Just asking, as I’ve not been interested in them for ages and I ran into a few people today at random who also don’t give a hoot, but were a lot more vocal about it (as In, I overheard some really funny anti-Olympic conversations while at the post office and then the market). Then again, I’m not much of a sports fan, so it’s not as if I’m suddenly going to fall over backwards just to stay glued in front of the TV for too many hours keeping a medal count. Besides, i have games to play and a few movies to catch up on, so while the rest of the world is going ga-ga over half-dressed athletes getting all hot and bothered while breaking all sorts of records, I’ll be biding my time with a few brain-bending jumping puzzles and goblin stomping or something… That is all.

Things You Find Out At Starbucks While Getting A Free Drink…
So, today from noon to 3pm, Starbucks was introducing its new Refreshers drinks by giving away Tall sizes to anyone who walked into a location. I decided to take advantage of this at my regular Starbucks and a second one just over a mile away (and a nice walk, too) just to confirm something that was bugging me about the Wi-Fi service at the closer location. Turns out I was right, as the Wi-Fi at the shop near me stinks badly while the service at the other spot was flawless and fast. Yes, I was FINALLY able to update my Vita (after installing an older update from the Gravity Rush game card), so from here on in, that location will be my go-to spot for any portable PSN downloads and demos I need to track down. I could use the exercise, so it’s all good.
Oh yeah, the Refreshers were nice. Two flavors: Lime and Berry Hibiscus or something like that. Made with green coffee beans and real fruit, so there was a bit of a jolt (I felt sorry for the parents snapping up Coolers for their kids – it’s going to be a rough Friday night for those wired ones is all I’ll say), not a lot of sweetness (a good thing!) and overall a nice addition to the already hefty lineup the chain offers.
Catching Up (Sort of)…
OK, after a bit of delay thanks to a few aches and pains (creak, groan!) plus the stupidly HOT weather we’ve been having, I’m back to working on some previews that should go up this week: Resident Evil 6 and Street Fighter X Tekken (Vita) from Capcom’s press tour, Some fun EA stuff (The new Medal of Honor, Need For Speed Most Wanted, A few Sims games) and one or two others. I’ll probably post some reviews I started a while back, but I need to finish the games and go over the notes I’ve taken, as I like completing games before I write final impressions. Um, that is all. Maybe. I still have to think of what Random Film to recommend this week…
Hey, Her Universe? Maybe You Should Let Girls Be Their Own “Geek” If They Want To?
Hmmmm. Something about this San Diego Comic Con event press release bugged me, so I’ll print it below the jump in its entirety and hope some of the female readers respond about how they feel about this event, if anyone is thinking of attending and why. Maybe it’s a “guy thing” but, I’ve never liked being marketed to as part of a demographic and don’t like it much it when some otherwise nice, but corporate-minded folks sweep in and co-opt a “scene” that does just fine on its own (and hell, isn’t really a “scene” to begin with). Individualism and free expression, “geek” culture or not shouldn’t have prizes or “experts” attached to it, nor be swept up in a branding scheme set on nudging anyone (“geeks” or not) into malls to buy an image previously created by each person for him or herself and no one else.
But hey, we’re in the long era of marketing madness for everything possible and well, too many people fall right into the clutches of some really good PR people and their high concept ideas. I’m old enough to have been someone who had his own style (you should have seen me back in the 80’s) and didn’t care if people thought it was weird, but now, it seems that not even this sort of individuality is safe from someone trying to tap our brains and wallets to the point that we’re told what’s “cool” as if we have no clue. Hint: If you have to buy the damn Princess Toadstool T-shirt and can’t make your own… that’s NOT really cool or “geeky”.
The same thing happened to the Seattle music scene and “punk” before that, so this is nothing new. In terms of fandom and such, the bulk of this decade has been all about making “retro” gaming and otherwise cool stuff into separate gals and guys camps when they should all be the same enjoyable mess for all they were before. I don’t look at a girl gamer and see a pair of boobs with a joystick. I see a fellow traveler that I can talk shop with, drop a few historical facts on or point the way to people who know more than I to share my passion for the medium. Guys who still see girls as “strange” for playing games, listening to film music or having other interests that don’t seem “right” are the ones mixed up. So are marketeers who try to wrap up every gal with a passing interest in comics, tech or games under the now suspect “geek” label.
