Hands-On: Crytek and Trion Worlds Want You to Put On Your WARFACE

Sitting down with Crytek’s Peter Holzapfel, Producer on the upcoming FPS WARFACE, one gets the immediate feeling that he’s more than happy with the upcoming AAA free to play shooter coming from Crytek through Trion Worlds in North America. We talk about the game’s worldwide appeal to shooter fans, F2P junkies looking for a quick fix and how the game is being published in different territories by different publishers for a few minutes, then we get down to the game proper, which is pretty fantastic and quite fun. Note that this is coming from a guy who doesn’t play shooters heavily. I’m more a fan of story-driven games and not multiplayer focused group shooting each other in the head games, but I do know a well-made game when I see and play it. What’s immediately apparent (aside from some more amazing CryEngine 3 visuals) is how accessible the team-based shooter is. Yes, it borrows elements from Team Fortress, Call of Duty and Crytek’s own games, but the experience is a more contained and faster paced game than any of the Far Cry or Crysis games, making for a perfect online experience.

HAWKEN Basic Training Videos: Maintenance, Plus Making Sure You’ll Have No Control Issues

Adhesive Games and Meteor Games continue to impress with their amazing-looking mech combat game, finally coming as a free to play experience at the end of the year. Of course, personally I think that with a good writer and some nice reworking, a solid story mode would help the game even more, but that’s not my choice to make. I just hope that the game does well enough that it doesn’t get buried under all those other F2P titles flooding the market. Of course, if it does do well, I can expect to see some smart developer make a more story driven game that has single player AND multiplayer content. As always, we shall see… in the meantime, feel free to sign up for the beta, play a chunk of cool modes and help make a great game much greater.

What Is QuakeCon? A Video Primer Of Sorts For People Like Me…

Yeah, that’s right… I’ve never been to a QuakeCon, as it’s always been way out of my budget and I’m not the biggest PC gamer out there (unless it’s some vintage vault classic, super fun indie stuff or RPGMaker epic that’s worth raving about), so that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. Still, I’ve been to a few East Coast tournaments (that World Cyber Games held here in NYC a bunch of years back and some other fun events), so I know that things get really fun and really crazy in a good way for fans of id Software’s games. Eh, one day I’ll get out west again, so perhaps I’m not a total loser. Hell, I do need a decent vacation. after not having one for ages..

E3 2012: As A Game, Defiance Proves Me Wrong, But The Show Still Needs To Be Worth Watching…

OK, I’ll admit it. I wasn’t at ALL keen on Defiance from the moment I heard about it. Sure, Trion Worlds is known for some solid MMO experiences, but the fact that the game would be based on a show from the network that brings us crappy camp like Sharktopus and Jersey Shore Shark Attack! didn’t exactly make me comfortably assured about reliable quality control in regards to the upcoming TV series.  Sure, the Battlestar Galactica reboot was groundbreaking and great from the start , but as the song goes, “What Have You Done For Me Lately?”

Then I saw some gameplay and well, I had to eat my hat…

Oh, Hell… It’s Diablo III!

To make my Monday even more a kick in the pants, I get a retail copy of Diablo III (whee!) that I can’t play for a few reasons (booo!). However, unlike the Windows debacle I’m currently dealing with, i actually have a plan B that I set in motion a while ago so I can actually play the game using a friend’s PC at his place. Fortunately, I hooked him on Diablo II a while back and as he’s not what you call a “core” gamer, he’s happy that he’ll get to be see what all the fuss is about (and eventually play the game himself, as he’s in no tearing hurry to be a day one fanatic). Anyway, there’s nothing I can do now except wait until the servers go live. Too bad the game can’t be installed and played offline (as it should, grrr). Hell, I’d at LEAST have a single player review up by the end of the week if that were the case…

Max Payne Multiplayer DLC Announced: Rockstar Pass Packs It All In As A Decent Deal For MP Fans

While some of us will be wrapped up in the single player mode multiple times until we’ve done and seen everything it has to offer, Rockstar Games plans to keep fans of online play even busier. The company has announced a wealth of downloadable multiplayer content for Max Payne 3 as well as its Rockstar Pass program that allows purchasers access to this premium content. Beginning now, the Pass is up for pre-order online over PSN and Xbox Live and at retail Best Buy and GameStop locations in the US for $29.99 (or 2400 Microsoft Points, if you’re a 360 owner). Like other online pass programs, users will get first crack at new DLC as soon as it becomes available and it looks as if Rockstar is planning to roll out a hefty amount of content starting in June 2012:

June 2012

Local Justice Map Pack

Summer 2012

Disorganized Crime Map Pack

Deathmatch Made In Heaven Mode Pack

Hostage Negotiation Map Pack

New York Minute Co-Op Pack

Fall 2012

Painful Memories Map Pack

Trickle Down Economics Map Pack

Botanicula: You Could Call It “Tree’s Company” If You Like (Ha, Ha)…

Now that GOG.com is making itself a household name these days among gamers in the know (well, more like gamers in the know who THOUGHT they were cool beans until they got gog.com accounts and are now much cooler), they’re adding even more excellent content like this wonderful looking point & click adventure game by Jaromír Plachý and Amanita Design. I actually wish games like this were a lot more appreciated, as well as available on more platforms (I’d buy it on the Vita for sure), but hey – this is a great start for such a charming little indie game you should probably give a try one of these days…

Defiance Trailer: OK, If The Show Stinks, This Will Be A HUGE Waste Of Time And Talent…

Was that TOO harsh? Oops, sorry (heh). Well, I was trying not to be TOO negative, but I was royally bugged by a few things in the game and TV show description. I’m just saying that this is a massive risk for Sony, SOE, Trion Worlds and the former Sci-Fi Channel (yes, I still refuse to use that illiterate new spelling they paid someone far too much to change a few years ago). Sure, the game looks great so far (and has a way to go before its complete), but what if the vastly hyped upcoming TV show is less Battlestar: Galactica and more Terranova?  Oops. For a few potential players, that would doom the game, especially if they have memories of The Matrix Online or a few other MMO’s that promised the world but gave up the ghost somewhere along the line.

Another Day, Another GOG.com Commercial (And Now I Want Cake)…

Tomorrow is the big day for the even more revamped GOG.com to launch and someone’s been busy pumping out some amusing ads that seem to be poking fun at other game download services. Nothing like a little friendly competition, but I’m betting the DRM-free aspect of GOG is guaranteed to win over certain folks who aren’t fans of it on other sites…

GOG.com Wants YOU To Get “Steamed” About DRM And Regional Game Prices…

If you still don’t have a GOG.com account… GET ONE. This DRM-free game download service has been around for a few years offering up some of the best classic PC games along with modern content (CD Projekt Red Studios’ The Witcher II: Assassins of Kings being) and now it looks as if the company will be taking on Valve’s Steam service (as well as other popular download services) shortly.  That is, if I’m reading the not so hidden messages in these amusing advertisements correctly. Tuesday is the big announcement, so check back here for an update or simply boogie on over to the GOG.com page and see what’s what…
