Got two bucks handy and an iPhone or iPad? Of course you do! Like to dance? Absolutely (even though you only do it when no one is around. Yes, I do KNOW these things). Good. Go get GO DANCE, Sega’s new app that’s a pure blast of fun bound to liven up any get together with some cool dancing and plenty of competitive action.
While that budget price point means only two songs are included with the app (LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem and Nicki Minaj’s Super Bass, more tracks are available (Flo Rida’s Wild Ones and Avicii’s Levels) as in-App purchases and more are on the way. The game uses the front-facing camera on your device to scan and track your face and torso allowing for some great and realistic dance action from your customizable onscreen avatar.
The game’s looks are nicely hip and reminiscent of the art style in the sleeper Nintendo DS title Feel the Magic: XY/XX with a lot more color and transforming backdrops. Your avatar can be male or female and while not a single Sega mascot character or level can be found here (the game is clearly designed to appeal to non-gamers and casual players), it would be fantastic to see a Space Channel 5 stage complete with a Ulala avatar, perhaps as an IAP down the road. Given that the game also supports Apple TV’s Airplay function, I’d bet a lot of iOS-owning Sega fans would want to boogie on their big-screen HDTV to some cool remixes of classic Sega tunes as well as any mega-dance hits the company licenses.
I’m normally not much of a dance game fan, but GO DANCE absolutely has a way of making you want to feel the music and get moving for a few minutes of addictive playing for points. The great thing is, once you buy the app, you can prop your ‘Phone or ‘Pad at a quiet party and turn the place into a dance floor within seconds. Sega has an instant hit here that I’m sure will draw interest from some of its console gaming fans who’ll probably want to see those aforementioned mascot and other game characters show up as acquirable via unlocking via play or by spending a few additional bucks.
I say get a Yakuza-themed map in there somewhere with the requisite Sonic the Hedgehog characters and stages, maybe add a Halloween-themed House of the Dead stage and a holiday themed NiGHTS into Dreams stage and that will rake in a few bags of gold rings from folks who love those titles. Of course, my suggestions are just those (and free, at that), but I guess if this one takes off, the sky’s the limit. Give this one a go and shake what your momma gave you wherever you like (and make sure to bring a few friends with you or make some new ones at that pop-up disco you’ve created)…
