As I’ve said before, Sony’s not going to let the PS3 fade into the usual “old” console obscurity as they’ve got a few more great first-party games that show off some developers at the top of their game. Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us looks to combine solid storytelling and intense action in an exclusive that looks to be one of the best games made for the console. The recently released Dark Horse Comics prequel has sold out (well, as far a physical copies go), so it looks like plenty of gamers who picked the book up (and happen to own PS3’s) will be zipping on down to their favorite game shop (or lurking by their mailboxes) when the game’s June 14, 2013 release date rolls up.

The Last of Us: “Meet the Infected” Trailer: Er, Let’s Not, And Say We Did…
Hmmm… somehow that trip to Devil’s Island on the Titanic via Bermuda Triangle route seems like a really much better idea than hanging out with developer Naughty Dog’s creepy-looking non-zombies. Some people have been getting a wee bit confused about The Last of Us in thinking it’s borrowing from Capcom’s Resident Evil franchise, but I’d bet this is another case of getting to actually PLAY a game and seeing you were completely wrong from the beginning. If I were a smarter man, I’d go around making bets with all those skeptics, but then again, it’s not a smart thing to bet against or with a ton of strangers you’ll have a really tough time collecting a dime from. That and my antisocial side won’t let me interact with people who only piss me off too much because they’re ALWAYS wrong and even if they are and know it, they still feel the need to express an ill-formed opinion or three. It’s like having an argument with a child who doesn’t quite understand that that lie they keep telling doesn’t work anymore (which, amusingly enough, can be said about most politicians!).
Anyway, The Last of Us hits stores and PSN on June 12, 2013.
The Last of Us “Wasteland Beautiful” Behind the Scenes: Art Class Is In Session…
A quick lesson in art direction and how Naughty Dog created the destroyed but stunningly gorgeous game world from their upcoming PS3 exclusive, set to hit retail and PSN on June 14, 2013. As I’ve said previously, Sony’s not leaving this generation with a bunch of shovelware to remember the system by, so fans should be more than pleased the the console is still getting a number of key releases at least for the rest of this year and possibly into 2014.
The Last of Us: American Dreams #1 (Another Dark Horse From Dark Horse Comics)
Dark Horse Comics gets its tie-in mini-series rolling into stores and if the first issue is any indication, the remaining three issues should be essential reading before the game hits retail in North America on June 14, 2013. Co-writer and artist Faith Erin Hicks has a style that’s very Harvey Kurtzman influenced (always a good thing) with a touch of David Mazzucchelli (another good thing) and there’s a nicely gritty feel to her brushwork that’s a great counterpoint to the video game’s hyper-realistic graphics.
The Last of Us art director and lead writer Neil Druckmann is also on the case, co-writing with Hicks a nicely paced tale that’s got some intriguing characters whose fates aren’t all clear nor tied into the upcoming game experience. Verdict: absolutely check this out if you’re a PS3 owner and comics fan looking forward to Naughty Dog’s survival adventure game – it’s out now at a comics shop near you.
The Last of Us Redband Trailer: Now With 100% More “Ewww, I Get It…”
I’ve always found the concept of the Redband (or Red Band) trailer a bit stupid when all is said and done. YES, I understand that this stuff isn’t for the wee bairns, lest their dainty eyelash hairs catch fire from the heinous evil that they see, but hell. I mean, you can easily see this stuff on YouTube and so can little kids who can search for violent stuff like this, but whatever. For some reason, the ESRB keeps an iron fist on this type of content despite broadcast TV being much MORE violent. Oh – click on that pic of the Survival Edition to see the video. I don’t want the ESRB to come by and break my legs…
Speeeeeaking of breaking legs… (this just in!): As for ACTUAL violence and nasty gore NO one should see, er… how about some nice and gory NCAA basketball action, hmmm? I didn’t see that shocking video, but I certainly couldn’t get away from people talking about it all damn day. Double hmmmm. Maybe that sort of thing, nasty as it is, should go into the next EA Sports hoops game, so fans of that sport know it’s not all slick tattoos, hottie cheerleaders and fatty signing bonuses that net you an automatic sneaker contract that turns you into a multimillionaire a blown knee or worse away from no career before you’re 30 or so. Anyway, Naughty Dog’s new masterpiece, The Last of Us, which has NOTHING to do with sports or real violence hits retail on June 14, 2013. Get it and be prepared to hole up for a while.
