Bored of Corrections: Oops, Virginia, There IS A Phantasy Star Remake!

Heh. I figured I’d forgotten something important in that Phantasy Star III article, but thanks to The Sega Dude, I’m saved from my mistake. Yes, Phantasy Star and Phantasy Star II were in fact remade for the Japanese PlayStation 2 as part of the Sega Ages 2500 collection. I’d been ignoring most of these, as I’d played some of the 2500 remakes (a few of which were bundled together and released in the US as Sega Classics Collection) and wasn’t too impressed with how many of the games were redone. Still, now I’ll have to track down those two Phantasy Star remakes at some point just to see how they turned out. Although from quickly scanning over a few articles over the past few minutes, losing the first-person view in PS1 for an overhead view is a kick to the shin for me (ouch!). But I never judge anything these days based on a first impression…

  1. Don’t worry about those shins. Sega Ages 2500: Phantasy Star Generation 1 still uses the “3D” first person view for all dungeons. And they don’t look like perfectly symmetrical cinder blocks anymore 🙂 Even though the textures still repeat they have been remade with a lot more detail and several dungeons are very unique from others. Instead of just different colors like in the original in this remake some dungeons will look like caves and others like man made structures.
I’m desperate for these to be translated into English!

I do agree with you; many of the remade games for the Sega Ages 2500 series are not very good at all. However these Phantasy Star games are really excellent.
