Star Trek The Video Game – Making the Game Part 2: All Gorn, No Corn…

Another behind the scenes look at Digital Extremes’ upcoming Star Trek game, this time featuring a peek at the redesigned Gorn. I like the faster, meaner versions here over the one from that classic Trek episode, “Arena” (itself based on a great sci-fi story) – Kirk would have been eaten alive before he was able to get. Out. His. Dialog. in that inimitable Shatner style. If this one’s at Namco’s upcoming NYC press event next month, I’ll get some hands-on time and let you fine folks know what’s what…

BioShock Infinte’s Elizabeth: Creating Much More Than Just A Pretty Face…

It takes a good deal of work to put together a video game and with being Women’s History Month, I’m gathering Irrational Games is trying to celebrate their version of the event in a bit more interesting manner by showing what it took to create Elizabeth in its upcoming game, BioShock Infinite. As you’ll see, it wasn’t an easy process at all, but the end results seem to be working for both male as well as female fans of the series. Of course, the final test of that comes when the game hits stores on March 26, 2013 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Making of Defiance (7): Amanda & Kenya (And The Places They’ll Take You)…

Fans of Showtime’s Dexter and a few other shows she’s been in will recognize Julie Benz from her great work and it looks as if the streak will continue in Defiance. The upcoming syfy series launches eleven days after the PC/PS3/Xbox 360 game tie-in hits, so there will hopefully be enough people playing or hearing about the game to generate a wave of interest in the series. The big fat elephant in the room is quality, but so far, the show and game seem to have it in spades. As always, we shall see… but I say give this one a chance for a season and see where it takes you.

Deadly Premonition: TDC Q & A With SWERY65: Your Burning Q’s Get A’d (Even If You Didn’t Ask Any)…

What, you didn’t notice that director Swery65 (or Hidetaka Suehiro in real life) was taking questions about the upcoming PS3 Director’s Cut version of his cult Xbox 360 classic horror.humor hybrid? Shame on you… but it seems that he’s got a Deadly Premonition of his own and has answered what you’d probably ask had you known. This is good. Go watch the man in action (well, as much action as you can get from a Japanese guy sitting on a sofa and fielding silly to smart queries about his game) and then feel free to sit back and smile afterwards if you’re a PS3 owner and in the mood for a funny, frightening and just plain WEIRD game experience.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct: A Bit of Behind the Scenes With Merle & Daryl…

No, today isn’t National Zombie Day or anything like that, folks. I just go scooting through my inbox as stuff rolls in and post the fun stuff. Today just so happens to have a LOT of undead in games news. Must be a Friday thing or something…  Anyway, here’s a new look at Terminal Reality’s upcoming shooter set in The Walking Dead world. I like the gritty look of the game and some of that visceral action you’d expect from an undead-rekilling game. In a weird way, this one reminds me of BrainBox’ interesting but flawed Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler’s Green, a FPS that had a few problems, but was actually pretty damn scary and compelling once you got past its weak points. We’ll see what’s what with Merle and Daryl’s gory adventure soon enough when The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct ships out for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC March 19, 2013.

Defiance Ark Hunter Chronicles 4 & Making of 6: April May Not Be The Cruelest Month…

Want more DEFIANCE? OK, here you go, and with the game hitting retail on April 2 and the show popping up on syfy April 13, it’s clear that all that hard work will pay off as soon as both pieces of this long in development project launch. As I’ve noted previously, the game is great fun, fast paced and NOT like any other MMO on the market (Yes, even SOE’s epic shooter Planetside, which some are comparing it to). While there’s NO single player offline component, hopping online and playing at one’s own pace or with a group is smooth and the world is constantly active with things to do. I’m gathering the eleven-day lead up to the show will see some really hardcore players try to break the game by power-leveling and trying to defeat some of those massive bosses or Hellbug spawns solo (good luck with that, by the way). But I think Trion has planned well enough ahead, as the PvP and other more MP focused elements all take place in the same world and can be joined or avoided as one pleases. Continue reading

The Making of DEFIANCE (1 – 5): Nope, No Sharktopus Here, Folks…

I figure I may as well run these now, as I’ve finally watched them all and can safely say that this might indeed be a VERY cool show and even better than I was thinking. I still HATE the illiterate “syfy” re-branding (and NO, it’s not the “same” as sci-fi, which as I noted a while back, was reviled when the late Forrest J. Ackerman thought up that abbreviation), but I’m gathering no one but me is bitching about it these days…

Game of Thrones Season 3 Vlogs: Behind the Scenes (Before The Scenery’s All Chewed Up)…

Annnnd while you’re camped out in front of the TV for Season 3 of GoT to fire up your living room (or wherever you watch this show), Here’s a peek at some making of video logs, but I’m not FORCING you to watch these, you know. Hell, you may already have seen them if you’re one of those fans of the show scouring the Internet for every scrap of info. Hey, I try here at DAF, I try. And all without charging you a red cent! Just doing my job, folks… just doing my job…

The Walking Dead Survival Instinct Gameplay Trailer: TR & Activision Get Stalked By Biters (Again)…

TWD_SI_banner

Man, this game is swimming in such irate bile by the usual suspects. Here’s the trailer to check out – I think it looks fine so far and close to the bleak, grimy tone of the show. That said, a few facts for the intentionally ignorant:

Activision isn’t “making” the game at all – they’re a PUBLISHER, not a DEVELOPER. Lewisville, Texas-based veteran developer Terminal Reality is cooking this one up and yes, while they haven’t had a “perfect” track record, they’ve more than earned the respect of folks like me who play too many games, but don’t lump them all up into one big FPS-centric ball. I also like how it ties into the show, as new we all know that Merle and Daryl are back together in this half of the season (a nice touch that seems planned to fit the game into the show’s continuity). I hate speculation, but I’d bet a nickel that neither character buys the farm at the end, as they’ll be more useful alive for future episodes, we’ve already “lost” Merle once before and hell, there would be riots in the streets if Daryl bought it at the end (especially among non-gamers out there who’d be wondering what was up and how a major character vanished without them knowing a thing).

Telltale’s TWD game was fantastic thanks to its writing, stylized visuals and intense pacing thanks to the choice system gameplay, but wasn’t the big action-based experience some of the shooter fanatics wanted to play. This new game will appeal to them and as long as the story is tight, I can see fans of the adventure game hopping aboard for the ride. Let’s hope it’s a wild one full of surprises. And hey, look at  this way, chums – if the game is better than you’re thinking, once you do get to try it out, you can still storm Activision’s offices (with apologies and yummy crow pies for all)…

inFAMOUS 2 Behind the Scenes Video

SCEA and Sucker Punch’s Holiday Cheer, part deux – check out this chunk of “making of” footage from inFAMOUS 2 and go kiss your PS3 for getting yet another great game in 2011. I’d say someone needs to build a time-stopping machine so we can all set aside enough of it to actually play ALL the great games coming next year for every system…