The Last of Us TV Spot #1: Still Among the Living… Mostly
Finally, Sony drops the first of what’s probably going to be a few TV ads for Naughty Dog’s upcoming (and possibly final) PlayStation 3 game, and it’s a nice and tense doozy. Those aren’t your garden variety zombies popping up throughout that ad, by the way… you’ll see. Anyway, the game looks great and if the multi-million selling Uncharted series is any indication, this game will do quite well at retail and with the critics.
Of course, it’s going to be hard to show too much of the game so nothing from the plot gets overly spoiled, but I think a lot of folks going in expecting one thing will be surprised when they get something else. Me, I’m looking forward to this for a ton of good reasons, so I’ll be there with bells on come launch day.
The Last of Us Dev Diary 1: Hush (Well, After You Gag From Looking At That Creature)…
Naughty Dog’s upcoming survival adventure isn’t quite the last great PS3 game, but ever since the amazing E3 demo from last year, PS3 owners have been keeping their eyes peeled for anything and everything about this one. Well, it looks as the developer diaries are getting rolled out on YouTube and I’d gather we’ll see more of these all the way up to the game’s June 14 launch. System seller this late in the game? I think so, for some who still might not be ready for a new console and want something they’re going to play and be knocked off their feet by. Then again, I can’t see anyone looking forward to this with a PS3 holding out for a shinier and more visually spectacular version (which isn’t going to happen anytime soon, folks). This is the work of a dev team at their best, so don’t pass it up at all…
The Last of Us Story Trailers: The World Ends With (or Without) You…
To some folks out there, Naughty Dog’s upcoming PS3 exclusive begs the question “Do we really need a new console?” To which Sony, industry analysts and plenty of other folks will say “well, mmmmaayyyybe…” While they’re spinning and scratching like an old LP being tickled by an epileptic DJ, I say sure, why not. Now to go rob a bank so I can pre-order one before the mad early adopter crush of crazed “gotta have it yesterday!” superfans and “Ooh, Im’a make a fortune on eBay” losers grab every available system for three months. As to the game proper (which arrives on June 14, 2013), it does look mighty spectacular for this late in the PS3’s lifespan, but you’re looking at work from one of Sony’s not-so secret weapon first-party studios…
The Last of Us Story Trailer: Happy Birthday To Me (And You, Hopefully)…
So, Naughty Dog’s upcoming survival/adventure game comes out on my birthday (May 7, 2013). Well, well, well now. Hmmm… now I know what I want to be doing then. Finding out how the hell I’m going to make time to play it, what with all the other games I want coming out next year. Well, at least I guess I’ll have less people to worry about when I go to buy my copy of the game if all those folks who believe the world will end THIS year do themselves in for some crazy reason. Silly rabbits, I say… why kill yourself and miss out on the fun when there are too many great games to play that include survivable doomsday scenarios? What do I believe in? Well, I believe I’ll have another drink and get back to you after the world doesn’t go to hell in a handbasket. And you can’t make a bad cup of tea unless you try really hard to do so. I believe in that, too.
The Last of Us Story Teaser: Naughty Dog’s Survival Epic Means Business
With the so-called “aging” PS3 heading into its last year or so as a viable console, it’s really great to see developers like Naught Dog keep forging ahead with key AAA titles for the console that will absolutely be worth that $60 price tag. The Last of Us just may be one of the best console games of this generation as well as one more example of how story-driven games will always be superior to the usual multiplayer madness that’s about as deep as a broken teacup. Keep your eyes on this one, folks – it’s going to be quite special…
