One of the best blends of JRPG, humor and genuine challenge for the unwary player, Half Minute Hero finally hits the PC in a nicely buffed up version that rounds up all the content from the PSP while adding a really interesting cartoon art style (check out the YouTube video channel here) and of course, retaining the same lightning-paced gameplay from the portable games intact. BUY this game, I say, as it will make you laugh at the familiar tropes it pokes fun at while you’re getting creamed by some pretty pesky enemies. You need to pay attention, plan ahead and fight for time here as you try to make that 30 seconds count. Don’t play this on a laptop while traveling, however – people will think you’ve gone nuts when you start yelling at your screen and yep, the men in the white coats will follow soon afterward.

Naughty Bear: Panic in Paradise Trailer (And A Release Date, Too!)
Annnnd here you go: October 12 only via PSN and XBLA. As a bonus video surprise, here’s Victim #8, Bubbles. Poor Bubbles! While I’m still holding my breath (sort of) that we see an combo disc featuring both games (including all the Gold Edition content), I guess I’ll have to get this digitally after all (PSN, puh-leeze). Ah well – given that the game is going to be even better than the original, i don’t mind going out of my way to snag a copy. That said, it would also be cool to see this hit the Vita as well, especially with a wave of really super portable games on the way from other publishers.
EVENT! EA’s Soccer & Speed Tour Rolls Into New York City Sept. 28-30
Soooo, what are you doing this weekend? If you’re around NYC or are popping in for a bit, you can play two of EA’s upcoming titles and maybe WIN some cool prizes with your gaming prowess. Out of nowhere, a truck rolls up (through a mysterious cloud of smoke optional), opens up and *BOOM!* the gaming gets underway. Playable versions of Need For Speed: Most Wanted (Criterion’s spectacular return to form with a crazy amount of cars and seriously fun multiplayer content that should make any Burnout fan keel over with joy) and FIFA Soccer 13 (depending on who you ask, arguably the best footie game on the market), are headed around the town for three days:
WHEN & WHERE:
Sept. 28, 3 PM – 8 PM: Upper 90 (697 Amsterdam Avenue New York, New York)
Sept. 28, 9 PM – Midnight: Genesis Bar (1708 2nd Ave #1, New York, New York)
Sept. 29, 10 AM – 1 PM: Legends (6 W 33rd St. New York, New York)
Sept. 29, 2 PM – 6 PM: GameStop (2322 Broadway and 85th St. #1, New York, New York)
Sept. 30, 9 AM – 9 PM: Upper 90 (359 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn, NY)
Will I show up to beat some of you into submission or lose terribly to the better man or woman? I’m not quite sure just yet, as I still have a pile of work to get to here. But who knows? Oh, I’d probably lose to anyone at FIFA, as I like watching more than playing. But as for NFS: MW? I did win one journalist’s tourney at an EA press event a while back, so I can at least hold my own at that game.
EDF 3 Portable Update: It’s An Invasion Alright – Just Ask Around!
And you thought YOU had bug troubles? Vita owners in Japan (and some lucky folks like me who are importing but STILL want this localized for our territories) are getting what I consider to be an instant system seller in the form of a SUPER enhanced version in one of the most action-packed “retro” sci-fi shooters ever. Of course, the man on the street stuff above makes for a fun watch that would be cool if the game was promoted here in the US in a similar manner (should it get the green light for a localization)…
F1 2012 Singapore Hot Lap Video: A Burning Query…
Hmmm… given all the restrictions on stuff like walking and chewing gum in public (or more precisely, spitting out that gum onto the street there), I wonder if you can get a fine in Singapore for speeding on a race track? Ha ha. Anyway, before i cause an international incident, let me point you to the lovely video above provided by the fine folks at Codemasters, makers of some mighty incredible racing experiences for quite some time. The game is out now, by the way, so while you’re dashing off to the store to snap up a copy, I shall make good my escape… into the future! *Poof!*
Naughty Bear: Panic in Paradise Dev Diary: Bearing Up For A Bigger Blast
If there was any doubt as to how much better PiP will be than the original Naughty Bear, well kids… this video should keep you well informed and have your wallets standing at attention. I like that Behavior Interactive has been a bunch of busy bees this past year, as they also did Brave for multiple platforms (a pretty decent job overall) and Naughty Bear is a whole lot different in tone (by far!) and definitely going to surprise many people with its depth and replay value. It may not be a Game of the Year contender, but it’s definitely a game you’ll enjoy a hell of a lot this year.
