Ghostbusters Turns 30 (!), Makes Me Feel Closer To Being Dead…

Hmmmm… I hope that didn’t sound too grim or anything, but man, I can’t believe Ghostbusters is 30 years old! Yaaaaaaah! Oh well. I saw it when it was originally released a few times (at least 5 or 6) and too many times on cable afterwards, but haven’t seen it an a few years because I got over my adoration of it quite some time ago. In other words, my nostalgia meter isn’t bursting and splatting slime onto the walls and ceilings at this news as it is with some people who saw this trailer and geeked out of their minds about this re-release. Then again, perhaps I’ve become more of a quietly cheerful curmudgeon over time…

I’ve come to realize that a ton of stuff I went bananas for as a kid and teenager no longer interest me at all, so TV “pro” wrestling, many crappy 70’s and 80’s cartoons, a few not so “classic” films some people love as if they’re pets or children (I’ll make a list one day and expect to be flaaaaaaamed to the stars for my choices) and a number books have all fallen off my “Wow, that’s still cool!” wall. And NOPE, I won’t stop you at all from liking ANY of the stuff I don’t anymore. If you’re happy and you know it, clap yer hands and all that stuff like that there…

Now, I’m NOT a total party pooper, people! I still love plenty of old stuff and will continue to scribble about it as much as I can. But if I see you in the street lined up for a film I used to line up for and you’re bouncing around like a suger-addled super tot, expect a rolled up Tiger Beat to the back of the head (gently!) from a fast-moving passerby. Unless you have some jaded kids of your own in line with you when this oldie rolls back into theaters August 29, 2014. A few of those sarcastic little know-it-alls NEED some of that old-school pop culture to show that cheesy can be cool without being intentionally stupid and winky because it’s TOO tied into the social structure set up by corporations to keep you hooked in to more modern (and more easily disposable) entertainment.

Or something like that…

  1. This movie will always be an emotional touchstone for me, because it was the first one I ever saw in a movie theater. Long story, but my parents didn’t allow me to see movies growing up. When a guy asked me on a date to see Ghostbusters, I had a teenage fit, and they let me go on the condition I never asked them to see a movie again.

So, I never asked. I just went to movies from then on. 🙂

I see Bill Murray in Charleston pretty often, but I’ve never had the nerve to go up to him and tell him that story. Somehow, I think it’d make him feel old………

    • Oh, you SHOULD tell him that story! He’s heard so many about that film that I don’t think he’d mind one that’s actually important. That and I don’t think he’d mind at all if you slipped him a copy of your book (maybe autographed?)… I could see him doing a tiny cameo in the movie version 😀
