Hawken PAX 2012 Trailer: While My Console Gently Weeps (Slight Return)…

It’s too bad Hawken isn’t blasting its way onto the PS3 or 360, as I could see a lot of gamers wanting to have at it in Adhesive’s and Meteor’s phenomenal-looking (and online only) mech combat game. Of course, I’m not complaining to anyone in particular, just expressing a wish while being a bit cranky about the state of the industry today with all this free to play stuff. From the beginning, this game has looked one that should get everyone who’s worked on it a nice paycheck, I say. Hell, stick a solid single player mode in (maybe with some split-screen play for those who need it), slap it in a case with some nice artwork and I’d definitely pay up at retail or direct from the developer. That’s how I roll – good games take time and effort to make, and people who bust their asses on them should be able to get something in return other than the thanks of those who get to play the end result.

  1. Really? f2p microtransaction models don’t make $?

Consoles are a dying breed, retail box games will be totally dead in the next 5-7 years.

    • You misread the post. I didn’t say free to play games didn’t make money at all. I’m wondering HOW they make money for DEVELOPERS. That and about the sustainability of a flawed business model that’s going to fall apart once people either want their privacy back or there’s a major issue that keeps people away from content they paid for. As the industry hasn’t been clear about ACTUAL sales or how many people stay with the SAME fsp games over a long period, it’s not clear if the numbers we’re seeing tell the whole truth.

Retail isn’t dead and neiter are consoles until you have 100 percent broadband penetration and 100% of people able to get content over it. It’s still not happening in many areas around the world, so there will always be a need for retail games and systems to play them on, as no smart game company will want to lose that much businessas quickly as you free games supporters want them to…