Oops – I missed the other SIX videos in this series somehow! Ah well, here’s number 7 – perhaps I’ll track down and post the rest after TGS is over. My inbox is FULL of news to pore over (and getting fuller) and I don’t want to fall too far behind.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Trailer: That Lightning Bottle Shakes Once More
OK, I’ll admit to not being so sure Peter Jackson could turn the clock back and make this upcoming film be as “special” as the trilogy, as often, a few too many years between epics this large means there’s a lot lost. Of course, it seems I’m wrong again (and that’s always good when that happens). That said, I’m probably going to wait until the inevitable home video release hits, as this will be yet another film to hunker down with and watch in its entirety once both parts are all done and there are director’s cuts floating around. Hey, I finally got around to watching all the Harry Potter movies one after the other a few months back (I wasn’t a fan of the books, so the films were a really hard sell for me until about six flicks in).
WETA Workshop Makes Valve’s Day (And Mine Too)…
OK, now THIS is pretty damn cool. Then again, everything WETA does or has done in the past has managed to be beyond awesome. As you can see here, that turret is exactly like the ones from the Portal games (but I bet it can’t sing!). Of course, if you never hear a peep from the company after this and it turns out WETA made the thing TOO well (as in fully functioning and happily psychotic), well… there’s a very awesome one of a kind collectible some brave Portal fan can volunteer to retrieve. Hmmm… that might make a pretty cool mod, huh?
Random Film of the Week: Don’t Look in the Basement
This crazy, low budget 1973 indie horror flick was a big part of my childhood because it seemed to always be on WOR here in New York as one of the late-night horror movies they showed on Saturday nights, and for some reason (even despite it freaking me out all the time), I’d sit through it fascinated by the insanity taking place. In fact, the film takes places at a mental institution gone way off the rails thanks to its rather unorthodox means of treatment. You get two murders right off the bat, a pretty but rather dopey new nurse arriving on the scene who’s a bit slow on the uptake as to what’s going on, a bunch of patients with some rather unusual quirks and it all wraps up with a nicely gory finale and probably the most disturbing end credit sequences you’ll see in a genre flick.
Is it a great movie? Nope, and in fact, it hardly scrapes above lousy in every aspect, I’d say. What works in its favor however, is the general tone of unease and creepiness that hits you over the head right from the start. You know something bad is going to happen right away and other than a few boring patches, the film delivers on much of what its opening moments promise. These days it’s a public domain film, so yup, you can watch it in its entirety above. I’d doubt this will ever reach the remake status some cult genre classics have gotten, but even as raw and weird as it is, it still manages to be freaky enough where it counts. OK, then – that’s a really short and simple movie post this for week, as I’m working on a bunch of other stuff. But it’s all good, as now you can go make a big bowl of popcorn, grab a beverage and watch yourself a pretty silly but scary slice of the 70’s…
Addendum: Oops – it looks as if someone may remake this after all at some point Oh well, i still think the original will be better just because it has its crude charms working for it, warts and all…
Borderlands 2 Launch Trailer: Not That You’ll Have Any Free Time To Watch It (But You Might Get More Than You Wanted…)
Yeah, you know who you are. In fact, there’s a mighty good chance you’re not even reading this because you’re already playing the game. Either that, or, you’re catching up on a few hours of much-needed sleep before you pop out of bed bright and early, call in sick for work with the “flu” or whatever, rush down to your nearest game emporium to snap up a copy of the game and take the rest of the week off.
PROTIP: Stay the hell OFF any social networking site with the bragging rights posting about how long you’ve been playing. Given that the commercials are all over the damn place, your boss KNOWS what’s up, but can’t prove anything if you stay silent and buried under the blankets on Pandora. Screw it up royally by being a braggart and watch it all come crashing down when you join the gainfully unemployed before your tweet or status update gets cold. Just a thought.
And don’t go blaming Gearbox or 2K if you get canned, cowboy – no one told you to be so stupid in this age of TMI when it’s not necessary. Enjoy the game!
