PlayStation Vita: What’s In The Box (Early Bird Version)

Courtesy of the PlayStation Blog, here’s what those lucky folks who pre-ordered a Vita First Edition Bundle will be getting on February 15, a week before the official North American launch. For those smiling folks bouncing up and down in their seats that need a good game recommendation or two, right off the bat Gravity Rush and Uncharted: Golden Abyss should keep you busy along with the pack-in game you’re getting.

David Jaffe Wants YOU To Shoot Up Sweet Tooth. For Real.

Now here’s a ridiculously awesome promo for Sony’s upcoming Twisted Metal, coming to the PS3 on Valentine’s Day (as well as a farewell of sorts to the franchise by series creator David Jaffe).  I was planning to write something funny about this, but the press release is oh so much more succinct and yes, amusing – here’s a snippet:

In honor of Twisted Metal’s launch on PS3, we’ve aimed an M249-SAW at a real-life version of Sweet Tooth’s ice cream truck. On 2/14 and 2/15, we’re letting you pull the trigger by hitting a button on your computer.

That’s right. Fire a military-grade machine gun just by pressing your space bar.

It’s a two-day, shoot-till-the-truck-goes-up-in-a-gigantic-ball-of-flames-style internet spectacular. And it’s all happening live at http://www.shootmytruck.com.

Now, you KNOW everyone with a passing interest in firearms (yeah, this is America) is going to be all over this one. Heck, I bet it only takes a few minutes to blast that truck into scrap, er, Twisted Metal (ba-dum-bum!). Boogie on over to the Shoot My Truck website, watch the unedited version of the video above and sign up for your chance. U.S. of A. residents only, sorry!

Sorcery: Magically Reemerging As A Much Better Game (And Yes, Still On My Radar)…

Of all the PlayStation Move software I’ve seen since the peripheral’s introduction, Sorcery has been the main title I’ve been wanting to get my paws on. While the original demo shown was exciting, it still had a ‘tech demo’ look to it and needed a few layers of polish. It’s obvious that Sony thought so as well because the game vanished into thin air after that first showing and I hadn’t seen it at a press event until it was displayed last December. As you can see from this PlayStation Blog interview, the upcoming Action/RPG has indeed come a long way and absolutely looks like a must-buy whenever it finally hits stores (which should be sometime in “Spring 2012” the last time I checked).

Starhawk Comes Out The Day After My Birthday…

Yeah, yeah, the public beta is out and plenty of fans have been playing the thing for a while at events and such, but I’m going to jump in feet first on launch day and figure stuff out on my own. Granted, I’m in it for the single player first and foremost, so there’s that. From the bits I have played and seen at Sony press events, I can tell this one’s going to be huge to the point of potentially getting a few gamers away from certain modern shooters for a bit. The team at Lightbox has really cooked up an instant classic and along with some of Sony’s other 2012 surprises, this looks to be the best year for the PS3 (and PS3 owners, of course)…

Gallery: PlayStation Library (US)

Here’s the rest of the PS1 collection to go with the PS1 RPG/SRPG library I posted a few weeks back. What’s here is about 100-150 games less than it was about two years back, so anything you don’t see was most likely played to death and sold or traded. I absolutely never wanted a complete PS1 collection anyway, as I’d have a ton of games here that I’d never play. Still, I wish I’d kept more of the racers and all of the shmups I sold off, but oh well. That last photo is stuff I dug up after I took the others and put everything away. Oops. I was wondering where my import copy of D no Shokotaku ended up all this time. The items on the bottom row of the pic are a few of the small selection game soundtracks I have: Soukaigi, Silent Hill, Threads of Fate and Biohazard Remix. I don’t have anything resembling a decent game soundtrack collection at all – I just stuck those in because they’re PS-related…

Gallery: PlayStation & PS2 Demo Library (Japanese)

Nowhere as many as I’d like to have and some aren’t pictured here, as I need to move about 500 or so games to get to the remaining few. I’ll update the gallery once I get that mighty task done. Some of these are incredible for what’s on the discs, from memory card download, interviews and exclusive content not seen outside Japan. Stuff like Net Yaroze demos (games made by those who bought the special Net Yaroze PlayStation model), some hilarious commercials and some great demos of games that were drastically different than what ended up on store shelves. The Project Zero disc is a DVD that features CG from the game and some other cool stuff, but isn’t playable. I know there are a ton of these non-playable demos out there, but I’m a lot more interested in trial version discs these days. The one other exception is the Summer Special 1996 disc that has a bunch of game trailers including the first look at Metal Gear Solid. That long movie was created entirely with in-game asset and actually makes the game look like a more action-packed experience than it turned out to be.

Escape Plan: A Look At The Vita’s Stylish Noir Puzzle/Adventure

From the always informative PlayStation Blog, check out this nice slice of info on one of the Vita’s most intriguing US launch window games. I love these types of cool visual experiments and I’m hoping the game catches on with as many people as possible so the developers can expand this into something bigger and better.

Twisted Metal “Grimm” Intro Trailer Does The Impossible…

I thought I was done with listening to Rob Zombie’s “Dragula” after hearing it so much in a few too many games back in the PS1 era, but after seeing this spectacular new HD trailer for the upcoming reboot of Twisted Metal, I’m all ready to bounce up and down on the couch like a hyperactive kangaroo with a controller in my hands. “Dig through the ditches, And burn through the witches, I slam in the back of my Dragulaaaaaaaaaaaaa!” (CRASH! BOOM!!!). Whoops. Er, February 14, 2012. Be there. I probably won’t be the only one singling out loud (or way off key), I bet…

Eleven Good Reasons To Buy A PlayStation Vita (And More to Come)*…

Nothing but game trailers here, folks. I figured why not run them all in one shot instead of padding out the blog with separate posts. Besides, I’m up too late again and need my beauty sleep before getting back into the saddle for another ride around the ol’ inbox. Anyway, enjoy the videos and go pre-order a Vita if you haven’t yet. Japanese gamers are already grabbing theirs, but apparently, it’ll be about a week before Famitsu posts the first pro reviews. I like all that I see here so far and can’t wait to see how they’ve turned out since I saw and played a few of them last.

(*Make that 12 good reasons if you add in RUIN with its wonderful cross-platform play seen in yesterday’s video)

A Double Shot of PS Vita Trailer Love…

Two slick trailers from Sony showing off the upcoming Vita and its many cool features. Between the games coming and the cross platform play with the PS3, it’s clear that Sony has a winner of a handheld system here. All those app-crazy types strangely betting on the Vita to fold are in for a shock, I say. Those inexpensive iOS games are way out of the quality league when compared to what’s coming and hell, some of us core gamers don’t want a damn phone in our gaming systems, period. That and I’d bet good money that Sony won’t be replacing the Vita in under a year and telling you the system you JUST bought is now obsolete.
