Fans of the hugely popular RTS genre would do well to seek out The Red Solstice, Ironward Studios’ upcoming co-op focused squad-based action game that that packs in loads of action familiar to shooter fans with the resource management and other elements familiar to RTS players, The game’s recent Kickstarter did more than enough for the game to make its funding goal and a few stretch goals and some hands-on time with an alpha build (that means there’s a ways to go before the final version is complete) reveals quite a thrilling time to be had with one really good looking (in a dark, gritty sci-fi manner) game as you’ll see below the jump…

While the core gameplay is online co-op oriented (once you complete the Prologue), Ironward will indeed be adding a single player element, although it’s not clear yet if this will be playable offline. My ear is to the ground on this part, as I’m more of a solo player who likes toughing it out with some decent AI allies against waves of tough enemies. Sure, it will make for a more challenging experience, but personally, I love figuring things out on my own without other live players to muck up the works or be total jerks that ruin the game in a few ways that strip any fun right out of a session. The team is talking feedback from alpha players and shaping the game into an even finer beast, so a few updates in, those of us lucky to be playing are seeing some nice changes and tweaks to the formula.

Currently, no concrete release date is set in stone, it looks as if Ironward has a winner here with a new game that will have wide appeal among its niche of players and if all they’re thinking of can be done and tweaked to a nice shine, TRS just may be the next great action-based RTS game many go for when they need that fix. More on this one as it develops – stay tuned…
