Ridge Racer Rolls Onto The Vita: A Bit Of A Bumpy, But Budget Ride

Another old standby from the original PlayStation days finally skids onto the Vita, and at first glance, it’s pretty much what you’d expect as a RR fan. However, even with the included DLC, there are only a handful of tracks (six) and cars (ten). Sure, you also get lots of speed and that familiar sideways skidding, but in the end, the lack of a focused single player offline mode plus the odd “leveling” system for cars hurt the game significantly.

Even as an arcade racer (this time aiming for the “connected” gamer), There’s just not enough meat on this one for those raised in the Gran Turismo or Forza eras. The $30 price tag, while inexpensive for a Vita game, still feels like five bucks too much. Granted, if you love nostalgia and aren’t too picky about the lack of innovation, you’ll like what’s here. On the other hand, you’d also hope that Namco would have spent a lot more time adding features and content to make the game a LOT more impressive as a launch window title and not hold back what made the first few Ridge Racer games on the PSOne great in the first place.

Ah well, if the game sells well because of the RR name, there’s always more DLC that can be whipped up, I guess…

  1. From what litle I’ve watched of this Vita luanch it’s feeling a lot like the PSP launch.
Personally I feel the PSP was a real bust. I tried really very hard but I just didn’t enjoy the games enough. Nothing felt engaging or rewarding.
The Vita seems like an awesome piece of hardware but I’m worried that the games just wont stack up. It needs some serious games for serious gamers. I’m tired of causal games and linear RPG’s. I need some real meat, some real content… something that is going to compel me to pick up my Vita (if I had one) other than it’s price tag.
I think there is a good chance that in one year from now my DS Lite will still be a better gaming handheld than the Vita.

    • Well, there are some solid Vita titles out there (Uncharted, Street Fighter X Tekken, WipEout 2048, and a few more) plus other cool ones on the way, but like with the 3DS, you have a portable gaming system that’s using a gimmick (albeit one that’s all too popular) to lure in the casual crowd while also trying to cater to core gamers.

Apple’s successes have pretty much transformed gaming for better or worse (worse, I say) and that’s forced every other company to try and compete when they should be following their own stars and setting their own trends. I think the Vita will survive once Sony realizes concentrating on the core over casual (and fair weather) gamers is KEY, not jumping into the same pissy pool filled with angry bird poop and other junk…
