While it’s got a few pesky typos (and is yet ANOTHER game that’s making me wonder if I should join the fine folks over at RPGMaker.net and ask people to send me their scripts to proofread), spirit_young‘s very cool and often crudely funny RPG, Epic Elf manages to be well worth checking out for a few reasons. His spin on the treasure hunting rogue and his slime minion is a fun one, complete with modern day cursing (hey, it made me laugh) and plenty of increasingly challenging battles. I liked that the game wasn’t a complete walk in the park and some of the dungeons past the first area require your party to be properly leveled, packing some powerful gear and spells in order to take out enemies and much more brutal bosses. You can swap your trusty slime out with another useful minion once you find it, but be sure to level the new one up a bit or it will constantly be dying in combat.
I also like the solid use of the RPGMaker RTP here with character art and sprites that match the tone of the game perfectly. The island map is explorable to a point, but you need to pay attention to monster levels and there are some spots that can’t be accessed until certain dungeons are completed. You’ll want to read every sign and talk to everyone you can, as you’ll find new party members, hidden loot and even more laughs when certain characters run out of things to say. Puzzles in the game aren’t too hard at all, but there are some clever ones that might stump you for a hot minute. Some of the more oddball text (“I like to pee!”) seems like placeholder stuff that would normally be chopped out of a less feisty game before it was completed.
Then again, without some of the more offbeat humor presented here along with the solid level of challenge and overall sense of fun, this would be yet another fairly generic RPGM game that while quite good and well made, would have lacked personality. That said, I’m really hoping there’s a sequel in the works, as the Elf is quite a character worth seeing again at some point. OK, you know the drill by now – get the game at that link above and have a blast.

Downloading as we speak… this should be fun or else I get my money back, right? Wait… the first game was free and made me laugh, so maybe I should give YOU some money. Ah, I think I’m onto something…

Heh- well, at least I know what you’re talking about, so it’s not (that) lame. Some random dude/dudess reading this is going “WTF are Kill Points?” and I’ll tell them (nicely) to shut up and download Epic Elf first, PLAAAAY it, then come back with a question… which I can’t answer because I’m not you. Hmm…(D’oh!) what’s Plan B here?

Plan B would be to consume beer. A lot!

Well, if I do THAT Plan B, I’ll pass out before I play the game and end up dreaming I played it and wondering why I woke up on the bathroom floor with a hangover and not in front of my computer…

Hey! I was going to get to that (eventually) ;^P… But fear not, an actual and more informative blog post on EE2 will go up shortly (as in later when I get home, as I’m actually at the library and it’s about to close)…
