I do hate lists like this partially because it’s impossible to play every single game one would like to play each year. But hey, let’s call this an experiment in terror minis the terror unless I left off this list a game you like. That’s likely a case where I didn’t get a review code, haven’t bought the game outright because I tend to wait for sales for AAA games I don’t get codes or retail copies for (hey, I’m on a budget these days, folks). Anyway, twenty-one games are better than ten, so here’s that number of titles I tended to gravitate to the most over last year.

Yeah, there were a few more titles I really liked, but I decided to stop here or else risk making this list closer to or perhaps exceeding 50 games. Eh. I’ll note some of those games in the not too distant future because a lot are indies made by smaller teams still pumping out titles, many of which are recommended.

Pretty good list there! I’ve already got two of those games knocked your list. I’ve completed SEGA AGES Phantasy Star (Switch) and Tanglewood (Genesis). But those are likely some of the shorter games on your list. Even Phantasy Star in that new Sega Ages Mode is soooo fast. I had it done in about 4 evenings. The Characters walk faster, less random encounters and tons more XP and money drops. I still had a lot of fun but it does change the Phantasy Star experience.
I would like to try out Dead Cells and Fists of the North Star. But first I might jump into Dragon Quest.
I’m trying to figure out a way to bump Tanglewood up your list! 😛 It’s a short romp at about 4-6 hours but it really does feel epic! I’m eager to hear your thoughts once you’ve completed it. I can clear it now in about 1 hour 20min. Man, I love Tanglewood.

Oh, I did a Tanglewood review here: https://fanboydestroy.com/2018/11/24/capsule-reviews-mega-cats-magicats-and-other-critters-of-note/ – I should have noted that the list wasn’t really a top to bottom ranking, lol. Just games off the top of my head that stood out. Yoko’s Island Express is also worth a try because it mixed in a few styles of gameplay (platform, pinball, puzzle) and is really finely tuned and really fun to play. A nice surprise that would be a bigger deal if it had more familiar mascot characters in it.
