I thought we’d see something like a dozen different ads by now, but Marvel is taking their time on rolling these out it seems. Either that, or it’s because they’ve shown so much of the action scenes in bits and pieces that revealing the actual story would be a bad thing. Of course, as I’m not one of those internet poker-a-rounders digging up every plot point or on-set screenshot out there so I can spoil my screening, I don’t mind the slow reveals one bit. Actually, it would be amazing to see a major motion picture that’s not a Terence Malick film pop up with not so much spolieriffic fanfare and blow audiences away because it was under-hyped and amazing. Eh, like that ever happens these days…

Iron Man 3 World Tour: The Cast Gets Around, The Crowds Go Wild…
Well, these big press and fan-packed junkets are always weird and often dull as hell for the casts of these blockbusters, but you have to give Robert Downey Jr. a few metric tons of credit for doing his own awesomely quirky thing to shake stuff up. Well, reaction to the film is definitely great overseas, so that enthusiasm will no doubt carry on as the film arrives at a mega-multiplex near you on May 3. Hey, you still have time to finish that Coke can Iron Man outfit you’re working on (yeah, I know you didn’t want me to say anything, but…), so get to it! Just leave the windows open when you’re spray painting, as huffing in those fumes will do you in faster than the Mandarin with his can opener ring…
Iron Man 3 Featurette 2: Tony Stark Certainly Doesn’t Buy His Suits At Men’s Wearhouse…
Another week, another Iron Man 3 making-of feature bound for the home video release (mark my words). It’s fun seeing Marvel set up their universe through these recent flicks that do an interesting job at condensing that huge history from their comics into two-hour (or less) chunks easily digested by the masses. Granted, for some reason Spider-Man, Ghost Rider and some other heroes haven’t yet gotten that “perfect” reworking as film properties (at least in my opinion), but it’ll be interesting to see how the characters from other films cross over into the more popular ones over time…
Iron Man 3 Featurette 1: More DVD Extras Before There’s a DVD To Think About Buying…
I’ll bet you a nickel that you see this on the DVD and Blu-Ray when it comes out in, oh… about a year from now (or by Christmas, actually). I’m not psychic, folks – just right (ha ha). You can believe that this video isn’t going to waste and neither are the rest of them Marvel has planned. Of course, when you finally DO buy that DVD or Blu-Ray… you’ll also know which special features to skip because you’ve seen them already. Hey, I’m just trying to save you all some time so you can make more popcorn (or less). Hmm – let me shut up now before Marvel sends The Mandarin after me…
Iron Man 3 Clip #1: Tony Stark Makes You Feel…
So much for the “He’s a cool exec with a heart of steel” stuff, huh? When the man gets mad, he gets really mad, so if you’re reading this post and wearing ten rings on your fingers (even if you’re not The Mandarin, which means you also have bells on your toes), you should be shaking in your boots and fancy robe (yeah, you KNOW you have one on right now – I won’t tell a soul). Anyway, let’s see now… 48 seconds… times la, la… carry the one… OK, at this rate Marvel can show the entire movie on YouTube in something like 57 more of these clips and you won’t have to pay a DIME to see it. Unless they figure out a way to may you PAY to use YouTube (cue *JINX!* music)…
Iron Man 3 Fandango TV Spot: What, This IS Cinerama?
OK, we get TWO TV ads in one day for this upcoming soon to be blockbuster? Hey, don’t blame me, blame Marvel for posting them so far apart. Anyway, what’s up with the oddball aspect ration? Sure, it looks awesome, but WordPress defaults these videos into such a tiny size that this will look like a Band-Aid in the post. Eh, I’m SURE you all know you can play this full screen so you can see what’s going on, right? Anyway, I wouldn’t mind finding out if anyone out there actually has a working Cinerama screen setup to show off, as I’d love to see some of those old films in that crazy wide view they ran in. I’ve only caught some stuff on TCM, but no TV out there can do the format justice…
Iron Man 3 TV Spot #4: That’s A LOT Of Iron In The Air…
One thing that’s going to get a lot of people into those theater seats is all those Iron Man suits zipping around like they’re coming off an assembly line. I can’t imagine this in real life, as all you’d see outside would be Fat Iron Man, Too Low Pants Iron Man, Homeless Iron Man, Slow Old Lady Iron Man (they fly in packs), Letting That Dog Poop On The Street And Not Cleaning It Up Iron Man and a few other annoying and impervious to damage Iron Man suits in action. Bleh. It’s the new Rascal (or Weasel, given that company’s legal woes of late). And THIS, dear reader, is WHY we have movies to watch. You get the hell away from real life for two hours at a time (not counting 20 minutes of trailers)…
Iron Man 3 TV Spot #3: Orange You Glad The Mandarin’s Not Real?
OK, OK… that was a REALLY terrible (and way too obvious) pun (and only one of a few too many – collect them all!), but I couldn’t help myself. Hell, Sir Ben is practically twirling his mustache as he chews the scenery up and spits out the seeds. Granted, some of you will find this sort of villainy quite appealing (another pun!), but I can see some more of you thinking this guy and his wacky candy rings is really fruity (*zing!*). Of course, I’d bet if he WERE real and standing within eyeball contact, you’d be hard pressed to say that to his face. More likely than not, he’d freshly squeeze some juice from your melon with a few waves of his fingers. OK, let me shut up before the Pun-isher has to come after me (Bwaa-ha-ha!). Good Night, folks…
Iron Man 3 TV Spot 1: Not Too Early, Never Too Late, Right?
Sure, May 3 isn’t exactly THAT far away… then again, it’s not exactly close, is it? Still, this seems to be the sweet spot for these blockbusters where a month or so in advance, the TV commercials start dropping in many varieties. Of course you can expect 30 and 60-second spots, clips scattered around cable and online, the early screening buzz (where the more fortunate press get to show up and blab about positively or otherwise on their sites) and finally, a few premieres of the star-studded variety.
Of course, for most films I eventually choose to see, I just flip a coin and decide whether I catch in a theater with a bunch of annoying people around me and sit through 20 minutes of trailers for stuff I probably won’t see or wait a few more months until it pops up on video. Tick, tick, tick, tick…
Iron Man 3 (Trailer 2): Just In Case You Were Wondering If It Was Going to be Good…
Hmm… It seems Marvel Productions is going to be pushing this one much harder than they need to, but that’s fine by me. The multiple TV spots should be fun to watch as they follow the “serious/action/catchy joke finale” thing most of these comic book flicks (and heck, most other movies) get when truncated down to 15 to 30 second spots. I don’t think I’ll run them all or I’d need to change the name of the site to “IRON MAN 3 Trailers!” or something corny like that.
Overkill was never my style (nor was coming up with good alternate site names, as you’ve probably guessed)…
