And sooner than you think, although paradoxically a wee bit late for some who wanted it to arrive last year. Anyway, Dragon’s Dogma on PS3 and Xbox 360 was a great surprise hit for Capcom back in 2012, and less than a year later the Dark Arisen expansion added all-new content on a disc or as DLC that also changed up the main game with a few fixes. PC gamers have been screaming to the skies for Capcom to get this one-two punch of fantasy action/RPG greatness out on Windows and those wishes will be granted come January 2016.

Unconventional Games of The Year Choices Incoming. You’ve Been Warned.
(Thanks, movieclips!)
As some of you may know, I hate making “best of” lists, as it’s always a case of what one DIDN’T experience not making the cut almost always being as good or (or better) than what was chosen. That goes double for public choice where popular seems to outstrip good by a few leagues. That said, if you kidnapped me, tied me to a couch with a bunch of random strangers and submitted them to some rather strange blood testing to see who was infected with an alien virus, I’d fess up beforehand that yes, I’m one of those Things just because I hate me the hell out of needles and sharp objects (unless I’m in the kitchen cutting up stuff to cook). I’d also probably admit that out of all the games I’ve played this year, I probably put MORE time into a few than most did because I liked them a lot more than most did. Okay, that and my backlog is insane and I no longer review too many games in a “speed to the finish!” manner, as that’s how you miss some important stuff… Continue reading
Review: Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen
Platform: PlayStation 3 (also on Xbox 360)
Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
# of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: M (Mature)
Score: A-
My favorite fantasy game (as well as the one that got played the most) of 2012 was Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma thanks to the level of immersion it offered as a single player experience, the massive land of Gransys and its assorted dangers above and below ground, tons of hidden secrets and unique Pawn system. It was impossible for me to not spend at least two to three hours at a minimum exploring outside the main quest, poking about in areas and often running like hell from some high-level monsters just to beef up my character a few more levels and hire some more powerful pawns just to drop back in and kick that big boss and his minions around. Of course, there was that cranky, level-shifting Ur-Dragon to give me fits a few times until it was able to be defeated multiple times, coughing up some cool treasure, but that’s a book I can write some other time.
Anyway, this year, we get a wonderful expansion, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen that packs in the original game with some nice fixes and an all new massive underground dungeon and rewards geared for high-level players only. Make that high-level players with a ton of patience willing to go through hell before they reach high water, as DD:DA is even more brutal than the original, but in a good way…

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen Launch Trailer: Oh, I’ll Be Here For A While, Folks…
As I predicted, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is so far, all I could have asked for and then some. The bonuses for converting that save file over are awesome, the MASSIVE new island/underground area is capital “D” Deadly (plus tax!) and overall, I’m predicting those who aren’t whining about the budget price point because they wanted this to be CHEAPER as stand-alone DLC (even though it has a tweaked version of the original game for FREE on that disc – or second disc if you own an Xbox 360) will be having a grand old time in Gransys’ new underworld. Hopefully, I can come up for air this weekend with a review. I’ll shoot for that, but don’t hold me to it because as with th original, there are WAY too many diversions in the game world to simply blow through this one in a few days…
New Arrival: Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen Pops In To Destroy My Productivity…
Well, there goes the rest of the week, folks. I walk in from working on a few posts and there’s a copy of Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen waiting for me. Nice. Hmmm… I see from the included Fact Sheet that loading up that old save I have will net me a cool 100,000 Rift Points, a nice set of gear and some other fun stuff, so I’m going to have to NOT pass up that chance to score all those goodies and see what this “expansion” packs on that disc. I say “expansion” because it’s a lot more than a simple add-on and nope, you don’t need the first game at all to play this one.
