning to MISS) this year’s Games. I might track the game down at some point, but it’s not too likely, as sports games and I don’t get along much unless there are explosions and maybe some cars bumping into each other. Not both at the same time, though. That wouldn’t be much of a sport, right?

E3 2012: Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed: One If By Land, Two If By Sea, Three If By Air…

While it’s not the first arcade-style racing game with transforming cars, it’s hard not to see the lineup of rides here and not want to fall over something running to grab a controller and get some fast track action in. I’m still confused as to exactly what to call this, as Sega keeps leaving out the SEGA in the title, but folks who’ve posted the video have put it back in (where it needs to be). I guess we’ll all need to see what the official word is, but as a Sega supporter since before a lot of you were born, I’m all for promoting that world famous name whenever possible. Go, SEGA!

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Trailer: Shouldn’t There Be a SEGA In There Somewhere?

I really like the idea of transforming vehicles (even though it’s been done before in games since the Spy Hunter days), the brief gameplay shown here looks great and the first game was a ton of fun. But what’s up the the total lack of Sega in the title this time out? Hopefully it’s a misprint, or perhaps we’ll be seeing some non-Sega All-Stars in this follow up? Whatever happens, I’m hoping to see Sega be a bit prouder of itself despite a bumpy year so far. Go, Sega!

Blaze’s GameGadget Is REALLY Cool. I Want One (You Probably Should Too)…

Let’s see now: a discounted price PLUS 30 classic Sega Genesis/Mega Drive titles FREE with the unit if you grab one before April 30, 2012, PLUS it’s packed with some excellent features AND the potential to beat up (a tiny bit) on Apple’s massive success? OK, I’m in. Hmmm. I recently got a Vita and even it’s a little jealous of this handheld. even though Blaze’s slick little device isn’t as “cutting edge” in design, I’m actually looking into acquiring one for the collection at some point.  Anyway, the GameGadget site is live, so go check it out and GET ONEso you can thumb your nose at the mega-corps with one hand AND get to play some great games with the other. Me, I’m stocking up the pennies slowly, so this will get added into the collection at some point.

Sega Bass Fishing of the Dead: Well, It SHOULD Be A Real Game…

Ah, Sega, Sega, Sega… don’t make some cranky Dreamcast fans go nuts this weekend! Still, You KNOW they would have fallen harder and FAST if it were an “official” Shenmue III announcement. Er, then again, maybe that would have been a really terrible prank to yank. You guys and gals don’t want a horde of VERY pissed off torch-carrying gamers storming the Sega offices on a Sunday morning. They’d go and do it, too…
