Just look at them. Lovely, aren’t they? If Coilworks’ awesome free-run/shooter/platformer Cloudbuilt doesn’t win some awards this year, I’m hanging up my controllers and packing it in for good as a gamer. This is a game I so WANT to succeed if only for the fantastic art direction and fact that it’s just too much fun for PC gamers to have all to themselves. Think of Mirror’s Edge, Gunvalkyrie, and a bunch of classic 8 and 16-bit action games all wrapped up in a neat little (and HIGHLY challenging) package. Then again, the game is ALL about pinpoint control and making the best of mistakes as there’s a way out of almost any bad jump, boost or wall dash provided you have keen reflexes and don’t panic.

Lead character Demi exudes the correct amount of cute and deadly as she blasts around and through those timed stages trying to survive death drops, enemies and other hazards and there’s a great sense of speed and accomplishment as one zips around the maps. While I usually hate timed games, I’ve found experimentation allows one to forget the clock ticking away as it’s really not too important when you’re learning the ropes. Messing around in an 80% complete build has been fun, although I did have to borrow a Windows 7-enabled laptop to play. The final game MAY support XP (even though Microsoft won’t anymore in a month’s time) and Vista (yuk, I’ve never liked Vista for much, but some use it), but if it doesn’t, I guess I’ll finally need to take the plunge into a less “obsolete” OS.

This is one reason I prefer console games and I hope Coilworks has plans to get this game on a few of those usually plug and play systems. Anyway, Rising Star Games is getting Cloudbuilt out on Steam March 20, 2014, so definitely keep your eyes peeled for this if the screens an trailer above and art below have your fancy struck.