That’s right, folks – for a mere $39.99, you get the FULL version of the original game on the same disc and that new content doesn’t look at all as if it’s going to be a mere ten-hour romp in the caves. Back with an update (in the form of a review) probably on the weekend. I still need to get my daily post count in, so I can’t get TOO sidetracked. On the other hand, I may limit myself to five or so posts per day until I get this game tackled. We shall see…
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen Enemies (2): Dying Just Got A Lot More Painfully Interesting…
Just watching this latest Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen gameplay trailer makes me say “Ouch!” because I know some of these new creatures will be a pain to take down quickly. But as with the first game, it’s a learning experience when you encounter a new enemy in this game world. Check out its weaknesses, go at it with your best skills and make sure your pawns are up to speed. Hmmm… Now I’m feeling the need to play through the first game again… but with all the work I need to get done, that’s not going to happen at all. Unless someone creates time travel before Dark Arisen hits retail for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on April 23, 2013… which isn’t so far away at all. Yaaaah! The pain of having too darn many games to play, think of playing (or replaying). Well, there are far worse things to be worried about in the real world, of course…
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen Enemies Video: Eight Million (More) Ways To Die…
Gran Soren just got a whole lot more dangerous. Seriously. Granted, it already WAS pretty deadly as it was teeming with all creatures great and small wanting to grind your party’s bones to make their bread (or a tasty filling for that bread), but the mad wizards at Capcom have worked in plenty of new not so wee beasties guaranteed to send you into a frenzy of running away if you’re too weak a character to handle it. On the other hand, if you’ve got the buff stuff and no bluff, you can tough it to those creatures rough until they’d had more than enough. Yeah, I liked Basil Wolverton’s bizarre comics as a kid, so sue me. Or go track down some of his freaky funnies.
Anyway, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen (coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360 on April 23, 2013) brings you the COMPLETE original game, ALL the DLC packs AND an entirely new adventure all for a measly $40. This means your friends who missed out can hop in and start off and see what’s what, while YOU, dear reader (well, if you played the original) can upload your save files and beat up on those bruisers with relish. Well, the relish they were going to slather all over that bread they were going to get to baking…
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen: Mystic Knights Mean Painful Daze For Gran Soren’s Monsters…
A ha ha ha, I can come up with the proper funny puns now, can’t I? “NO”?!! Eh, what do YOU know anyway. Hey, as long as I make MYSELF laugh, that’s good enough for me. Foo. Anyway, another week, another cool class video from the upcoming expansion that builds on the already massive game and adds a bunch of cool new content. Getting not only this but the complete original game on a single disc (or download) for a mere $39.99 is a great deal whether you’ve played the game already or not. As usual, the big, fat elephant shaped gorilla in the room here is finding time to play this even bigger game. Someone will one day invent a time machine that works properly. The one I have just makes toast and shocks me when I try to stick a fork in to take it out. Hey, YOU try getting a slice of bread out of a temporal field while it’s still active. Not an easy thing to do, folks… Well, a wooden fork would help a lot, but that’s what I’m trying to go back in time first to get, silly…
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen Sorcerer Gameplay: Now, That’s How You Spell Trouble!
Who said magic-users were “bad” go-to characters in RPGs? As you can see in this latest trailer for Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, a good Sorcerer is indeed a major force to be reckoned with. A little “Disco Inferno” or “Lightning Strikes” would make this video even better, I say. Hey, if you played the original game, you know that rockin’ title song got stuck in your head for a few weeks. Anyway, keep this game on your radar, folks – I’m predicting another “sleeper” of truly epic proportions that just may beat out upcoming next-generation launch titles for sheer longevity and replay value. April 23, 2013 (April 26 in Europe) is only a short time away… are you ready? Those ridiculously tough and massive bosses aren’t going to kill themselves, you know…
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen Enemies Trailer: Treasure Hunting Just Got A Lot Tougher…
Capcom is making sure Dragon’s Dogma fans will be coming back for more and staying put in the land of Gransys for even longer, primarily trying to survive some of these new enemy types. Fire breathing lizards, A gigantic reaper who needs to get his sheet suit cleaned, a few giants, and probably worst of all, monsters in some treasure chests. Talk about a jerk-in-the-box! All you wanted was a nice sack of gold or a new sword or something nice… but, nooooo. You get a mutant thing popping out of that chest and chewing on your head instead of that shiny prize. Well, it’ll sure keep many DD players on their toes, that’s for sure. April 23rd (April 26th in Europe) isn’t really that far away if you think about it. That’s plenty of time to go through the original game before this expansion OR you can wait and pick up Dark Arisen at retail which will have the complete game and expansion on a single disc for a mere $39.99… It’s coin flip time, I guess, but the good thing is if you have a save file from the original game you can transfer it over and not have to replay from the beginning (unless you REALLY want to and have that kind of free time on your hands).