For me, the whole “geek culture” explosion has turned from a true DIY deal to a cash cow that’s rightfully generated income for people savvy enough to fool so-called “geeks” into parting with their dollars by the boatload. On the other hand, it’s basically taken away the right for anyone with TRUE indie spirit to call themselves anything because it’ll be marketed into oblivion thirty seconds after that person identifies him or herself as something new. Also, isn’t it a little insulting to be seen as a stereotypical “gal geek” because you enjoy gaming, sci-fi or other stuff that someone like me enjoys in a non-geeky manner? Oh, questions, questions, questions!
Still, I’d like to think some of you gals out there might show up at Comic-Con and ask some tough questions rather than roll in all dolled up for a goodie bag. OK, am I being a total jerk here, or do I have a point? Read on and feel free to speak up. I’m listening…
Oh yeah, just asking, but are transgender gals allowed to attend? Er, not that I’m interested, but it IS an interesting question, no?
Are We Headed For A Data Daze? Maybe.
Is the big new (or not so new if you’ve been following this stuff) push to charge consumers for data usage coupled with the elimination of “unlimited” plans going to cripple mobile and soon enough, console gaming in the future? I think so, specially for any users on a budget. Imagine your ISP capping the amount of data you can receive just because they can introduce these plans based on what amounts to a guessing game that traps some into paying more simply because they enjoy their hobby. Granted, I’m betting most users will pay through the nose (when you’re hooked, you’re hooked)… up until their service providers start charging them for storing and streaming data over their usage limits. Well, I’ll just sit back and wait to see what happens, but I expect a lot of virtual protesting to start popping up in a few ways at time marches onward… Of course, I probably don’t know what I’m talking about, but I also don’t see these bills going DOWN any time soon…
Family Matters (Back In A Bit)…
Hey folks – my normal post a day plus routine is slowing to a stop for the moment, as I’m currently filling in for a relative who has been taking care of another. As soon as things get back to some sort of normalcy, I’ll be back in a bit with regular updates…
Tweaks and Fiddles Says: Get Some Sleep, Creep!
Hmmmm… Don’t you hate it when you hit “Publish” BEFORE you’re actually done with an article you wanted to post much later, which in turn forces you to stay up and forge onward to edit/finish it instead of something else you wanted to actually complete FIRST because it’s kind of overdue and you were working on it for a while?
Just asking, as that NEVER happens to me (eye roll)…
My Tuesday Was A Bit Bumpy. Et Tu?
Bleh. I actually lost an entire review post I was in the process of editing thanks to a storm blowing through here, so I’m rewriting from a previous auto save. Well, who said life was easy? Also, I got a copy of Game of Thrones and the nice hardcover art book. So far, I only put an hour or so into the game and it’s definitely much more text heavy and old school in some ways. A lot of work went into the game, though, so when I get done, I’ll score it fairly. Back in a bit…
Cloudy With A Chance Of Stupid…
Some days, it’s just too easy to dislike the internet. I’m talking mostly about YOU, Diablo III and your need for us solo players to ALWAYS be online even if we don’t want to be. Well, whatever – I still think Blizzard would make MORE money if they allowed more people to play the game offline (hell, we’re not all thieves and cheaters, silly). That’s all for now. I’ll be back later with something more productive and only slightly less snarky.
Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’ Sold For Almost 120 Million Dollars Last Night. Eek!
Holy cats. Hell, I’d bet good money that Edvard Munch never dreamed his creepy little painting would rake in such an insane amount of money. Then again, he DID do four different versions of the thing, so perhaps he was trying to drive the future value down, a ha, ha and ha. Anyway, that amount of money rather greatly annoys me. So much so, in fact, that I did my own version of The Scream unintentionally yesterday. Hey, I can play the poor artist part VERY well, especially as I’m poor (and an artist when I feel like it). Say hello to the Grizzly Pawppet! Growl! Now, where’s my damn millions?
Oh, wait… Eddie (or is it Edvie?) Munch isn’t collecting a dime of that selling price, as he’s no longer with us. Good thing I don’t have his agent, I guess…
